OP wants trifle made without jelly. I think trifle has to have jelly or it's not trifle. Which of us is BU?

Southerner here with a vote for both jelly and sherry

PlumpingUpPartridge · 13/12/2014 12:06

DH has gone off to consult Mrs Beeton and Delia as he claims that they are the authorities on this subject he's already overinvested

KneeQuestion · 13/12/2014 12:09

bigTilly, you would have to get the bus, you certainly couldn't drive after a portion of my trifle Grin

FTR I am a southerner, all the southerners I know are in the jelly camp.

Is it a north/south thing, or a class thing? Wink

PlumpingUpPartridge · 13/12/2014 12:10
Shock

Jelly is not listed in the trifle recipe by either Mrs Beeton or Delia!!!

Trifle without jelly is just stuff piled up in a bowl!

ilovesooty · 13/12/2014 12:15

My mother's home made trifle definitely didn't have any jelly.

KneeQuestion · 13/12/2014 12:32

Plumping, I have seen a Delia one that had a jelly option, it was an article where the jelly issue was discussed.

Think it was in a sunday supplement years ago though, so I can't link or anything.

I hven't done my trifle at christmas this lasy couple of years, I am definitely going to this year though Xmas Smile

NoLongerJustAShopGirl · 13/12/2014 12:32

Orkney bred so pretty Northern - NO JELLY

JamaicanMeEatMincePies · 13/12/2014 12:33

I also only like chocolate "trifle" but then the idea of soggy cake and soggy fruit with lots of alcohol makes me pull a [vomface] Blush

HelloitsmeFell · 13/12/2014 12:37

I like jelly in a trifle but I think a proper trifle does not have jelly. It's less authentic with jelly.

It's a bit like the Carbonara with or without cream debate. I realise that without cream is the authentic way, but I prefer it with.

bigTillyMint · 13/12/2014 12:38

Ah, maybe it's a class thing!

Knee, the bus sounds goodWink!

FriedFishAndBread · 13/12/2014 12:38

Jelly and the swill roll way, I love trifle.

fatlazymummy · 13/12/2014 12:39

To me, trifle has sponges (the proper trifle ones) with jelly and tinned fruit.
Covered with thick custard and a bit of cream or dream topping (yes I was a child of the 70's). No sherry, but I only ate it as a child. The best bit is the jelly infused trifle.

OwlBeGoingToBethlehem · 13/12/2014 12:40

Southerner here with a vote for always jelly and sometimes boozy Grin

cece · 13/12/2014 12:40

Gavel

3littlefrogs · 13/12/2014 12:42

Proper, traditional trifle does not have jelly in it.
Jelly was introduced when instant dessert companies decided to produce something quite unlike trifle, and called it trifle.

bilbodog · 13/12/2014 13:07

sorry - proper trifle definately has noooooooo jelly in it - horrible. From my mother who was original from Manchester area - she only came across jelly in trifles when she moved down to Norfolk. If you look at any recipe for proper trifle they never have jelly in them..............................
I will die before putting jelly in trifle..................................

Izzy24 · 13/12/2014 13:08

Originally a southerner here: definitely no jelly, definitely sherry, real custard (not Birds) but jury out on trifle sponges ........

Actually a LOT of sherry please .

nevergooglebrandybutter · 13/12/2014 13:16

i used to think trifle was horrible, until i learnt how to make it properly, without sodding jelly! and without those little trifle sponge fingers and most definitely without bloody hundreds and thousands!

itispronouncedpenguin · 13/12/2014 13:26

Aren't you supposed to put beef in trifle?

Jelliebabe2 · 13/12/2014 14:06

Blerggggh! Fil makes trifle like this AND grates chocolate on top! Yuk not trifle! My mum makes the best sherry trifle ever no jelly and 100s and 1000s (pastel) on the top! Not Xmas without it Grin

Jelliebabe2 · 13/12/2014 14:09

I'm a southener mind you so is Fil!

SirChenjin · 13/12/2014 14:13

Of course proper trifle has jelly in it - as someone said upthread, it's been made this way for many years. You can leave out the jelly and convince yourself that it's 'proper' trifle, but it's not as nice.

Tru fact.

Pangurban · 13/12/2014 14:15

Oh yes! I'm probably a philistine, but trifle is my very favourite dessert. Sponge, jelly (fruit cocktail in it), thick set custard and a little cream on top. I can live without the cream, but the rest is heaven.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/12/2014 14:17

YANBU. Trifle is not trifle without jelly, it's just a creamy pudding.
