To not put cups/mugs/glasses upside down in cupboard?

My MIL and many people I know do this...I think it goes back to days when mice were rampant. But why would they still do it? To me it makes the mug or glass musty and smelly. My MIL insists on turning all mine upside down when she visits. Not a major issue but just wondering if it is only me ;)

Ah, like the need for talcum powder and the constant fear of damp and draughts.

YABNU. I think they smell a bit musty when stored upside down, too.

LarrytheCucumber · 14/12/2014 14:24

My DMiL always put them upside down and called it the 'right' way up, as did her best friend. They had been at school together and I assumed it was what they had been taught in Home Ec, presumably so dust didn't gather.

Hatespiders · 14/12/2014 14:29

Right-way-up here. We clean a holiday barn, and every time we go in to do it, all the glasses are either one or the other. So people do vary. (We turn them all right-way-up again!)

What a very cheeky MIL! I'd be extremely annoyed at someone interfering with my domestic arrangements like that. Who does she think she is?!

Purplecircle · 14/12/2014 14:33

I put them upside down so they don't get dusty

MagnetsOnItsTail · 14/12/2014 15:22

My MIL (RIP) used to do this. She was worried the glasses would smell 'cupboardy' Confused

Pipbin · 14/12/2014 15:26

Upside down here, but I wouldn't change someone elses.

mawbroon · 14/12/2014 15:41

I just looked in my cupboard. Some are upside down and some are the right way up.

What does that mean then? Wink

Fabulous46 · 14/12/2014 15:48

We have hangers for our glasses between our cupboards and they only fit upside down. I wouldn't have them the right way up otherwise I'd need to rinse them before use (in case dust had got into them).

CremeEggThief · 14/12/2014 15:50

Always, always right way up. Most people don't clean their cupboard shelves often at all. (I cleaned mine the other day for the first time in eighteen months.)

BertieBotts · 14/12/2014 15:53

They get dusty if stored upright and not used often.

usualsuspectsparkly3 · 14/12/2014 15:59

I always put mine upside down.

Years of working in catering.

Bowlersarm · 14/12/2014 15:59

Right way up here.

Although dm used to put them upside down.
