I prefer 6.30 but DH reckons 8ish.

Bifflepants · 03/12/2014 09:13

We eat dinner about 6pm.

SavoyCabbage · 03/12/2014 09:15

I'm getting my lasagne out right now. It's 8.15pm. We eat after the dc have gone to bed.

daisychainmail · 03/12/2014 09:16

Hm ok. I think the solution is I should let my DH cook his lasagne when he gets in, but secretly have eaten another meal at 5.

OP posts:
Artandco · 03/12/2014 09:17

Daisy - about 8pm still. We eat lunch around 1pm, so I wouldn't be hungry for another meal at say 5pm

Children eat lunch same time, have a fruit snack around 4pm, then eat dinner at 8pm with us. Bed at 9pm. They are 3 and 4 years

daisychainmail · 03/12/2014 09:18

Mine (2) falls asleep at 6.30pm!!

I admire you for not being hungry between 1 and 8!! Astonishing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/12/2014 09:20

So many variables - what time does your DC go to bed? If I was eating dinner separately from mine I would want the entire bedtime routine out of the way before eating, that would have meant eating around 7.30.

daisychainmail · 03/12/2014 09:20

Ok I have been chastised. I am the freak, and should have a secret hamburger immediately after my DC falls asleep!

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/12/2014 09:23

No, not at all, it's just that there are so many variables. We're all over the place at the moment with 8 and 10 year old DCs who go to Brownies, Scouts, sports and drama clubs most nights in the 6-8 slot and a DH who walks through the door randomly between 6 and 8pm too. If I wasn't going to have dinner till 8 I would definitely need a snack around 5ish.

In your situation I would want to be eating no later than 8 and I would have a snack late afternoon when DC has their tea.

daisychainmail · 03/12/2014 09:25

Do you work Whoknows? I do, and can have a massive lunch at work. Perhaps that's part of the solution.

Bumpsadaisie · 03/12/2014 09:26

On some days we all eat together at 6pm. Other days when DH is late home, or if we want to eat just us two, it is about 9pm.

checkeredpresent · 03/12/2014 09:27

Dinner times are a mess in this house during the week. DCs eat at 5 as they're starving as soon as they arrive home after an hour's bus ride from school. DH appears when he appears anytime between 6 and 9 and he usually gets a reheated portion of whatever the dcs have had. I flit between eating with the dcs and waiting for DH. The dcs have a drink and snack around 7 before they go to bed - early as they have to get up at 5.30.

If I had a different life in a different place my ideal would be to all eat together around 6pm. Maybe one day.

Kim82 · 03/12/2014 09:29

While I'm on mat leave we have been having tea between 5pm - 6pm. When I go back to work it'll change to between 6pm - 7pm as I will only get back from work at 5.15pm, I'll have 15 mins to sit down, speak to the kids and have a brew then I'll make a start on our tea around 5.30pm.

Bumpsadaisie · 03/12/2014 09:29

...but I probably nibble (ooh, nibble is a horrid word isn't it!) some of the DCs food at 6 ish if we are going to eat late.

My children aren't both in bed till at least 8pm so by the time we have cooked after that it is at least 9pm.

Mintyy I am glad we are not the only ones that don't seem to be able to eat at a sensible time!

Artandco · 03/12/2014 09:30

What are you eating for lunch? Just a basic sandwich or an actual meal? I would have an actual meal at lunch, so I suppose that's why I'm not hungry for dinner a few hours later.

Yesterday I had : chicken (leftovers),avocado and goats cheese salad. (Various leaves/ cucumber/ tomato etc)

Day before : salmon teriyaki and rice ( ate out at work)

That's roughly lunch most days. If home basically a large salad with protein and fats, or baked potato with salad and filling, of leftover dinner from night before

BlingBubbles · 03/12/2014 09:31

We eat dinner between 7:45 -8:15. DD eats at about 5 and is in bed at 7, we eat once she is sleeping. She eats her main meal at lunch so only normally has a snack at 5.

daisychainmail · 03/12/2014 09:31

I do have a proper meal (in work canteen) but will have more.

This is all very interesting. For those that eat at 9ish, do you go to bed late? I tend to go to sleep by 10.

God, when did I turn into such a fussy old bint? I used to be happy with a badly made curry at 10pm!!

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 03/12/2014 09:32

We have dinner at 5.30 so no need for supper.

Ketchuphidestheburntbits · 03/12/2014 09:33

OP, could you compromise on 7pm instead of 6.30 or 8? Personally, I think 8 is too late to eat and digest a meal before bedtime. Like others have suggested you can have a snack later on if necessary.

daisychainmail · 03/12/2014 09:35

We can only compromise if I cook, as DH comes home at say 7 but then cooks.

OP posts:
halfdrunkcoffee · 03/12/2014 09:37

On weekdays about 8pm.

Two days a week when DH does 5:2 I est leftovers with the children at 5ish.

On weekends we eat together around 6. I don't like eating so late in the week as I end up snacking at 5pm.

R4roger · 03/12/2014 09:39

supper last night was 8.40, I remember specifically because DD was moaning about the time.
I try to be earlier but it doesnt often happen.

jay55 · 03/12/2014 09:39

About 8, I usually get in around 7 so earlier isn't possible.

Chewbecca · 03/12/2014 09:40

We have dinner together at about 615-630 (activities and other goings on permitted). I've gradually moved DS's dinner time from around 5 (we ate separately then) to this time so that we can all eat together which I muchprefer, I only cook once and we can have a chat.

It does mean I do all the cooking as DH doesn't get home until just then, if I waited for him to cook, it would be more like 8pm.

Bumpsadaisie · 03/12/2014 09:41

Daisychain we often eat at 9 on trays in front of the good TV programmes that tend to start then and go up to bed at 11, lights off probably about 11.15pm.

We get up at 6.45.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 03/12/2014 09:44

Readjust your menus so DH is cooking things that are quick - you mentioned lasagne, for eg, that takes ages, if DH comes home at 7 and starts on that there's no way you'll be eating before 830. But if DH comes home at 7 and flings a stir fry on, you'll be eating by 730 at the latest.

I work from home and I do 95% of the cooking through the week for the same reason - DH is home at variable times, by the time he gets in and gets organised we'd be eating at 10 most nights. It's sometimes a PITA as I'd like to not be in charge of it all the time, but it's one of those things I guess.
