I never cook with fat for health reasons and how fats can become very unhealthy when heated at high temps \ trans fats and all that. So I have an olive oil bottle on the table and we use it as a condiment. I just love it on most things. So between dh, dd and me we easily go though 1 litre a week. I thought it was a healthy habbit, fat is not the enemy and all that but my friend thinks that it sounds unhealthy.

Aibu thinking its healthy?

Oops. You're right.

The Mediterranean thing is genetics to a large degree. Limone is a great example. When I lived in Milan and used to vicit Lake Garda, I was told this great age was all down to lemons and olive oil. Of course it wasn't.

familymember · 03/12/2014 17:24

Interesting, thanks for explaining OP.

VitoCorleone · 03/12/2014 17:24

Frying in water Confused do your roast tatties are actually just boiled potatoes?

InanimateCarbonRod · 03/12/2014 17:25

It just goes to show how bad dietary advice is. Fat is good nay essential for health. Sugar and refined carbs are not. Why do you think Italians have the healthiest diet? 100 calories of fat and 100 calories of sugar are not equal. They have vastly different effects on the body. Fat won't make you fat and certainly won't give you heart disease.

Dame
I suspect a lot of people in Greece have a healthier lifestyle overall than in the UK and sunshine may well be a factor with the current research into Vit D. I wonder if the health of the population will fall if young people are moving to a less healthy way of eating - the research quoted suggests that is the case in Crete.

squoosh · 03/12/2014 17:27

chickydoo olive oil isn't always the healthiest choice for cooking with as it has a lower smoking point than other oils.

chickydoo · 03/12/2014 17:31

That's interesting squoosh, what could I use instead? Sunflower maybe? I've no idea really.

Charitygirl1 · 03/12/2014 17:32

Boggles at frying onion in water if you have olive oil to hand. That's not frying, that's steaming.

According to google there is 56 tablespoons in a litre , so if each adult had 3 on 1 meal 7 times a week that's 42, child had 2 on 1 meal 7 times a week is 14 . That's the litre used.
Still seems a lot to me, I personally would hate my food drowned in oil , but hey ho, live and let live !

shelfontheelf · 03/12/2014 17:45

I only use olive oil but 500ml lasts about four weeks!

MaidOfStars · 03/12/2014 17:50

3 tbsp of olive oil on one meal?????

SaucyJack · 03/12/2014 17:54

Sweet potato wedges are not sad (not healthy sadly) the way I cook 'em Squoosh.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 03/12/2014 17:54

LOL Tiggy !

Sorry OP, a litre a week sounds like an enormous amount. We use olive oil for all our cooking and get through a litre of oil once a quarter maybe?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 03/12/2014 17:55

It's healthy fat but it's still fat and it's masses of calories. Why not try putting a small amount in the table in a drizzler and see if you can reduce your intake that way?

Cooking with oil isn't the same as eating it raw or pouring it over your food - we generally use less when cooking and food doesn't absorb that much oil if you cook it at the right temp.

We use rape seed oil btw - heart healthy and a high smoke point.

CuttedUpPear · 03/12/2014 17:56

'Frying' onions in water?
That's soup.

SantyClaws · 03/12/2014 17:57

use rapeseed/canola oil for high temp cooking - it has a much higher smoking point and is just as good for you as olive oil, apparently

i'll confess I'm having a bit of a roffle at frying in water when you get through a whole litre of oil a week

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 03/12/2014 17:58

What kind of meals do you eat that you use that much oil as a condiment? I am wondering if it will make my chille con carne or cottage pie taste any better Grin

SpringBreaker · 03/12/2014 18:00

I would rather cook some potatoes in oil and enjoy it than drip cold oil over a soggy potato.

Life is meant too short to deny yourself any pleasure in food at all.

Buttercupsanddaisys · 03/12/2014 18:10

Better stock pile your o.oil. Failed harvests this year cos of a bug or something, price is going to rocket.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/12/2014 18:12

My mum eats it like you do OP, drizzled on everything, she's as heathy as an oxGrin

CupidStuntSurvivor · 03/12/2014 18:13

Well your insides must be slick! But if you're active enough to be burning off the calories, it probably won't do you a huge amount of harm.

Interested to see what type of meals you eat that they're all improved by olive oil though. The vast majority of my non-salad meals would be odd to pour cold oil over.

AlpacaYourThings · 03/12/2014 18:14

What is the deal with 'smoking points' never heard of this before Confused

FoxgloveFairy · 03/12/2014 18:14

I'm willing to be wrong, but isn't frying in water either broiling or boiling?
