I find it hard to approve of many pop stars and their behaviour and or lyrics.

But avril seems pretty safe, no naughty lyrics, not falling out of night clubs, not getting into arguments, not showing all her flesh, not talking about sex all the time.

Just fun and wacky with a faux rebble attitude. Aibu to think she's safe to buy for pre teens?

Avril has a sex tape? Shock

FloozeyLoozey · 21/12/2014 19:25

She always annoyed me when she pretended to be a punk. She is not a punk.

headdesk · 21/12/2014 19:26

I can't stand her but mainly because she claimed to be the most punk artist out there which did make me laugh. Then she covered System Of a Down and butchered it.

BlairWaldorfHeadBand · 21/12/2014 19:31

alis she does and it is by far the most hardcore out of all the celeb sex tapes.
However that's nothing to do with her music, she's an adult and can film herself if she likes. Frankly I see no reason why any singer or actress etc should be pressured into being a role model, no one is responsible for another persons behaviour

OddBoots · 21/12/2014 19:35

Not quite the same style but my pre-teen dd likes Lorde and (since she was on Dr Who) Foxes - both of them seem okay as far as role models go but then who knows how things will go, just look at Miley Cyrus.

twoopsie · 21/12/2014 19:35

I've just googled and the sex tapes look fake to me, just a lookalike not her. She's been in pop since she was a teenager so doubt she would do that.

You are probably getting her confused with Kim k

Isn't she like totes 2000 and late?

depecheNO · 21/12/2014 21:07

Seconding Lorde. I don't personally "get" her music, but she seems like a lovely, down to earth person. Also seconding that we cannot force celebs to be role models. Better to pick someone current who happens to match your ideals while you're still the one choosing for your kids - although, as has been said, you can't know what they will get up to in the future. I think what the kids actually see is more important than whether or not they have been involved in scandals. There's plenty of time to lose all respect for these people as a teenager. ;)

Fairylea · 21/12/2014 21:13

Hmm. Well dd aged 12 wouldn't know who she is I don't think. ...! It's all 5 seconds of summer and Ed sheeran here both of which I think are pretty tame ish save for the odd rude swear word.

I was into some truly awful shocking music as a teen - really heavy metal over sexualised stuff. God knows how my mum coped. I do remember her telling me to turn it down A LOT. I think I've turned out okay... mostly anyway. I'm not sure how much music influences teens anyhow if the rest of their influences are good and adults are interested in talking with them about stuff to debate ideas etc.

I think possibly the you tube blog has overtaken music in terms of popularity for young teens. Dd and her friends are absolutely obsessed with Zoella and alfie and I have no idea who half of them are. They all watch the blogs non stop!!

ChickenMe · 21/12/2014 23:26

I like Katy B and agree about Foxes.
I didn't know Avril L was still going but at least she doesnt do the porno thing afaik.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/12/2014 23:37

She's not such a great role model in my opinion. She's only 30 and already on her second marriage with the rumours that that's also on the rocks.

I know we can all make poor choices in our love lives but really, why the rush into these things at such a young age?

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/12/2014 00:04

I don't see why celebrities, particularly young female ones, have to role models. Or why they owe people that. They're singers/models/actresses, your children are not their problem.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 22/12/2014 00:21

Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?

Grin

On a more serious note,is she really still going?

CassieBearRawr · 22/12/2014 01:26

Another vote for Lorde. She is aces.

Although I'm not one to talk about pop music. I bloody love K-Pop which is the weirdest, fakest, most overly manager-controlled industry I've ever seen.

You're not going to find many pop singers without some kind of baggage you don't like/approve of. But then, isn't that the point for kids Grin

Birdsgottafly · 22/12/2014 01:36

"Girlfriend" was about bullying another girl, she actually physically assaulted her in the music video, so she could get with her boyfriend.

Her friends were roped in and the bullying was sustained.

That put me off her, tbh.

I'm not fussed on some of her other lyrics around relationships, either.

NormaStits · 22/12/2014 02:35

Agree with Birds about Girlfriend, thought that was in poor taste.

I think Pink is a good role model, I like her values, but probably also a bit passe for tweens now.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/12/2014 02:46

Well Avril is Canadian so she's got to be at least a little bit alright. Smile

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/12/2014 02:47

I love Pink.

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 22/12/2014 03:15

DD (15) quite likes Avril but I doubt the pre teen age would have heard of her as she is a bit 2004.

twoopsie · 22/12/2014 08:46

I think in girlfriend, she was the girlfriend so it wasn't really bullying
