mitigating circs:
I have a thumping headache. I could suck it up and force myself to keep going, but I work on the phones, so not nice.
I did work Christmas eve, Christmas day and Boxing day.
Its our 20th anniversary of the day we got together. I just want to lay quietly on the couch, snugged up with dh and a cup of tea, and have a nice chat about everything and nothing.

Work will be fine about it, but I feel guilty as fuck about stretching it
aibu?

Actually if you're not paid and your absence doesn't impact on the service I'd worry about how long it might take employers to decide they can do without you.

Fanfeckintastic · 27/12/2014 22:40

That's definitely not always true Gobshite

Ubik1 · 27/12/2014 22:41

You know that you will only get sanctimony from mumsnetters don't you.

As long as they can be holier-than- thou to someone, they will be happy.

Ubik1 · 27/12/2014 22:43

And headaches and call centre work are the devil especially when your vision is also affected.

Are you talking about yourself there Ubik?

ilovesooty · 27/12/2014 22:48

I think this issue polarises people to be honest. The same people post opinions at either end of the spectrum every time it comes up and they're not going to change their minds.

Ubik1 · 27/12/2014 22:49

Nope

BathshebaDarkstone · 27/12/2014 22:49

YANBU. Working in a call centre with a thumping headache would be torture. Xmas Smile

Fairenuff · 27/12/2014 23:00

Nope

But you are a mumsnetter Ubik and you said that 'you will only get sanctimony from mumsnetters' so what do you mean, if you don't include yourself in that statement?

Surely you didn't mean 'you will only get sanctimony from some mumsneters'?

Xmas Wink

I've been here for 11 years. I'd say that on most threads now, a sort of orthodoxy arises among posters which tends to be more about finding a stick to beat the op with in order to 'win' the debate.

I can't be arsed with that. People used to be a bit more generous.

tethersend · 27/12/2014 23:15

YANBU. You've got to press the 'fuck it' button now and again.

For some reason, sickies go down like shit on toast on MN.

Fairenuff · 27/12/2014 23:17

So, when you said You know that you will only get sanctimony from mumsnetters don't you you didn't mean it? Confused

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 27/12/2014 23:19

Have none of you heard of paracetamol? You take a couple and headaches disappear. It's like magic.

And what ilovesooty said. If you're not missed when you're not there, why are they employing you in the first place? It's not out of the goodness of their hearts, that's for sure.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 27/12/2014 23:23

I wouldn't phone in sick for a headache but I live in an area in which I can catch a bus or get a lift.

People with have a bad headache should not be driving

Ubik1 · 27/12/2014 23:23

Oh god

Yes I am
Sanctimonious and holier than thou

Better now?

Fairenuff · 27/12/2014 23:25

Better for who Ubik?

Probably better if you say what you mean in the first place.

Picturesinthefirelight · 27/12/2014 23:34

If only paracetamol worked that well middle aged.

Bulbasaur · 28/12/2014 01:06

If you're not missed when you're not there, why are they employing you in the first place?

  1. It's a call center. A monkey could do the job. They need high number of people for shifts so that answer time is quicker.
  2. They have a high number employees so if one calls in sick, it doesn't affect the company.
  3. Even if it were a specialized job, don't be naive enough to think that even if you are the most awesome person at your job that you're not easily replaceable. Everyone can be easily replaced in any job. Everyone.

So that argument is silly on all accounts.

CassieBearRawr · 28/12/2014 01:42

I like how fairenuff is beautifully proving ubik's point without realising it Grin

You know you were being unreasonable OP but by the same token I wouldn't give a toss, just don't make it a habit and you'll be reet.

ithoughtofitfirst · 28/12/2014 04:53

Had to check this wasn't pedant's corner for a sec there.

googoodolly · 28/12/2014 05:02

Eh, I have to say YABU because I recently had to cover a colleague who rang in sick on their anniversary. Everyone knew it was his anniversary because he hadn't shut up about it for weeks and it was stinkingly obvious he'd pulled a sickie, but he got away with it because we work with food and he said he'd been throwing up Hmm

If it hadn't been your anniversary, would you have gone in? If not, YANBU, but if you'd have gone in if it was just a regular day, then YABU I'm afraid.

MulledWineMincePie · 28/12/2014 22:30

bulb that's a really fucking horrible thing to say about people who work in call centres.
