Buying DD a present from PILs

Every year PILs get me to buy DD a present from them, they then give me the money for it, get SIL to wrap and present it to DD on Christmas day. It's the same with birthdays. With their other GC they get SIL to buy the presents (even though some if the DC aren't hers).
They are perfectly able to get out to the shops themselves.
I get that it's good that DD is getting something she actually wants as a present but something about it irritates me. It's like they don't put any effort in but still get the glory pleasure of giving DD a gift.
They even asked me to wrap it one year.
Would this annoy you or am I a miserable git?

Doesn't even occur to my PILS to buy DD anything at all. Not birthdays, not nothing. They live in abroad, but could easily buy and post something, or ask me to get something. But, nada. I buy her presents and pretend they are from them, so she is happy. We even Skype them and show them the presents they 'gave' her. They say 'oh how lovely!'. And that's it. Don't get the message for next time. And, of course, they don't give me the money for them.

Fucks me off no end.

I think it solves a lot of problems.

XP's parents send me a gift voucher and ask me to buy the dc's something they would like and wrap it. We don't see them anymore so they know they haven't a clue what the dc's need and it prevents duplicates.

Where do you buy a throne for a baby?

cookiemonster100 · 09/12/2014 22:16

Oh I have this. I seem to be the present buyer for everyone & it's dog lately. I have said I am not buying presents for others to my kids & DH, they need to organise it themselves, if they want to.
Watch how my MIL will text me on 23rd saying something along the lines of I have transferred a £10 into your account can you pop to the shops & get grandchildren their Xmas presents from us. Drives me insane.

bigbluestars · 09/12/2014 22:22

I have to do this. I even have to buy gifts for myself so OH can give them to the kids to give to me.

I think she was so gobsmacked that they were in, made their smash-and-grab raid, and left, before she could get a word out, yellowdinosaur! She adopted a dual policy of a) lying about what she'd bought and ideas for presents and b) hiding things a damn sight better!

Bulbasaur · 09/12/2014 22:47

Loving though that on the grabby present thread everyone is aghast at the fact that someone might demand the present they want yet on here it's seen as a plus to be able to choose exactly what you want and to dismiss sometime else's carefully chosen presents as tat

Because demanding it from an unwilling giver is rude. Giving a list to a person that willingly asks for one is perfectly acceptable.

sanfairyanne · 09/12/2014 23:15

i do this for my parents. suits us all fine.

Some of these posts are brilliant. Whilst it's good in a way that there's an avoidance of tat you don't want kind of thing as other posters have said, it is rather bloody lazy.

How is this for cheek. Last year I had an incredibly stressful and incredibly skint Christmas. So many difficult things going on at the time. I was a single parent struggling for every penny. I organised a babysitter for one evening (this was all I could manage at the time, dc was only tiny and had health problems) so I went out and got all shopping boxed off in one evening (possibly the week before the big day).

My mum waited until I was leaving, knowing I was skint and had a huge list and this was the only time I had to shop, and gave me a list of people she had to buy for and told me to get things for them, mostly work colleuges I had never met. did not give me any present suggestions or cash so apparently I was supposed to be spending my one night of shopping planning and buying presents for her friendsHmm
As if I wasn't pissed off enough, I decided to brave our local tesco superstore on Christmas eve for food (took baby with me). Still skint and my mum rang saying she hadn't got anything for dad and could I pick him and my brother up some presents please (no cash or ideas but was very specific in that it wasn't allowed to be aftershave or wash stuff). Then five minutes later my dad rings and says he's not got anything for mum so could I pick up some for her.
It must be so bloody hard having cars sitting there doing nothing and grown up kids so you can shop after bedtime if you like. I clearly had nothing better to do....

BrereRabbit · 09/12/2014 23:19

The best bit was that neither of them really knew what was for who or what they were wrapping and they ended up opening each others on Christmas morning. How bloody thoughtless!

SavoyCabbage · 10/12/2014 02:19

Pico, my PIL live in New York. The combination of them being able to buy almost anything and having no taste has not worked well for me over the years.

butterfliesinmytummy · 10/12/2014 03:16

I get money by PayPal from 2 grandparents, a great grandparent and an aunt to buy my dcs Christmas presents as we live overseas. Works really well, no unwanted crap.

hissingcat · 10/12/2014 07:37

wow brere how thoughtless and selfish.
I hope your parents are more organised this year.
