To think this was not a racist comment re santa?

With a group of friends and friend A mentioned that she'd taken her two santa believing children to see Father Christmas at the weekend. She was a bit disappointed as santa was 'grumpy, Asian, about 25 and really skinny so about as far as santa as you can get.'
Friend B said this was racist as it's objecting about someone on grounds of ethnicity. I don't think it's racist - It wouldn't bother me if santa wasn't white as ds knows the santa we see isn't the 'real' santa but I guess if you've two tinies expecting to see a fat jolly old man it is a little bit disappointing when faced with reality.

Aibu to think friend A isn't racist?

My dad didn't do santa. But, he insisted on helping in some other way, instead.

i was just discussing this with my DH, and it is a continuity issue more than anything else. If you were watching a film, and the lead actor changed from black to white without any explanation, of course you would question it. It is common sense. Your friend is not being racist at all. The casting for Santa was wrong IMO because it doesn't fit with the kids expectations. Santa is a character, he is white. If he was Asian or black, then he should be portrayed as such

I don't think it's racist at all. If you are trying to accurately portray a character in a way that a child believes it is him, then you have to have someone who actually looks like him!

I agree that the main objection would be the grumpiness, not the race of the FC. But it wasn't racist to express surprise/disappointment at the unusual appearance of this one. The FCs I've seen had such luxurious beards/hair that you wouldn't particularly notice what race they were.

Not racist at all. Santa is portrayed as a white obese male with a beard. Choosing an Asian slim male doesn't make any sense, it's the same as choosing a woman or not giving him a beard IMO. Some roles can be changed, Annie is an excellent example of that or James Bond- they gave it to a blonde blue eyed actor and it works. But Santa can't be messed with! People expect to see a fat white bearded guy in a red suit and that's what they should get.

Our City centre's santa is slim. I refuse to take the DC to see him because it's weird. Even if they chose a slim male, they should at least go to the effort of padding him out! It just looks wrong, reminds me too much of bad santa I think Grin.
