To not understand why some people make their DC wear slippers?

TimelyNameChangey · 07/12/2014 22:37

I've just never quite grasped why some parents make their dc wear slippers. Surely they're a matter of personal choice?

What's going to happen to a child's feet inside their own home? Confused

My friend...she's all "X put your slippers on!" in a stern voice.

Why?

I asked her once and she looked Confused and said "It's cold."

Her DS is like my DDs and likes being barefoot or socked...what's up with that?

It wasn't cold inside and even if it was it's not cold enough to get frostbite or anything!

Do you make your DC wear slippers and why?

DS3 always walks around the house in bare feet. We have wood & tiled floors, no carpets, but he doesn't seem to feel the cold. I offered to get him some slippers but he says there's no point as he won't wear them.

The rest of us wear socks or slippers, but they are optional. It seems odd to insist on children wearing them.

Twiceover · 07/12/2014 22:55

My gran insists on slippers indoors. Afaik she thinks it's unhygienic to have horrible sweaty feet on her carpetGrin . Also my grandpa was a keen fisherman and quite untidy so she worried about you stepping on a fish hook. That's probably quite a niche concern though.

MistAndAWeepingRain · 07/12/2014 22:56

Well no I don't make them wear them. But we always wear slippers at home in the winter and they happily go and put them on themselves when they take off their outdoor shoes. If they staged a slipper revolt I wouldn't force them though.

mausmaus · 07/12/2014 22:57

my parent's would like my dc to wear them and socks and cardigan and scarf or they 'might catch cold' or get an uti Confused
they prefer not to.
maybe I would if they had constantly a cold, but they don't and they don't slip or fall often.

TimelyNameChangey · 07/12/2014 22:58

I suppose it seems uncomfortable to me....I don't like wearing them...can never find a pair that feels comfortable....the DC have had them but ignore them.

I make mine wear socks when it's cold.

I threatened my youngest with "consequences" today if he didn't put his socks on. It makes me feel weird seeing their bare feet when it's so cold. I know it's their feet but I really don't like it.

P.S. I have no idea what the consequences would have been. Xmas Grin

mausmaus · 07/12/2014 22:59

and if they step on lego it's their own fault for not tidying up propely

usualsuspectsparkly3 · 07/12/2014 22:59

Mine had the option to wear slippers if they wanted too.
I never forced them.

I hate slippers, much prefer bare feet.

Discopanda · 07/12/2014 23:01

My mum has always been a great slippers advocate and now they just annoy me, I'm barefoot 9 times out of 10

AlmaMartyr · 07/12/2014 23:02

I don't like wearing them either OP, I find them uncomfortable. When it's cold I put on an extra thick pair of socks, or wear two pairs. DCs have slippers but I don't make them wear them and they don't generally choose to.

HenriettaTurkey · 07/12/2014 23:06

DH grew up in the house we now live in. When he was little he slipped on the wooden floor and broke his collar bone, so he likes DS to wear slippers.

The clue's in the name as to why! (I only realised that the other day!)

TimelyNameChangey · 07/12/2014 23:10

Henrietta I thought it was because you "slipped" them on.....

FriendlyLadybird · 07/12/2014 23:10

We have a bare feet, shoes, or slippers rule. Twice as a child and once as an adult I have slipped on varnished wood floors and hurt myself quite badly. I won't allow socks only (though that is what DD would prefer).

elQuintoConyo · 07/12/2014 23:13

1: Our floors are tiled; slippers = no slippage.

2: Our floors are tiled, they're fecking freezing.

3: DS won't wear out his socks if he is wearing his slippers.

4: DS won't get wee on his feet if he is earing his slippers.

5: DS won't get spilt porridge/milk/bits of fruit etc caked to the soles of his socks, if he is earing his slippers.

6: DS won't be taken to A&E in toe agony if he steps on a bit of traintrack/dropped cutlery/piece of Lego/one of DH's nuts (walnut today, almond yesterday, if you must know).

I'm sure I can think of more DS leads a terribly interesting life.

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 07/12/2014 23:19

Two reasons - 1. Socks get too filthy and come out of a wash (even a 59!wash) with black soles. 2. Grippy soles so skidding across laminate doesn't result in teeth falling out

TimelyNameChangey · 07/12/2014 23:22

None of mine have ever had their teeth fall out due to bare feet. Laminate floors here too.

I was forced to wear slippers all the time indoors as a child, mainly to stop me hurting my feet if I stood on something (according to DF). My parents have this so ingrained in them that they have bought slippers for me, DH, DSis and DSIL to wear whenever we go to DP's house. My DH rarely wears his, despite my parents "gentle" hinting (e.g. following him around with them). Our DCs don't wear slippers often and I do get a stab every so often that I should be making them, but I don't do anything about it. I feel naked without my slippers though, so I always wear mine around the house.

MrsRhettButler · 07/12/2014 23:26

I have dogs and I don't like dog hair in socks so we have a hard bottomed slippers rule for downstairs unless they're just in the living room which the dogs don't go in. I wouldn't make them wear them though if it wasn't for that.

Inertia · 07/12/2014 23:29

Because I'm fed up of hearing them moan if they hurt their feet by treading on something or banging a toe on something. And I had a nasty foot injury myself once , from treading on something barefoot.

HenriettaTurkey · 07/12/2014 23:33

You're probably right, Timely!

BlackeyedSusan · 07/12/2014 23:34

mime wear them as this is what is best for them in our circumstances. slipper free in the living room though.

SurfsUp1 · 07/12/2014 23:34

I can understand the "no running around in socks" rule, but if I were to enforce that it would be with "socks off or slippers on" rather than forcing anyone to wear slippers. I only force them to put their slippers on if they are whinging about cold feet - can't stand it when they whinge without doing anything to help themselves!!

riverboat1 · 07/12/2014 23:54

Heh, this has been an issue here this weekend.

We have tiled floors throughout downstairs, which are really cold. Even with socks on my feet still get cold on them, has to be thick wooly socksvor slippers.

DSS however would seemingly happily spend all day barefoot. Just looking at his bare feet on the floors makes me feel freezing! I always tell him to put his socks on at least, but it's a real battle. I don't know if I should let it go, but it just doesnt seem right, bare feet on cold tiled floor in winter!

TwoLittleTerrors · 08/12/2014 00:00

We have laminate flooring and DD1 has a pair of slippers. It's an option I gave her if she wants it. But she barely wears them. She's 3yo and doesn't seem to have problems running around in socks.

Not sure why they would trip more or step on things Confused

NickiFury · 08/12/2014 00:50

"do you make your dc wear slippers and why?"

That was your question. Was I not supposed to answer because my dc have ASD? Was I supposed to realise that your question wasn't for me OP? If so, why? Confused
