Just got back from a shit lunch meeting a friend. Takes 15 mins to walk there and only have a hour lunch break that I have to be back by. She was late so I just had a juice and raced back to the office. Spent maybe 10 mins with her.

She doesnt understand that I can't just take a super long lunch, that I can't do felxi time and have to be in work 5 days a week. Was also saying she couldn't see why I'm working Xmas eve and nye, when I have to as only get 20 days. Shes found it strange that I do any overtime without getting paid, when its just something you have to do, I don't love it either. Then she doesn't understand that I have to keep my performance up as if it slips, I'm out with 150 quid per year worked. No five / six figure payout!

I know some public sector jobs are run more like this these days, but not hers in the local town hall.

Sorry just having a rant, sleep deprived and sometimes feel like she's rubbing it in my face.

Your life sounds almost unbelievable twoopsie - wealthy parents (with a Ferrari apparently) who are not planning to leave you anything in their wills, a job as an interior designer, several flats in London that you own and presumably give you a large rental income, you're high up in a company that pays minimum redundancy, gives you the minimum number of holidays and the time to MN - and yet you're bemoaning the fact that your friend in the public sector (who presumably earns far less than you do) gets 'long' lunches? hmm

Well your a bit off on some of that, but what is unbelievable?

The point is I'm complaining about my friends lack of understanding that I can't take long lunches at the drop of a hat, not that she can. Very different.

What bits am I a bit off on?

ilovesooty · 25/12/2014 11:01

No you're hoping that her work conditions worsen because you're envious of them.

Floisme · 25/12/2014 11:17

Well op I can only take my hat off to you. You have a full-time, high level job with overtime and 20 days holiday a year plus you're running your own business and bringing up a family. Just thinking about your life makes me want to go and lie down.

But if your job allows you the time and/or the resources to do all these things then the working conditions cannot be that bad, surely?

SirChenjin · 25/12/2014 11:20

Don't forget the multiple London properties that the OP owns.

Ho hum. YABU, of course, if only because pretty much everything you post is weirdly goady, and you have a strange obsession that everyone in your life has something you want, and instead of trying to improve your own lot you just want to drag everyone else down to your level.

On the bright side, you seem to have a very rich interior life, a lot of time on your hands to post goady shit since the schools have broken up, and your employer, however shit they may be, appears happy to employ the semi-literate in a very senior post. So that's all good. Peace and joy.

No. What people find hard to take is this is the second, me, me, me, post in a row where you tell people how fucking rich and well to do you are, and how your friends and parents won't bend over and kiss your ass.

LuluJakey1 · 26/12/2014 17:57

Well said Tartina and Elephantspoo! The OP is a giant PITA. Can't be bothered with her- it's all pretend stealth-boasting masquerading as 'Poor me' when in fact what comes across is quite a nasty, sneering, grabby, entitled attitude. Someone with not very well-hidden shallows and no grace or style.

Off to make a cup if tea.

SirChenjin · 26/12/2014 18:03

I don't believe a word of it - parents with a Ferrari, a career in interior design, multiple rental properties in London (furnished from Ikea) and a senior role in a company despite not being able to construct a sentence. Yeah, right Grin

I smell BS.

EBearhug · 26/12/2014 19:02

I've worked in public and private sector doing exactly the same role (IT support) - I wouldn't go back to public sector in that role unless I were desperate, because in the private sector, I can earn between about 50% and 100% more than I did in the public sector.

You can't make generalisations about public vs private sector, though, because it's meaningless. Private sector includes multinationals with thousands of employees round the world, as well as small family concerns with just one or two employees, as well as everything in between. Do you mean roles which are low-skilled and don't require particular qualifications, or are you talking about highly skilled jobs, requiring post-graduate level qualifications? Even if you restrict it to just "town-hall" jobs, there will be those doing general office admin, and those who are qualified accountants and all sorts. People in different departments and on different grades will probably have different levels of flexibility in their roles.

The issue is nothing to do with different jobs, but to do with people who are incapable of recognising that not all jobs do or can have the same sort of working conditions, be it public or private sector. Even if I worked with exactly the same conditions as someone else, I would be annoyed with someone who didn't turn up for a lunch meeting (or any other meeting) - yes, I usually do have the flexibility to take a longer lunch, but I might not have on a particular day - I often have meetings straight after lunch when the USA comes on line. Having general flexibility doesn't mean you can screw up everyone else's schedules and be inconsiderate of their time - it doesn't matter what working conditions they have.

SolomanDaisy · 26/12/2014 21:59

That's interia design actually, Sir Chenjin. Not sure what the lunch breaks are like in the interia world.

SirChenjin · 26/12/2014 22:49

Of course, how could I forget?! Yes, interia design - which is closely aligned to interior design, only cheaper.

twoopsie · 27/12/2014 06:46

Ha I'm boasting even though it is other people bringing up aspects of my life from other threads? Despite them not all being true

SirChenjin · 27/12/2014 10:20

Bringing up your unbelievable posts from other threads is not vicarious boasting, believe me
