What could be worse than not getting a single response to my post.

Several times I have had the urge to start a post, to open a new thread and even to type a line or two.... But then erased it all and skulked back to lurking.

What greater rejection could there be?

what greater rejection could there be? Are you serious? We're talking about strangers on the Internet - I can think of greater rejections.

You often see posters "bump" their threads to get replies, sometimes they just get missed. It's not a big deal.

I accept that I am a bit odd, which I guess is less bad than being unreasonable.

If you're afraid of rejection on MN, you should probably see a GP about anxiety or something similar. How are you with people face to face?

I can't tell the difference between people with genuine issues and people that are joking anymore. Have you read MN? Half the people that make ludicrous statements are being 100% serious.

MN is strange all the time sometimes, certain threads get lots of responses and I've seen really interesting discussions get ignored. It depends which people are online. I have shamelessly bumped some of my own threads if I've posted them at a time that I think might not get a lot of responses.

Also it depends on the tone of the first few posters. If the consensus at the beginning had been different then the thread could have gone completely differently iykwim.

I have posted of loads of stuff with no replies. Usually on specialist boards though. I recently asked a question on the pushchairs board and got zero replies, apart from my own 4 () bumps!
Posting on aibu will guarantee you replies. Not necessarily the ones you want though.

Of course, there's only one thing worse than no replies, and that's a single solitary reply. Which suggests that while you are possibly being unreasonable, or reasonable, you will never know for sure ...

Not getting a single response is disappointing. What's worse though is when some obtuse poster misunderstands your post, flames you for something you never said, and a load of sheep join in. Now that's infuriating

I'm never brave enough to bump my own posts. Sometimes I post and then duck in case someone deliberately misunderstands and flames.

I have received a couple of mild roasting too but am still here and have occasionally even agreed that the flamers had a point.

Here's another downer - being the last word on a thread, which means:

You're too late - the train has moved on
Everyone is bored with the topic
You have posted something so silly it is not worth responding
Your devastating wit and erudition has silenced everyone

Somehow, I doubt it's the last reason….
