What is a reasonable amount of money to hand in at a police station?

£5, £10, £20, £50, over £100?

I don't think I'd bother going to a police station for £20 or less in just cash as I don't think most people would bother to check for that small amount. It gets a bit greyer between this and £50, purely because it would be a faff for me to take it there, but I think maybe the guilt would make me do it. Easy decision over £50.

I suspect mumsnetters will say anything should be handed in, but is anyone prepared to say differently?

Just to add, if it were a large sum I'd phone the police and let them know it was here.

I handed in a wage envelope I found unopened in the street about 40 years ago, a young woman came round and gave me £1 reward (it was a lot for a 10 year old 40 years ago!)

I used to work in a shop and found that our bosses used to "test" staff honesty by leaving the odd £5 round the store when it was dead quiet. I only found out they did this because when I handed in the fourth one in a year they told me to stop and just leave it please. I was shocked.

In the street (where there is much less chance of the owner being found) I'd keep a loose note (max £20) but any amount no matter how small in a bag / wallet I would hand it in. I'd also hand in any amount over £20.

If I were in a shop, right outside a bank or somewhere like that I would hand in any money no matter how small. In somewhere like that it's entirely possible that the owner may realise that they had opened their wallet to pay for their shopping so it must have fallen out there - and return to see if they can claim it.

If I lost a note in the street I'd pretty much write it off as their being no chance of ever finding it but in a shop I'd go back to see if it was still there / had been handed in.

I found £6 in notes outside Keymarkets when I was about 8. In the 70s so in today's money worth about £100. Mum said the lady behind us looked most miffed that I'd picked it up instead of her! Mum made me take it to the police station. It was unclaimed so we went to collect it. Mum said I had to donate so much of it to the police fund - I was a bit Xmas Hmm about that bit! However when the guy in front of us collecting an unclaimed £1 didn't contribute to the fund she let me off too!! Moneybags me - it was worth a fortune in those days!
