There is a rat in my green bin WIBU never to use it again?

Went to put a bag in it's only a third full and there was a great big rat in there. Was about to drop bag in and did so anyway before slamming the lid and running away. What do I do next? Not use it till next bin day or stick a brick on top to stop it escaping? Throw in some mouse/ rat poison?

A single rat is not a reason to call pest control. Either let it out or put something poisoned in for it to eat.

Wtf is wrong with all of you?

anonymice · 16/12/2014 15:51

Let the rat out. I don't suppose it likes being stuck in a rank wheelie bin. Turn the bin on its side and wait till it gets out. Job done.

Oakmaiden · 16/12/2014 15:53

A single rat is not a reason to call pest control.

Of course it is. Because there won't be just the one rat she saw, there will be others too. I would certainly call the council for advice, op.

LTB??

Call 101??

Sorry OP Grin

Once there was a rat sitting outside my front door when I got back from picking the DC up from school Shock.

Fortunately it was sitting on the hinges side, so we were able to open the door and tumble inside without risking it coming into the house too - though I was a bit scared that I would inadvertently "corner" it by opening the door and then it would spring and attack my throat .

We cowered indoors for the rest of the afternoon, and fortunately it had gone by the time DH got home, or I would have been confined to the house indefinitely.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 16/12/2014 16:51

We once went out for about 40 minutes mid-afternoon and, when we came back, there was a dead rat in the middle of the front path with a chunk bitten out of it.

Oakmaiden · 16/12/2014 16:53

You see, I am now aiming to myself.

"There's a rat in the dustbin what am I gonna do, there's a rat in the dustbin..."

Oakmaiden · 16/12/2014 16:53

Singing. Not aiming. Stupid phone.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 16/12/2014 16:59

According to Rat Law, the bin is now his. So back off. Grin

Don't hurt Ratty. I'm sure he'll get out himself.

I once saw a dead frog on the doormat through the glass in the door. It was sooooo gross. Makes me shudder thinking about it. Had to warn DP so he didn't stand on it and track it through the house. Vom.

Meow75 · 16/12/2014 17:03

When is bin day? Just leave it and it'll go into the bin lorry. Problem solved.

Mulderandskully · 16/12/2014 18:40

It might not be part of a pest attack. OP said she lives rurally so
It might just be, well nature. Just a one off who wants to go back to the forest or wherever he usually lives.

Boysclothes · 16/12/2014 18:45

This is why cats are so so brilliant. Had a spate of the cats dragging rats in over the summer but they obviously got them all and we haven't had any for ahes. It's lovely feeling that if any little critter got in here it would be a small pile of spleen and intestine the next morning....

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 16/12/2014 18:50

(Whispers v quietly) It's only a rat. Open the lid, walk away and worry not.

greenbananas · 16/12/2014 19:05

I would call my young sons over, show them the cute rat, calmly explain all the yuckiness and environmental issues, and then let the rat out.

But if I saw earwigs, I would run away screaming and never touch the bin again.

Pixel · 16/12/2014 20:07

Such a lot of fuss over one rat, if you'd left the lid open for a while instead of slamming it shut the rat would be long gone by now, why did you want to stop it escaping?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/12/2014 20:10

Put bin on side. Leave bin overnight. It's a rat not a sabre toothed tiger :)

Hassled · 16/12/2014 20:13

I'd go on Rightmove faster than a speeding bullet. I'm not squeamish about blood and guts, I don't flinch at spiders, I can clean up vomit with aplomb - but show me a rat and I'm reduced to a pathetic mess. I blame James Herbert.

Comito · 16/12/2014 20:23

We had rats in our garden this year. Our council no longer does pest control so we had to poison them. Never found one in the bin though, if I did I'd probably just take it out into the road and tip it over. Job done.

whothehellknows · 16/12/2014 21:34

Yep, we also had rats in the garden this summer. And not just a couple-- dozens! They came from a commercial property nearby, so in this case the council had to get involved as a nuisance neighbor issue. The kids loved it, they spent ages watching them through the window. (ewwww!)

Janethegirl · 16/12/2014 22:06

Fill bin with water....put a hose into bin, turn on tap, let water flow until rat is either drowned or washed overboard Grin.
I absolutely hate rats.

Doobigetta · 16/12/2014 22:12

Nuke it from space, it's the only way to be sure.

I didn't mean to slam the lid and run away. That just sort of happened, mainly because I'm a scaredy cat and for some reason pictured it leaping at my face. 1984 anyone? I don't leave binbags outside they go directly into green bin from kitchen but I have did someone in to repoint a chimney and he was using the bin for his rubbish so maybe he let it in. It'd mean it'd been in there for three days though. Bugger of it is the next collection is due on christmas day so no idea when I can fob my problem off on the bin men. I don't really want to throw in some poison in case it escapes afterwards and gets eaten by the cats. What if I leave the bin lid open and loads of them go in. Surrounded by fields so there's a fair few of the hungry feckers out there.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 17/12/2014 09:17

Either let it out or knock it on the head quickly.

But preferably let it out. Poor old ratty. He's just trying to go about his daily life....
