AIBU to think the 'job' sounds like a scam?

My friend 'Lauren' has been a SAHM for over 10 years. she recent decided to go back to work part time but has really struggle to find anything with being unemployed for over a decade.

A few weeks ago she applied for an online sales job on the job centre website, the employer contacted her a week later and offered her a telephone interview.
The man she spoke to told her that he was the MD of a small electrical repair company and a year ago expanded his company to include buying and selling secondhand gadgets.
He now has a small team of people who he works with, basically they buy broken smart phones, laptops and tablets, fix them and then sell them.
The company has been doing well and they want to expand to online selling, and this is what he was advertising for.
He is looking for someone to make adverts and sell the reconditioned gadgets on eBay.
He said he would pay £50 for every item sold and 10% of the final value to her.

It all sounded great, until she mentioned these parts.
He said he wanted to trial it first so wanted someone willing to use their own eBay account for the first few sales as he didn't want to go to the haste of setting up a selling account if it wasn't going to be successful.
He also said that he would take photos and send them to Lauren, she would do the listing, sell the item, take the payment, forward it to him and then he would post the item and send her the tracking details to give to the buyer.

As soon as she told me she wouldn't be handling the items I thought it sounded dodgy, but when she said that the guy wants her to take the money and send it into him I was convinced it was a scam but she said the MD assured her that it was all above board and that she would have the tracking details to prove the item had been sent.

I would like the ever honest opinions of MN please, what do you think of this job?

I will be showing Lauren this thread to convince her this is a scam

Tell your friend that scammers often do 'seem really nice'. That bit is essential to their business model - they have to seem charming and trustworthy, otherwise no one would fall for it.

When on JSA years ago I was put forward for a job that was advertised, when I went for the 'interview' the job didn't exist (and never had - the post they wanted filled was totally different and was very dodgy) and I was left in a difficult situation. Yes they sanctioned me for not taking 'the job'.

When I appealed they told me they do not accept any responsibility for adverts placed in the job centre. In the above case the 'job' was breaking the law, the 'company' had changed the details just for the jobcentre in case they checked. Yes I won my appeal and the company stopped trading and then started again under another name but honestly the jobcentre should check all jobs advertised via them (in those days it was cards not website but the same thing applies).

I feel for your friend. I've been there and it's a horrible situation to be in, but honestly I was Hmm before you even got to the 'it all sounded great' part of your OP - that's due to experience though. There are a huge amount of scams out there targeting people desperate to work and it makes me Angry

Avoid, avoid & thrice avoid!

JennyBlueWren · 19/12/2014 15:45

I remember a few years back there were brothels/"massage parlours" advertising on the Job Centre website so I wouldn't trust it because it's on there.
When I was job hunting I found the Job Centre to be the worst place to look!

Becca19962014 · 19/12/2014 15:50

Id forgotten that Jenny. I agree it's the worst place to look. In the end I sent CVs to local companies.

MothershipG · 19/12/2014 16:15

It was on the Radio 4 money program, exactly this scam, please tell your friend to report it!

MothershipG · 19/12/2014 16:19

And here's a Channel 4 News link all about it!

Make your friend look at that if she still doesn't believe you!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/12/2014 16:22

Also, it is believed that a third of the jobs are dodgy....

MothershipG · 19/12/2014 16:22

And I've just noticed that piece is dated June 2011!!! So this scam has been going on for years.

Thank you for those articles.
Lauren is coming around for a Wine in an hour so I look forward to showing her this thread and definitely those articles.

Don't let her feel bad about it, it's something people learn by experience, sometimes they are lucky enough to walk away before starting (like me) but other times they can end up in serious trouble. Lauren has had a lucky escape!!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/12/2014 19:57

I think this man had a very good story and explained away any inconsistencies very well

That's just the point - they always do Hmm

He'll almost certainly have form for this, so do get her to tell the Jobcentre what happened. If they're as bad as they were when I used to recruit they probably won't do much, but the more people report this kind of thing, the more chance there is of them finally taking action

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 19/12/2014 19:59

Definitely a scam.

If she wants to get experience, try volunteering, in charity shops or whatever, it helps.

WeAreEternal · 20/12/2014 11:32

Thanks again for the advice everyone.

Lauren read the thread and is now convinced that it is a scam and is not going to have any further contact with the man she spoke to.
I also advised her to report the job advert.

I think Lauren has made a very wise decision. i hope she finds a real job soon

maddening · 21/12/2014 00:11

Scam - anything where funds are going through your personal account is dodgy - she could be effectively money laundering and comes with a prison sentence.
