No basin in the only loo?

Am I being unreasonable to think this can't be okay in 2014?
We have an option of a 'swap' (social housing) anyway... There is just one loo, one loo minus a Basin! The bathroom is upstairs. It is a council property built in 1958. Is it legal Anymore? Should the council put one in? I am also prepared to sort this out ourselves but... I think it strange they haven't updated? It isn't a deal breaker, but l think it us seriously unhygienic. Isn't it? Thank you all.

SO the current inhabitant is alive and well enough to converse with you, she hasn't died/been hospitalised or is too unwell to get off the loo because of salmonella, e-coli or whatever? I think you will survive - however you should investigate the legal requirements for a leased property and takle the council if they are shirking their responsibilities. Shelter will probably be able to advise if you don't have a CAB local to you.

I think the fact it is on different floor is worse.
But our house is separate loo to bath/sink. Its private and we bought it 10yrs ago. Most homes on this estate are like this ex- council.
Its fine no extra d&v and really that is so contagious anyway.
What i would not allow is washing hands in kitchen sink. Im convinced that would make you sick.
It always splashes-> over drying rack any pans soaking ergh!!
I dont let people cone in from garden and wash hands in there - especially with all cat crap everywhere.

Separate does have advantages can have bath in peace/shower.
I mean the door handle isnt an issue though as you go in shut door get hands dirty possibly, open door, dirty handle you wash hands , handle stays dirty. But provided you ALWAYS wash after using it doesnt matter how dirty handle is.

On no ive forgotten about men who would then get germs on themselves and i guess inserting tampons.

I think you have more to fear of kids picking things up at school. Or public toilets.

I honestly wouldn't have had a problem (so much) if the toilet and bathroom were on the same floor. I went to the property today, the flight of stairs to the bathroom isn't that far. I will train my youngest children to go upstairs straight away... I will attempt to train my 16 year old... ;) I will save up and get on put in the toilet for the future, as try as l might, it. Just. Seems. Odd. :)

I think it will be antibacterial wipes first. Then up the stairs. I agree that l don't want toilet hands in my kitchen!

We have a separate bathroom and toilet room, right next door to each other.

We have survived so far. You only touch the handle on the inside of the loo room to open it to go and then immediately wash your hands (bathroom door always open when not in use). It's no worse than having to open a cubicle door to then wash your hands.

When the DC were little, I used to wish we could knock through and have a huge bathroom.

Now they are older it's a godsend as one can be in the toilet and another can be showering in the bathroom. Much easier than waiting for the one bathroom to be free for all uses.

Yes. I do see the merits of separation. I would prefer them next to each other, failing that... At least one the same floor! :)

I know someone who had one loo and one bathroom and the loo didn't have a basin. She was told because she had to walk through the house (importantly, past the kitchen) to her from the loo to the bathroom that it was against some regulation (sorry so vague I really have no idea) and her Housing Association insisted on fitting a basin. So yes, there should be one and I bet they'll fit one no questions if you ask.

ZOmbie, but Just wondered what the outcome of this was?

Realise it's a couple of years ago. I was surprised by how many people seemed to miss the point that the key concern wasn't that the loo and basin were in different rooms, but on different floors. The owner wouldn't just have to go next door to access a hand basin, but up a whole flight of stairs. Personally I can't believe that meets regulations for houses rented socially.
OP did you move in. N what happened.
