to not take my DS to baby clinic?

to get weighed?

He's nearly 6 months old, on 91st percentile for weight, a tall healthy baby boy. He's not been weighed for 4 weeks now, and I'm reluctant to take him to baby clinic to get weighed because it's so cold outside and in the clinic. I'd have to undress him to get weighed and he's just getting over a cold. If we don't go today I can only take him in 5 weeks as we're going away next week.

How important is it to keep weighing them in the baby clinic every month? how often would you take your 6mo child to get weighed?

Weighing babies is not compulsory. My lovely health visitor told me that. She said that if you periodically needed to buy them larger clothes then all was well.

I think mine got weighed once after they left hospital. Too much faff with two of them at once.

fatterface · 10/12/2014 17:38

Average just 4 year old is about 16kg I think. DS1 stopped using a harness at about 4.5, heavier than 15kg but not 18kg. DS2 was heavier but also outgrew the stage 1 seat height-wise before 4. DD is 9 months and still fits in the baby seat fine though is over 10kg.

Had my DD weighed a few times immediately after birth, then at 6 months, then at her 12 month check. Nothing in between. I didn't even know it was recommended to get them weighed every month?! I was never told to.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 10/12/2014 18:12

Hopping its not because of cuts your 6 month old hasnt seen a hv for a few months- thats the standard protocol for health visitors unless you or your child have additional need

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 10/12/2014 18:13

Im a hv.
I never took mine to be weighed.

Why would you want to take your baby to a possible germ infested clinic to be weighed on scales that probably have not been tested for accuracy for years? Grin

this is not a description of my place of employment

fatterface · 10/12/2014 18:55

Got - once a month is a maximum amount you're allowed to take them rather than recommended Grin

cathpip · 10/12/2014 18:58

Is it wrong to admit that after dc2 hit 6 months the only place they get weighed is at the vets on their scales when the dogs need to go, I also have a dc3 now, the vets find it hilarious Blush.

Our doctor just has weigh in during their routine appointments. So DD has gotten weighed at 2weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 4months, 6 months, 9 months, and the next one will be at 1 year.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 10/12/2014 19:27

"DD2 got weighed recently... on a trip to A+E after her latest experiment in discovering if the law of gravity is negotiable went wrong."

We've done that one too. They had a cool weighing chair for her to sit on (thankfully it wasn't serious. I hope yours wasn't either).

chocolatedonut · 10/12/2014 19:52

I haven't had my DD weighed since the last time the health visitor came out after she was born. I have been invited to the weighing clinic but I'm not concerned so not going out of my way to go. She's 6 months old now.

I got completely fixated on DS's weight. I took him every week, and watched him drift from 75th centile down to 9th. He just wasn't interested if I tried to feed him more often, and wouldn't take a bottle, so I couldn't top up. The HV ended up coming to my house if I missed a week, which made me feel utterly hopeless and completely hounded. I'm convinced it was a major contributing factor in my PND. DS is now 3, and is a happy, healthy beanpole Smile.
I now have a DD who is 3 months. She has been weighed three times. To begin with, my DH had to stop me from going to the clinic every week. Now, I take confidence from her gorgeous chubby thighs and general smiley deliciousness and don't plan on getting her weighed until I have to.
That's a very waffley way of saying that weighing can sometimes do more harm than good!

Lazymummy2014 · 10/12/2014 20:39

I've never been to a weigh in clinic. DD is a right little chunk, tall and fat, and as she's ebf and we're just starting to experiment with baby led weaning, I know she can't be overfed. I occasionally jump on the bathroom scales with her to get an idea of weight if it's going to be useful for car seat type stuff. When I took her for her last lot of jabs I told the nurse about my lack of arsedness, half expecting to get a little bit told off, and she told me that I was clearly a confident mum with a thriving baby and to carry on!

Mrsdavidcaruso · 10/12/2014 20:43

I have taken my puppy to the vets more times then I have taken my Ds to the clinic (had them both since August)

Purplepoodle · 10/12/2014 21:14

Dc1 weighed virtually weekly - neurotic first time mum, dc2 weekly for first few wks as bf then monthly, dc3 hasn't been near the baby clinic as I'm lazy and confident he's just fine

notquiteruralbliss · 10/12/2014 21:23

No, not at all. I didn't take mine. Couldn't 't see the point.

CalpolOnToast · 10/12/2014 21:31

Didn't realise we were supposed to go every month up to 6 months until I saw it in the Red Book when DS about 9 months!

chilephilly · 10/12/2014 21:35

I remember doggedly breastfeeding DD2. At about 18 wks I think I went to baby clinic and she was underweight, but happy, healthy and doing everything she should be. "Anything worrying you?" asked the HV. "Her weight" I said. "Easily solved" said the HV. "Don't weigh her". And I never did again. She's 13 now, still skinny, and fit as a butcher's dog.

fatterface · 10/12/2014 21:36

It doesn't say you should go every month though, it says no more often than every month.
