Baroness Jenkin

AIBU to be getting fucking sick of this demonising of poor people? I'm not rich, wouldn't put myself in a poor bracket, but I can cook.......Is it OK for me to say 'Rich can't Cook'-with their maids and servants, blimey! Can the rich dress themselves???

Plebs, Stupid cab drivers, white van man, it's all getting a bit ridiculous now isn't it?.......or is this just the Media stirring things up before an election?

Listening to her made my blood boil. How can she be so il-informed ? It is like Ed Milliband getting the cost of a weekly shop wrong. These people just haven't a clue.Shocking, just really shocking. The poster who spoke about gruel has it right.

Money is such a cushion. I'm cooking for 10 tomorrow. As it's for a work event I can charge in the food. I bought 2 legs of lamb and when I went to marinade them tonight one was off. I'm a bit that I've got drive to one of 2 or 3 easily accessible places to go and buy one first thing and idly wondering whether I will bill for 3.
If it was a meal for my family and I couldn't afford to replace it I'd be devastated and of course I'd choose reliable over cheap and nutritious.
Stupid woman.

Maybe families struggling with fuel costs could be given those slow cooking bags- the ones where you only have to bring a pot to the boil, then pop it into the bag for several more hours to carry on cooking.

I haven't looked at the original article or clip.

However, there is a lot of truth in what the Baroness has said. And this is not anything to do with "the rich".

To say that poor people can't cook can be read three ways - don't have the skills, don't have the resources, or don't have he motivation.

For me, as a non-poor person, I have the skills and resources, but not always the motivation. In those circumstances, I will go for premium options - eating out or superior ready meals.

I think cooking is made a lot easier by having access to nice gadgets, such as a food processor or specialist knives. It's a lot harder if all you have is a hot plate and basic microwave. Food bank clients often have almost no cooking facilities, so it makes it very hard for them to actually cook. A kettle, microwave and hot plate may be all they have to work with.

As for skills, this depends on how you have been brought up both at home and school. A lack of skills is not class dependent, as many precious middle class kids are not allowed to do anything remotely risky.

The most basic skill is sure chopping vegetables, and this should enable anyone to have a home-cooked meal every day. You don't need higher skills.
