Im asthmatic and have some reaction to them. People seem to want to cover themselves in this artificial crap and I find it hard to breeth and run out quickly usually in a very dishevelled state.

YANBU. It cannot be good for anyone to breathe that crap in on a daily basis. I can't believe they are so popular yet clearly they are as shelves are full of them. Shock

I never walk through the perfume/cosmetics bit of dept stores. Am quite willing to sacrifice that - others have a right to buy perfume! But I don't think it is too much to ask for a spray free zone in a changing room of a gym/pool.

BeCool · 03/12/2014 22:15

Btw I am not asthmatic- but I think spray free shared spaces are a fab idea.

Samcro · 03/12/2014 22:19

wow really
you want to ban sprays
what next?

Roseformeplease · 03/12/2014 22:25

They are banned in my school because of the effect on asthmatics. It took a while to get through but there were no complaints and there have been no problems. I have also had to ask MiL to open the window and close the door when she is using hairspray - we have no aerosols in the house because of my and DS's asthma.

But....not sure in public places. I am generally wary of removing personal freedom. Perhaps "spray free zones" but then you have the issue of policing it.

Perfumes make me ill. Horrible migraines. I find it hard to protect myself if the air is full of vile smelling spray. So while others have the right to wear what they like I really dislike spray ons and wish people would think before spraying in public places.

Oh dear. Looks like I'm set to become a sweaty rashy armpitted pariah Grin

I work with someone that was meh about using sprays. Everyone else's problem if they don't like sprays. There is no reason why I should stop..
She sprayed in the hall, someone said in a jokey way about trying to kill staff what with the asthmatics and the alchohol allergy. She shrugged her shoulders. Luckily we were far away and good ventilation.
A few weeks later, just as we stepped in the lift and the doors closed out came the spray. Huge asthma attack and an epipen for the allergy person.
Don't know what either of us could have done to avoid it. Spent the night in hospital asking myself that.

I thought we were talking about deodorant in changing rooms - now we seem to be talking about lifts and department stores!

I never get my deodorant (or perfume either) out in lifts or department stores - perfume very occasionally in a public toilet but never deodorant other than at home or in the changing room at the gym after a shower, and I still fail to see why that's unreasonable.

BeCool · 03/12/2014 22:52

I think it's like passive smoking - I really don't care if you want to use sprays. But I really do care about children, babies and myself having to breathe in the toxic fumes of other peoples sprays. They are invasive. Other options aren't.

I have no particular allergies or special sensitivities - I just don't want to breathe in this rubbish. And I am very sympathetic to people who do have allergies and sensitivities. It's not just asthmatic's or those with perfume allergies/sensitivities who have issues.

XP used to use sprays but he changed to roll on when I asked him to imagine what it would be like for his babies to breathe in his fumes. It makes sense.

marryj · 04/12/2014 09:30

Agree, its very similar to passive smoking. I've written a email to the local leisure centre. Let's hope they think about it. We have recently got oils banned from the sawna on similar grounds.

YANBU!! I hate sprays. I use them but I go into our toilet, spray quickly then go back into the bathroom. I can't stay where someone has sprayed. DP is still learning to not spray around me Grin

Lifesalemon · 04/12/2014 11:11

julius I think you misunderstood the department store thing. You don't have to get your perfume out in a department store, they have plenty of their own.
