My Neice..

She is nagging for one so she can make "iMovies"

I am furious that my sister is considering it. She can't afford it and is suffering extreme anxiety due to her childs demands.

If she can't afford it then she shouldn't get it.

AugustaGloop · 11/12/2014 18:14

If she just wants it to make imovies, it is OTT. If she will also use it for homework etc, then fine but only if it is affordable.

JT05 · 11/12/2014 18:27

Missed the can't afford it bit!? No one should buy anything they can't afford. Life still goes on without iMacs.

Soamiasnob · 11/12/2014 18:33

Yabu

A Mac could let her start designing clothes or becoming a YouTube millionaire. A phone won't do these.

Windywenceslas · 11/12/2014 18:43

If she can't afford it, she shouldn't buy it.

Not always getting what we want and living within ones means are important life lessons for children IMO, but then my DFs motto when I was growing up was "life's not fair" so maybe it's how I was raised Grin

Can't believe someone's spending over a grand on a little girl, instead make a donation to crisis.org

Xmas2014MN9993 · 11/12/2014 18:45

She can get a way cheaper tablet to make movies on.

marne2 · 11/12/2014 19:01

How do we know the mother hasn't donated to charity too?

I think it's no ones business what someone buys their child for Christmas. I'm sure the little girl will make good use of her iMac, it will help her with her homework, help her use her imagination making video's and can be used for many other things. I would rather buy something like this rather than a xbox or other games console, a iMac will last her for years, if they can afford it then what's the problem, if they can't afford it than its their fault if they get in to debt ( no one else's ).

Let them get on with it and mind your own, surely you have your own life to concentrate on? Buy your kids what ever you feel is appropriate and stop worrying about what others are doing.

Summerisle1 · 11/12/2014 19:04

If a parent can afford an iMac then no, I wouldn't say it is at all ludicrous.

If, however, as your post suggests, the parent in question has got herself into a state of terrible anxiety over her daughter's unaffordable expectations then better to try and offer some support rather than label her as being "ludicrous".

fuzzpig · 11/12/2014 19:18

(Complete and utter hijack alert, sorry, but Summerisle is your name after the wicker man?!)

Summerisle1 · 11/12/2014 19:21

It might well be, fuzzpig

Every time I see your name I get the songs in my head! :o

Summerisle1 · 11/12/2014 19:32

Am humming "Summer is Icumen In" right now!

flowery · 11/12/2014 19:36

Buying a computer for a 9 yo isn't ludicrous.

Buying a very expensive gift you can't afford is ludicrous.

Getting furious because someone else is considering buying one for their child is also ludicrous.
