I've heard this used on radio 4 a couple of times recently, can't help but role my eyes every time.

At this rate we'll be. Able go fit the entire English Dictionary on a sheet of A4

Just refuse to play the game. Fat, overweight, obese, whatever. Describe accurately, and stop bowing to this ridiculous restriction on what we can and cannot say.

Who is deciding this anyway?

It makes me very angry

BeHoHoHove · 25/12/2014 23:46

I think that term is sizeist agains people who weigh something

McSqueezy · 25/12/2014 23:49

"people of mass" made me laugh.

WetAugust · 25/12/2014 23:50

And while I'm at it. - use it or lose it.

English is a rich and descriptive language. This is my language to use as I see fit. I will not be dictated to by a ridiculous belief that we have go through life wondering who Nd what we will offend next.

this is all designed to keep you anxious and when you're anxious you are frightened of doing the wrong thing and therefore become controllable. Social manipulation at its worse.

Probably dreamt up by some ft bustard.

ffs

Bambambini · 26/12/2014 02:45

Never heard of it - did you just make it up?

BigCatFace · 26/12/2014 03:15

I've heard it, it's stupid. I'm fat, it's not a dirty word. I refer to myself as fat and assume I'm insulting myself- I'm not, I'm describing myself. I like this video on fat by Joy Nash-

elephantspoo · 26/12/2014 17:04

Rotund.
When you get bigger than rotund, you become a rotunda.

twoopsie · 27/12/2014 06:47

No I did not make it up, radio 4 as I said

I first came across it years ago in a Ben Elton novel (Blind Faith, published in 2007), where an obnoxious woman constantly refers to herself as a 'proud woman of size'. It's meant to be a pisstake.

Are you sure it wasn't just an arts programme you were listening to, OP?

Rowgtfc72 · 27/12/2014 18:17

I'm fat, technically obese, but definitely fat. I'm also lazy and greedy. Yes, I ate all the pies. Person of size is just ridiculousXmas Grin

TrendStopper · 27/12/2014 21:42

It is ridiculous. It is like 'person of colour'. It makes things more complicated. A 'person of size' could be skinny or fat just like a 'person of colour' could be white or black.

Sn00p4d · 27/12/2014 23:22

Will be really helpful if reporting a crime, can you describe the person?
It was a person of size, colour and gender.
I think I know who you mean!

Suzannewithaplan · 27/12/2014 23:33

we use similar phrases for other attributes, eg, a woman of stature, a man of learning, isnt it just a slightly grand way of saying something?

NatalieHarding21 · 27/12/2014 23:40

Weight related concerns are very sensitive and although many shrug off the issue to avoid having to face the matter there are those who sadly allow the weight issue to overcome their life and threaten themselves with isolation which can cause the matter to spiral out of control. We really need to use a yardstick and understand what is overweight not by BMI standards but by a societies view at large of the types of overweight persons. this matter is here to stay and must be addressed comprehensively.
