To think Boxing Day is a lot nicer than Christmas Day?

I had a nice day yesterday, I really did. Everyone was happy with their gifts (including me!) and there were no major disasters, fallouts etc.

But AIBU to think that Boxing Day is actually much better? The pressure is off, there's still plenty of nice food around and you can actually relax without worrying or stressing about whether you have made enough stuffing or if great uncle is going to launch into a racist tirade.

Christmas Day is heaped with expectations and excitement that the reality never quite measures up to. I'm always knackered by six o'clock.

I'm now in my lovely new christmas pjs, drinking vodka and lemonade and eating some christmas chocs whilst watching the racing with DH. Tis bliss. We shall have a mix and match tea and generally pick at things, drink lots and have some quality time together.

It's such a lovely, relaxing day - love the best Sunday analogy JadedAngel - I'm currently watching Casablanca & eating Florentines, DH is pottering & DS is playing with his presents - bliss. We'll eat leftovers for tea, including the trifle that wasn't touched yesterday because we stuffed ourselves with roast potatoes

clary · 26/12/2014 16:34

Yeah we failed to make an impression on the Chr Day choc mousse cake yesterday :)

Casablanca so so brilliant isn't it. "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on here!" "Your winnings, M Renault" Grin

HollyJollyXmas · 26/12/2014 16:37

Absolutely love it.

Last year we (me, Dh and DCs) hired a country cottage for a week at Christmas and just basically had Boxing Day every day for seven days Grin. It was bliss. Food, sofa, telly, ipads/books/papers, kids had the Wii...the odd walk in the fresh air or trip to the village shop for wine/cheese/chocolate. God, it was gooooood.

snozzlemaid · 26/12/2014 16:40

Yes,yes, yes. Boxing Day is such a lovely relaxing relief after a manic Christmas eve preparing and Christmas day cooking and hosting. We've no guests today and Dd has gone to lunch with a friend whose birthday it is today. The rest of us have just lounged and nibbled.
Cooking tea will involve shoving a few oven chips in the oven to have with cold turkey/ham.

See, I think that would be my ideal christmas!

Had a great day. DSs and families all here, harmony and no rush to be doing anything.

YABU - I have had to work today and it was 'orrible. Bah and bloody humbug

sunnyfrostyday · 26/12/2014 17:05

Boxing Day is always busy for us. We travel to visit whatever set of parents we didn't see on Christmas Day, but this year, due to complicated reasons, we are spending four nights away after Christmas at home yesterday.

Lovely to see everyone, but I would like to be curled upon my sofa. Roll on 30th dec.

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/12/2014 17:20

It's the timelessness of the day that I love - nowhere to go, nothing in particular to do. Just sitting, enjoying the moment (surrounded by food and drink!)

3WiseMenOr1WiseWoman · 26/12/2014 17:30

DH and DS at football.
DDog and me on sofa.
Fire lit, nibbles nibbled.

Aahhhhhhhhhhhh.

To me YABVU, Boxing Day is the day where my dd has to see her dad and his partner. She hates going, I have spent the day alone seeing facebook fill up with happy family photos. I hate Boxing Day! dd is now back with me, she has wet herself 4 times in an hour (she is nearly 6) she refused to eat at ex's so is very grouchy but won't move for me to make her food so I now get to make her food whilst she screams the house down. I did try to have a relaxed day but you know what, when your child is elsewhere and your alone it is truly awful.

x2boys · 26/12/2014 17:35

Its my sons birthday today he is.eight so yeah I like boxing day we have just had lamb dinner and birthday cake,!

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/12/2014 18:03

I am sorry to hear that, Miss PP - it is horrible to be having a lonely, sad day knowing that others are having a lovely time.

ClashCityRocker · 26/12/2014 18:39

That's rubbish misspp

I hope she's all snuggles up with you now

Thanks Jaded, sorry about your dd. DS's ears started weeping the day before Christmas Eve, then got worse and worse so we had a trip to the local doctor here (we're away from home). Unfortunately the ear drops don't seem to be doing the job that quickly as he's still got a lot of stuff coming out and his ear is really sore. He has grommets in so it's a bit of a worry- the doctor couldn't see if it was still in the infected ear or not so we'll need follow up appointments.

I'm just really sore, achey and my stomach is feeling really strange.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 27/12/2014 09:40

I would usually agree with you but we were at PILs yesterday, which is normally great, but
DH said something really horrible to me and I'm still cross about it
There was a snail in my trifle!
I fell down a gap in the cattle grid in the dark and twisted my ankle

wobblyweebles · 27/12/2014 13:59

Tbh our Christmas day is v relaxed and boxing day we often go skiing, so both are fab.

Chillibox · 27/12/2014 14:46

As a child I was quite sad about Boxing Day because it was the longest possible time until the next Christmas, but now I quite like it and it's still holiday time only more chilled.

WhatWouldJoanDo · 27/12/2014 20:20

Our day just wasn't like what you have described. The DC were overtired from xmas excitement. They dominated the telly so DH and I were a bit grumpy after hours and hours of the Sofia the First marathon. We were a bit hungover, so couldn't be bothered to do much but were a bit bored anyway.
Then we all went out and they were just grumpy while out. I was really glad when civilisation resumed PM 27th and we had plans to see other people.
