Dh is having a dry weekend so came home with large 2 innocent smoothie cartons (half price) and has already consumed one and will be on the other soon.

Aibu to thnk this habit isn't really that healthy?

It is cheaper though at 3 quid at least

It doesn't matter where the calories come from calories are calories.

GraysAnalogy · 05/12/2014 20:53

It's much better than alcohol. The body isn't receiving any nourishment really from a pint, least it's getting something from the smoothie.

Does it really matter?

GraysAnalogy · 05/12/2014 20:55

It doesn't matter where the calories come from calories are calories

So 200 calories of chocolate is the same as 200 calories of fruit?

It's not.

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 05/12/2014 20:58

But its a moot point.

Whether its 200 calories from beer or 200 from a smoothie, at least he'd be getting some good from the smoothie.

Although yeah, 2 litres is a LOT.

youareallbonkers · 05/12/2014 21:03

for calorie counting purposes 200 calories of anything is the same as 200 of something else. Obvious innit?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 05/12/2014 21:05

He'll be shitting through the eye of a needle tomorrow

XiCi · 05/12/2014 21:06

Actually beer has quite high amounts of B vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium and selenium. It's also a good source of soluble fibre so to say it's just sugar and alcohol is not true. I'd rather have a couple of drinks than 2 litres of manufactured smoothie any day.

GraysAnalogy · 05/12/2014 21:33

Who's counting calories? OP asked about which was healthier. Calorie counting isn't what's healthier.

NoArmani I was thinking that!

GraysAnalogy · 05/12/2014 21:35

And anyway no, just because you can have 200 calories from protein or 200 calories from fat or 200 from carbs. The way the body uses them is different. All units of energy yes, but metabolised differently.

raltheraffe · 05/12/2014 21:35

I used to drink lots of that Sunny Delight until a kid in the newspapers turned orange. I just stick to water or orange cordial now.

GraysAnalogy · 05/12/2014 21:37

I think they ended up changing their ingredients didn't they ral after that scandal Grin

I LOVEEEE fruit juice but I don't kid myself that it's healthy for me. I have a glass a day then stick to ice water with fruit or herbs in it. Did try that Pear Drops cordial the other day though and that was nice

marryj · 06/12/2014 06:29

Well the cartons are 750ml, he ended up havinga bit more than a litre and wasn't on the toilet lol

It's the pulping process Japanese. Intrinsic sugars that are bound up in the fruits become extrinsic

Not when chewed, hence why whole fruit doesn't cause dental caries and fruit juice does. No idea about the stomach, I only know about teeth!

marryj · 06/12/2014 08:50

Isn't that about saliva though?

No

I thought it was the chewing producing saliva. Your supposed to chew smoothies to aid digestion

Gawjushun · 06/12/2014 19:01

I can't stand innocent smoothies because of the twee writing on the side of the carton. I'd just buy an own brand copy if I fancied one.

Ugh forgot about sunny d! I used to work in a supermarket for my Saturday job when that stuff was popular. Parents would give their kids litre bottles of it to neck while they were pushed round in the trolley. It was incredibly popular! with people buying gallons of the crap because it was 'healthy'. Amazing.

TheChandler · 06/12/2014 19:06

This is a brilliant satirical series, even by mumsnet-reality standards. A few days ago, we had the OP start a thread about her healthy dinner of nachos and chips, comparing them to cordon bleu, and now we have alcohol compared to fruit smoothies (just because both contain sugar).

I am looking forward to an entire menu of chocolate and crisps next week. The chocolate for instance could contain ginger, lemon and orange, so you could get three of your five a day. The crisps could be pickled onion and tomato flavoured, so you could get the other two.

Yum.

Liara · 06/12/2014 19:41

Thechandler, I was thinking exactly the same.

Baked beans are healthy because they are one of your 5 a day, but fruit is eeevilll....

specialsubject · 06/12/2014 20:13

neither is healthy, but at least beer isn't sold as a health drink!

the smoothies are stuffed with sugar. Doesn't he have teeth to eat real food?

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 06/12/2014 20:20

Tell him to mix it with sparkling water. I mix about 1/3 smoothie to 2/3 sparkling water. That might be too watered down for him, but he might find 50/50 a refreshing drink?
