...to think that certain songs just shouldn't be heard at Christmas.

For example, the Mariah Carey thing which is just terrible. Then there's that East 17 dirge which isn't even a Christmas song in the first place. No amount of church bells in the final two minutes can make it so. "All Around My Hat" by Steeleye Span is
another oddity. I like the record, even though it sounds like the Wombles on account of the Mike Batt production, but it's not Christmassy by any means (their other hit, "Gaudete ", is).

oh yes and 'giving' = 'fucking"

vienna1981 · 06/12/2014 21:45

And just who the hell decided a duet with Bing Crosby and David Bowie was a good idea ? Might as well have had Karen Carpenter duetting with Motorhead.

I never liked Little Drummer Boy. Every year at secondary school Christmas Concert, umpteen upward key changes, violins screeching in protest. Almost makes Mariah Carey sound good.

I like Stop the Cavalry and Freinheit - Keeping the dream alive and Phil Spector christmas hits.

sashh · 07/12/2014 05:26

Stop the cavalry - nowt to do with X-mas

DilysMoon · 07/12/2014 05:53

Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey is my guilty pleasure Grin Even the kids dislike it. There I've said it. Grin

DilysMoon · 07/12/2014 05:54

Oooh jiggety jig ee aw ee aw. . . . .

Redglitter · 07/12/2014 06:12

I hate a Fairytale of New York. Never understood why it's a Christmas song. Ok they wish each other a Merry Christmas (of sorts) but it's hardly festive. Can't bear to listen to it

Longdistance · 07/12/2014 06:43

Yy to Fairytale of NY. Makes me want to vomit listening to that shit song. I have to switch it off in the car when driving, and I walk out of shops and refuse to buy anything.

LineRunner · 07/12/2014 06:54

Rocking around the Christmas Tree by Mel Smith and Kim Wilde is fun.

The best is Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea.

Stop the cavalry - nowt to do with X-mas

Apart from the bit to do with Xmas.

Ktay · 07/12/2014 07:13

On subject of Chris Rea - this Daily Mash piece made me giggle earlier in the week

LineRunner · 07/12/2014 07:20

Ktay, I like that!

SanityClause · 07/12/2014 07:25

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, Hedgehogs? We always used to sing that at our school Carols by Candlelight, in Australia. I love it!

"No kangaroos, or duck-billed platypuses,
I only like hippopotamuses,
And hippopotamuses like me, too!"

SanityClause · 07/12/2014 07:25

Driving home for Christmas is the worst!

So dreary!

whojamaflip · 07/12/2014 07:27

There's always the classic "grandma got run over by a reindeer" to put you in the Christmas mood - dc insist on playing this ad nauseum Confused

LineRunner · 07/12/2014 07:29

How about The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot?

OwlinaTree · 07/12/2014 07:32

It wouldn't be Christmas without these classics would it? Is Gaudete the song Alan partridge sings when he takes his date to the owl sanctuary?

slippermaiden · 07/12/2014 07:35

I believe in Father Christmas by Greg lake is my absolute favourite. Yes the lyrics are sad/cynical but it's an absolutely beautiful song.

Panzee · 07/12/2014 07:39

Not liking Christmas pop songs?
Complaining about Mariah Carey and Fairytale of New York?
This is not the thread for me. I'm off to listen to my Now That's What I Call Christmas album.
Xmas Sad Xmas Sad

LiegeAndLief · 07/12/2014 07:56

I'm a big Steeleye Span fan (yes, really) and have nev heard all around my hat played as a Christmas song. Gaudete is my absolute all time favourite.

Those of you who hate Fairy Tale of New York, have you heard the Ronan Keating cover? That is truly awful.

vienna1981 · 07/12/2014 08:07

Gary Glitter had a remarkable comeback in 1984 with a top ten Christmas hit. I refuse to mention it by name. Oddly enough it just doesn't get played any more.

I'd forgotten about that Chris Rea abomination. Eurgh ! Worse than Maria Carey. Jona Lewie ? Hmm, I'm more tolerant of that one now. Must be an age thing.

Stop the Cavelry a protest song that happens to mention Chistmas.

But I think the Op is unreasonable, I watched Die Hard the other night to get me in the mood for the season of goodwill. Top Christmas movie.

Honeydragon · 07/12/2014 08:21

Adam Faiths Lonely Pup, now THAT IS a christmas pop song.

dreamingofwineandcheese · 07/12/2014 09:50

Grin Panzee

I don't like Elvis' Blue Christmas, always seems really depressing.

I LOVE Fairytale of New York and it gets turned up to full volume whenever it's on the radio.

LineRunner · 07/12/2014 10:02

Cliff, anybody??
