AIBU to think my fiancée is being a 'nob'

My eldest daughter has an eating disorder(so any advice on that would be nice) but its affected her teeth an awful lot. This afternoon she had a filling, and now the anaesthetic has worn off and she is in a little bit of pain. My Fiancee is training to be a nurse, and thinks he knows everything there is to know about medication. He has just given her two spoonfuls of calpol, when he could have given her four. I would have given her four as I don't like to see them in pain. Gah! I don't know if I AIBU to be cross? Shrug I dunno, I am just stressed I guess.

If its still sore tomorrow maybe get stuff for teething. There's a clear liquid anesthetic to rub on gums and it numbs,
I used the some for you some for me method Wink

Cant for the life of me remember whats its called though.

OddBones · 08/12/2014 21:45

It's called Anbesol or Ambesol.

thewomaninwhite · 08/12/2014 21:47

Do you mean Anbesol oddbones? It's good. Hope your DD feels better tomorrow op. Dental pain is horrid.

thewomaninwhite · 08/12/2014 21:47

Sorry for cross post!

My dentist told me never to use heat, it can make infections spread as the heat pulls it into surrounding tissue.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 09/12/2014 01:57

Poor wee thing. I hope you can get some good advice and support for her eating disorder, as well as help to protect her teeth as much as possible. Has she has them coated?

ClangerOnaComeDown · 09/12/2014 06:55

Arnica is your friend.

Hope your dd feels better. Mouth pain is the pits.

Cheesilycheerful · 09/12/2014 17:13

Hi zoe,

I work with Ed. Teeth problems are usually due to vomiting. It's important to rinse out her mouth well with water and not brush immediately after vomiting as the enamel is softened. In our region Ed services are Paeds but mainly CAMHS for therapy which in her age group is usually family based treatment. B-eat is the British ED Association. It has fab info for parents, helplines and a safe monitored forum for Young people

www.b-eat.co.uk

The book I advise all parents to get is this one. It's brill, written by the leading expert plus carers. It's around£10 and available widely online.

Skills based learning for caring for a loved one with an eating disorder- the new Maudsley method by Janet Treasure.

Good luck with your daughter recovery. Family is the most important thing in Ed recovery and it already sounds like you're doing a great job. Best wishes!

Are fillings that painful? Anyway a little bit of pain won't kill her. Everyone feels pain (mentally or physically) at times, better to get used to it

NoImSpartacus · 09/12/2014 17:32

Off topic but I just wanted to say that MsVestibule your reaction to being 'told off' was really mature and refreshing, and v un-MN like !

PedlarsSpanner · 09/12/2014 17:37

Youareallbonkers what a spectacularly unhelpful post.

Piggy backing calpol and brufen will keep her comfy, Zoe

AFAIK the new guidelines for administering paracetamol to children is to go by weight where possible, but I would be using ibuprofen to help with the swelling.

zoelikesjam · 10/12/2014 19:22

Thank you so very much for all your advice. She was, unfortunately up all night with it.

She is having her teeth coated next monday, which I am dreading :/ Not the coating, but she has got to have two teeth pulled out as, due to her eating disorder they have just crumbled :( She was so brave when It came to having the needle.

youreallyarebonkers I don't EVER want my children to be in pain, be it emotional or physical. At the moment she is going through so much emotional pain, and pain I can take away I bloody well will.

OP you are a great mother and helping your DD deal with the dental pain is of course the right thing.

I don't have any useful advice just wanted to say the above.

ClangerOnaComeDown · 10/12/2014 19:52

I really do recommend arnica (sp?). Take a tablet before the dentist and then a few 15 minutes apart afterwards. It helps with bruising and swelling.

"I would have thought they just swallow tablets at that age"

My 14 year old won't swallow tablets. I give her soluble paracetamol if she needs it.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 10/12/2014 21:27

I can't swallow tablets very well at my age, I tend to use soluble or crush.
