First World Problem, so apologising in advance. We are moving house. New build..we are broke, owe ££ to workmen. It's (ob) a v bad time of year for having no spare cash & we need to move before I return to work from Mat Leave (in 3 weeks) or it'll be v v difficult to move at all. So no real option of waiting. We need a new fridge freezer. DH is set on gorgeous Siemens side by side larder fridge & freezer. Lots of £££££. He thinks we should be cobbling together money to buy a Siemens fridge & to move with no freezer OR use a freezer he can get through work. That we won't waste £ on a FF we don't want. The freezer he can get through work has been used to store dead rodents!!!!!!!! And he reckons it'll be fine if he cleans it out with plenty of scalding water & cleaning solutions. I'm saying no. We should buy a cheap combination FF & sell when we can afford our dream ones…..WWYD?

If you but a 2nd hand freezer how would you know that hasn't had rats (or humans) in it?

AdamLambsbreath · 05/12/2014 11:45

Because of this thread, everyone here who's bought a second-hand freezer is now looking at it out of the corner of their eye and wondering if it's been used to store dead rats.

Love it Grin

Our freezer is in a shed outside and we've just discovered rats out there. Again. Eek!

Rats are clever bastards but I'm confident they can't open the door. I will be cleaning everything down after we have eliminated the rats, though.

But there is no way I'm chucking that food.

My father used to work in docks where it was cold enough at times - he once saw a tough wharf cat jump after a rat in the water and die of shock whereas the rat was used to it and swam off.

There were huge refrigerated containers. He said that big rats with luxuriant fur had evolved to live inside them and no one would ever say.

That could have been a scary story though.

We have snakes. Rodents are in the freezer nicely wrapped in plastic and in boxes.

I highly doubt these rodents were just freely lying all over the freezer.

I find it funny that dead rodents make you squeamish when you'll happily store dead cows, fish, chickens, and pigs in your freezers. A dead animal is no more disgusting than any other dead animal. Grin

The freezer will have killed any bacteria. You'd be fine as long as it smell like formaldehyde or anything like that.

I kept maggots in my freezer. Also a dead bird. Don't really see the issue.

Bulbasaur · 05/12/2014 20:10

Sometimes I have dead rodents in my fridge. I even cook them.

They are rabbits.

Rabbits are lagomorphs. Rodents have bones in their penis.

You're welcome. :)

Also a dead bird

Just the one dead bird, puds?

Is it always the same one?

I feel like there's a story behind this
