Excuse me *please*

AIBU to find it rude when people just say "excuse me" without adding a "please" on the end? I am hearing it so much now, and I just find it rude.

Depends. for example, if someone is managing to take up the whole lane in the supermarket with trolley then I think that is rude and inconsiderate by itself. A polite excuse me is about all I can manage.

However, suppose it's all about intonation isn't it
Merry fucking Christmas Xmas Wink

I'd love an "excuse me". Yesterday I was leaning into the chiller to grab a sandwich out and a woman just pushed me with her trolly to get past Shock Shock

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 20/12/2014 15:59

Being bummed by a trolly in Waitrose is not what one expects.

CakeAndWineAreAFoodGroup · 20/12/2014 16:02

I've always said excuse me please and thank you afterwards.
On odd occasions if I have to repeat myself I add ^sorry, can I get by, please"

Then I will push by. Tough. They were asked twice and ignored me.

Mousefinkle · 20/12/2014 16:03

Adding please sounds really pushy and rude IMO. Excuse me is polite in itself, please is completely unnecessary.

Saying budge or move or SCUSE is rude. Excuse me is perfectly fine and then thank you afterwards.

HappyYoni · 20/12/2014 16:09

I always say sorry after excuse me. Probably a bit unnecessary but is habit now.

Damnautocorrect · 20/12/2014 16:19

Didn't know you needed to add please, I thought 'excuse me' was sufficient. Although in fairness I'm only generally saying it because someone's stopped in a stupid place

ifgrandmahadawilly · 20/12/2014 16:38

'Excuse me' and a 'thank you' afterwards is perfectly polite. I think 'excuse me, please' can make you sound passive agressive.

It's all in the tone really though.

LL12 · 20/12/2014 16:41

I have only ever added the please at the end, although I do sometimes wonder why I bother as 9/10 I get ignored anyway.

LL12 · 20/12/2014 16:43

Not sure how saying the word "please" can ever be rude or pushy, isn't it just simple manners?

pinkpeoniesplease · 20/12/2014 16:46

YABU.

Excuse me is polite in itself, dependant on tone etc

Fuckmath · 20/12/2014 16:54

Excuse me is sufficient

Inertia · 20/12/2014 16:56

Fuzzy the woman was lucky you didn't throw up over her!

ChickenMe · 20/12/2014 17:02

I thought excuse me,said in a polite tone, with a low key "thanks" afterwards would be fine?
If you compare English to say Spanish, it's interesting as they have polite forms of the verb and of address and we don't which is why we have to over-egg everything eg "would you mind awfully passing me the water please". Also sir/madam is normal there but patronising here.
My OH thinks the Spanish are rude; I think they are economical! I lived in Catalunya for a bit so I "get" them. They just about say excuse me (it'll be half of the word) but most of the time they just push! Lol.

Lurkingintheshadows · 20/12/2014 18:38

If it is dependant on tone, why does adding 'please' make it sound more rude?

Don't you end most requests with a 'please' for politeness?

I can't see how 'please' would turn something into sounding rude?

Saying 'excuse me' behind someone sounds abrupt. Especially in a situation where it is crowded and the person in your way is not necessarily at fault.

YABU.

'Excuse me' is perfectly polite enough. Braving the shops today with all the slow moving hordes I had to use it more than once today. What I really wanted to say was 'why the hell are you standing still in the middle of the pavement on one of the busiest days of the year. Move or you won't live to see Christmas Day'.

'Excuse me please' sounds a bit more impatient I think.

lemoncurd20 · 20/12/2014 18:52

Excuse me is polite, I might say please also but I certainly wouldn't think it rude not to.

Yes, I'd say thank you when they moved, I always thought I was pretty polite.
