About non-essential shops being open on boxing day

Just that I am sick and tired of christmas being ruined every year by having to work Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. The sales may be all well and good but someone has to give up their day to make it happen! I think if stores are to be open at all on boxing day they should be subject to sunday trading hours of 1-6 only. I'm sure fellow retail workers will agree.. Or maybe I'm just bitter?

OP posts:
meandyouohyeah · 26/12/2014 19:41

I expect people serving me on Christmas Day and boxing to look overjoyed about it. Frankly, if they can't even pretend that then they're in the wrong job

RTFT

I don't go around snarling at guests and spitting in the food, but of course I am unhappy to be there, as are the majority of the staff. But we pride ourselves on our professional service so you would never know that

Don't like the hours? Get another job

Again, RTFT

I am going to ask the fairies for a magical job where I can work whenever I please.

RufusTheReindeer · 26/12/2014 19:43

Dont shop on Boxing Day don't visit shops or pubs or restaurants on Christmas Day so not sure where the "you would have done without" bit came from Smile

I do see your point dastardly but I think it's a bit chicken and egg. what that Field of dreams quote? "Build it and they will come"

Probably have to agree to disagree about that one (in the spirit of the season Smile)

YesIDidMeanToBeSoRudeActually · 26/12/2014 19:45

Dastardly, that's actually one of the worst, if not the worst, post I have seen on Mumsnet. And I have been here a long time and seen a lot of cuntish stuff.

Your comments are absolutely vile and show you for who you really are. Like Expat, I think your post should stand rather than be deleted so people can see who you really are. I'm trying really hard not to get this comment deleted but you should be fucking ashamed of yourself.

You sicken me.

expatinscotland · 26/12/2014 19:46

'As I said in my post, I recognise that I sounded horrifically harsh in what I wrote. It merely sounded odd to me in that you had chosen to leave your daughter at such a time and I was commenting on that. I was not using your child and your situation to further my point expat and I am sorry to have upset you and anyone else who has been offended by that comment.'

We usually sound how we are. I'm sure it sounded odd to you that parents who have been caring non-stop, 24/7 for months should leave that child with her beloved grandparents for a couple of hours, you have no idea, although you continue to comment. By all means, carry on.

DastardlyDachshund · 26/12/2014 19:46

Cross posted with your last comment expat and as I said, I apologise about my comment as it was very poorly worded. I hope that you can find it in yourself to forgive me for my lapse.

Clearly I can be of no further use to this thread so I will leave it now. Once again, my apologies to those I have upset or offended with one badly worded question.

Nightboattocairo · 26/12/2014 19:46

darstadly - I'd quit while you're not ahead if I were you - before you put your size 9s somewhere else inappropriately...

Celticlass2 · 26/12/2014 19:48

I've reported the comment. It's utterly vile.

Lweji · 26/12/2014 19:50

Do you ever go on holiday in the Summer, to those places where people are not allowed a Summer holiday because it's the only time of the year when they get business?

meandyouohyeah · 26/12/2014 19:50

Hmmm I rather think we should all retire from this thread before it gets any more personal. And in the spirit of the season (as rufus said), Merry Christmas.

YesIDidMeanToBeSoRudeActually · 26/12/2014 19:51

Dastardly, I don't think anyone should be forgiving you, some things are just beyond the pale. I think expat has been remarkably restrained in her response.

I can't believe anyone could actually be so crass, insensitive and such a fucking cunt to a bereaved parent. Everyone here can see you for exactly who you are.

Lweji · 26/12/2014 19:54

So, the Summer solstice is all important for you, then?

Surely, it's just a date then, and you can celebrate it any other time of the year.
Just as people can also shop at any other time.

Nightboattocairo · 26/12/2014 19:54

Kudos to you for seeing the error of your ways, mean - best you do step away.....

ouryve · 26/12/2014 19:54

It's just a bank holiday. Boxing day isn't even a thing in many countries.

ouryve · 26/12/2014 19:55

As for Christmas eve, DH always has to work that day and he's a software developer. It's just the day before Christmas.

TheHumancatapult · 26/12/2014 19:58

If you want to shut shops how about bars and restaurants

Ds1 worked 11-5 then 6-10 christmas eve . then christmas day he has done 11-6.30 then today in at 11 and reckon home about 9 maybe

Crap hours but he accepts that part of working in pub/restaurant is pa for the course and is just bloody grateful to have a job .Though he quite like a day of but sadly not to after the new year

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 26/12/2014 19:59

Omg!

Find another job???

Oh yeah cos it's so piss easy to do that!

There was none of this shite when everywhere simply just closed for 2 days. We were better for it.

Would be a real shame if Christmas day were to become 'just another day' like what the other Bank Holidays have become.

meandyouohyeah · 26/12/2014 20:00

night I have no 'error' to see. I was simply trying to act civilly to diffuse the situation. Shame you couldn't bring yourself to do the same.

bananaramadramallama · 26/12/2014 20:01

expat there are 2 utter twats on this thread, who are amazing at spouting yawnsome shite - ignore them.
Flowers for you.

To all those who go out to eat on Xmas day, as I said before - when I used to work in restaurants etc, there used to be plenty of volunteers to work, usually younger people who were too old to want to do the Xmas at home thing, but young enough that they didn't have their own families. We were all quite happy to work and were raking in the cash - usually at least double time plus tips.

Also, a day not worked is a day not paid, so lots of people are glad to work in the shops on boxing day too; and don't forget the nhs staff, police, fire and armed forces - all manned 24/7.

I hope mean isn't using any gas or lecky whilst she's not at work too - fucking selfish, making the folk in the power plants and offshore work on bank holidays and slave for her Wink.

Nightboattocairo · 26/12/2014 20:02

Funny how you suddenly wanted to diffuse the situation. Why was that?

NoImSpartacus · 26/12/2014 20:05

Oh my fucking god. I cannot blv some of the shit it have just read.

Dastardly you should be utterly ashamed of yourself.

And Mean you need to wind your neck in ! As it's Christmas here's a little tip from me to you, don't work in hospitality if you don't like working unsociable hours. It's not rocket science (so even you should be able to grasp it). And stop getting so wound up!

TheFairyCaravan · 26/12/2014 20:10

My dad was a fireman, he worked practically every Christmas of my childhood.

My DH is in the RAF, he has worked Christamses and been abroad for Christmas.

DS1 is a soldier, he will work over Christmas on a few occasions I would imagine, it already looks like he could be away next Christmas. One of his friends has been in the Army for 3 Christmases, he is spending his second consecutive one abroad.

I still don't see why shops that are dragging out the tat that has been in the basement since god knows when has to be open on Boxing Day.

southeastastra · 26/12/2014 20:11

dp has to work nights over the hols just so people can read the fecking daily mail! it's a liberty i tell you Grin

expatinscotland · 26/12/2014 20:14

OMG, south, now that is bad!

Lweji · 26/12/2014 20:15

South, that is dastardly indeed.

Lweji · 26/12/2014 20:16

I also don't see why some shops have to open on Boxing day, but I don't see that it's such a huge problem either.
