We forgot to buy any before Xmas and now a desert I've got planned for today is in dire need of some but no where open yesterday had any. The Italian deli won't be open until jan, I would of hoped even waitrose or John lewis would of stocked them, but no.

WutheringFrights exactly my point, they are not just a posh shop thing, more an Xmas staple for people of taste! There must be somewhere around cornwal that has them.

Pretty here, but sometimes feels like a remote island

I bought some in Waitrose last year but I don't think there's a branch near you.

SantasBassoon · 27/12/2014 08:27

Surely Rick Stein has put his face to marrons glaces? Everything fancier than Rustlers is Stein branded down there.

ilovesooty · 27/12/2014 08:29

"Xmas staple for people of taste" Grin

You should try living in rural Scotland. We read Yotem Ottelenghi recipes as bizarre works of magical realism - so many ingredients that are never seen in real life.

DustInTheWind · 27/12/2014 08:41

It's a Christmas staple and so that's why the people of taste have bought them in good time and the supply is finite. Especially in places that aren't London.
But why are you making a desert? That's very environmentally unfriendly.

OP, you should have said earlier, I have some in the cupboard.

FrigginFuckinFiggyPudding · 27/12/2014 08:50

Ok...so next year we should all send out food parcels to those in desperate need of basic ingredients. Marron glace. Morrello cherries & buckwheat for those further up north than me.

Just for those who appreciate "stable ingredients" and have "Taste" Xmas Grin

ginslinger · 27/12/2014 08:53

This is exactly like what I refer to as the 'great pomegranate molasses famine'. That's when I understood what real suffering was.

SenatusPopulusqueRomanorum · 27/12/2014 08:54

Here in France Lidl has them Grin

Pipbin · 27/12/2014 08:54

I sell them in my farm shop in rural Somerset...so it isn't just Harvey nicks and posh shops!

A Somerset farm shop is even more middle class and posh than Waitrose in my opinion.

figgypuddings · 27/12/2014 08:54

Use conkers but tell everyone not to eat them.
You will thus have an aesthetically pleasing dish plus the bonus of an after dinner game.

My apologies to everyone else for my rant.

wowfudge · 27/12/2014 09:22

Well elephants - I'd say your post is rude and ignorant. No need for that whatsoever.

ElizabethHoover · 27/12/2014 09:23

OttiliaVonBCup · 27/12/2014 09:25

twoopsie · 27/12/2014 09:28

I tried to make my own marron glace with vacuum packed chestnuts and sugar syrup because I couldn't find any here in rural Scotland, it didn't really work, sadly.

austenozzy · 27/12/2014 10:21

I live near Falmouth. Lakeland in Truro could have them. Some of the posher farm shops, eg gear farm might too.
