to hate noisy eaters?

Just that really. DH is happily munching through a bag of Doritos and it's making me stabby.

It's not even the initial crunch. I accept that crisps are crunchy. It's the subsequent mushy chews that drive me insane.

What's the Mumsnettiquete in relation to noisy eaters?

You are not alone 8 your suffering. My mum seems to deliberately cram her mouth full of food before she says a word at the table. Hate it hate it hate it.

I have misophonia - my husband gulping drinks makes me so stressed I have to stick my fingers in my ears every tie he lifts a cup. I find public transport massively stressful as someone is always sniffing or slurping.

I feel your pain and can only suggest separate houses as a solution (only half joking!)

icclemunchy · 21/12/2014 02:50

I'm sure I have this, not just people eating but sniffing/clicking/tapping all sorts.

The worst bit is I'm 32 weeks pregnant and seem to have developed a weird heavy breathing when in bed. It makes me stabby at myself!! Confused

bloodyteenagers · 21/12/2014 03:14

Woman I work with is the worst. I got to the point of wanting to rip her head off and shove it up her arse. Used to fantasise quiet a lot about it. Think it must have been apparent, we are no longer on the same lunch.

Her manners were vile. Lips smacking with every bite. Lots of sniffly inhaling when eating. Talking with her mouth full so not only did you have the pleasure of seeing everything as she chomped away, you would often wear it. Any comments about any of it were met with laughs and us told to basically deal with it.

I hear you sister. I have my two eldest kids home for Christmas. One of them is a noisy, sloppy, lip smacky eater and I honestly don't know how he's still breathing, and the other one is not sloppy/lip smacky but he chews in a slightly manic, intense way, like he's on speed. And the first one can't handle cutlery properly. He's right handed but his whole life he's eaten in a left handed stylee. Which would be fine, except that because he's right handed he holds the food still with his knife and drags it apart with his fork.

As I said before, I really don't know how he's still breathing.

Good table manners are very important to me and I don't understand how it came to this. Sad They are quite civilised in all other respects.

Being able to hear the food INSIDE SOMEONE'S MOUTH makes me want to commit murder.

DP is a noisy eater and gets massively offended when I point it out.

For those of you who are like us (do we 'suffer' from Misophonia?!) what's been the reaction of those around you?

HaloItsMeFell · 21/12/2014 04:38

me too rainy. I have started to notice this with my mother as she's got older. I think it's because her teeth are all a bit looser these days Grin but it really bothers me. It's starting to be a big problem for me, eating around people. I can't stop focussing on it. It has actually put me off eating my food a few times and I've had to leave the table. I cannot point it out to my own kids anymore, or WWIII starts at the table with DH saying I'm picking on everyone.

HaloItsMeFell · 21/12/2014 04:41

Just want to add though, I don't point out perfectly reasonable levels of noise when chewing etc, just the obviously bad mannered things like chewing with mouth open, bolting food, sloppiness, lip smacking etc. so I know I AM NOT BEING UNREASONABLE!!!

rainyevening · 21/12/2014 04:42

That's the thing, the other people feel criticised and you're left going, 'but how can you not KNOW?!'

HaloItsMeFell · 21/12/2014 04:43

do you want to come and live with me rainy and I'll send my lot to your DH? Grin

AnotherGirlsParadise · 21/12/2014 05:21

My gorgeous, wonderful, completely amazing DP drives me ABSOLUTELY FUCKING MENTAL when he eats his Shreddies in the morning. He's mostly fine during consumption, it's afterwards - the horrible teeth picking and pushing his tongue around his gums and the noise and the OH MY FUCKING GOD GO AND BRUSH YOUR FUCKING TEETH BEFORE I STAB YOU. The other day he actually started doing it halfway through his bowl of cereal, and I had to leave the room before I headbutted him.

Also: teeth grinding at night. He alternates between sounding like a dry cork twisting in the neck of a wine bottle, and a vagina trying to clap. I've come THIS close to smothering the fucker.

And yes, I'm in the misophonia camp.

snowmummy · 21/12/2014 07:34

Totally sympathise. My son hates it too and gets really annoyed. Don't know how to help him!

AlwaysLurking38 · 21/12/2014 08:10

This makes me want to physically attack people. My dad is a noisy eater and I have to leave the room it makes me that angry.

My step dad and sister are noisy drinks. Think gulping and obviously swallowing air. Just thinking about it now and I could ram the cup down their throats.

I think what makes it worse is their completely unaware but once they'vedone it iI'm one edge waiting for the next shitty annoying noise.

Should be electrocuted every time they do it

LapsedTwentysomething · 21/12/2014 08:28

My FIL is the most disgusting eater and drinker. He slurps his tea and does the 'ahhh' thing. Regardless of what he's eating, he will slap his chops . He always starts eating as soon as his food is in front of him rather than waiting for everyone else. And ... he licks the plate!!

Bartlebee · 21/12/2014 08:39

There's a woman in my office who I swear waits until her mouth is full of food before she speaks. It's absolutely disgusting.

We all had a blissful couple of months when she was doing Lighter Life, sadly she's lost all the weight and is back to her pig at at trough style of eating.

I have misophonia with bells on.
