to think £2600 for fitting a new boiler is probably about right?

dh is appalled because they've been here a few times recently trying to make it work and we've spent a few hundred on various other things which needed doing, valves replaced, immersion heater fixed etc.

Yesterday the engineer returned because the ignition lockout had completely locked out. He now says we can pay £400 on parts and £200 on labour and get it mended or face it, stop throwing money at it, bite the bullet, and get a new boiler. He says he could mend it and next week it could collapse again and then more money on parts and labour.

Does that sound about right?

We have no heat til next week regardless Sad
At least the immersion heater works so we are not cold and stinky.

Had ours done recently, £1400 for a A rated new boiler fitted.

poppetina · 02/12/2014 20:07

We've just had one fitted by a local plumber for £2000. British gas quoted us more than £4000 so your quote seems reasonable. We were without a boiler for nearly a week. I feel your pain.

MillionToOneChances · 02/12/2014 20:07

Vaillaint don't have the best reputation for reliability. I just had a 10 year old dead Vaillant boiler replaced with a top of the range Worcester Bosch (recommended by Which and all the plumbers who quoted) for £2800, and that was mates rates. The digistat optimiser is brilliant and well worth a bit extra, and if you live in a high limescale area you should pay for top end descalers.

Lucyccfc · 02/12/2014 20:16

Depends on the boiler they are providing.

I had mine replaced last year. Went for a Worcester Bosch, which are the best on the market and last for years and are really economical. Including the boiler, new gas pipe and the outside condenser it was £3500. Came with a 10 year guarantee.

I've been able to cancel my gas service plan with British Gas and I've saved £140 off my heating bills in the last 12 months, so was well worth opting for a decent boiler.

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 02/12/2014 20:18

Yeah ours was a Worcester Bosch too. Pricey £3700, but our plumber assured us it was worth it.

TooSpotty · 02/12/2014 20:21

We got a Worcester combi earlier this year. 1,500 including fitting. We're in London.

BikeRunSki · 02/12/2014 20:23

We got a new boiler installed 6 weeks ago. It's a Worcester Bosch boiler, fitted by one of their locally approved fitters. we also had 6 TVRs (radiator thermostat valves) and a new thermostat.

Total cost was just shy of £1900.

Previous bolier was also knackered after 15 years.

TheHatInTheCat · 02/12/2014 20:24

Mine was £900 including fitting two years ago. No idea of the make though.

museumum · 02/12/2014 20:34

We were recently quoted £3k including running the new piping and joinery to accommodate what we'd need to go from current combi to a condensing combi which is far more efficient.

Theoretician · 02/12/2014 20:41

Here's a web page quoting prices for 8 different boilers, all under £2000 installed.

SwedishEdith · 02/12/2014 20:43

Sounds about right for a decent boiler. I'm amazed at how low some of the prices are on here though.

FatimaLovesBread · 02/12/2014 20:46

It definitely depends on the boiler you get. My DBro fitted us one last year so only charged for parts, no fitting. That cost £1000 for descent but not THE best brand boiler and wireless thermostat.

Where in the country are you?

TheDetective · 02/12/2014 21:15

I was shocked with the price of mine Swedish. In fact, I thought we were going to have to live with no heating and hot water for a long time.

I figured 2-3K which would have taken forever for us to save.

I was lucky and very surprised. He was my first quote too.

wearenotinkansas · 02/12/2014 21:17

About £1600 3 years ago for Worcester Borsch. I also got £400 for exchange of our old boiler. Scottish Gas wanted to charge us about £3,500 for the same job.

troubleinstore · 02/12/2014 21:51

Just had mine replaced for £2400 after 15years in te same situation. The difference is amazing and we can really tell the new boiler is more efficient already. Bite the bullet and do it. Our new one came with an 8 year guarentee too, so not expecting any further costs for a long time.

BMW6 · 02/12/2014 21:57

We had a new boiler installed 4 months ago - cost £2110. Old boiler was not a Worcester and was 15 years old - new is Worcester and the difference is amazing!

We had got to the stage when repairing the old one was throwing good money after bad.

You got a fair deal IMO.

Caorunn · 02/12/2014 21:59

I've just been quoted 3.6k for an all singing all dancing high flow Worcester plus running a new gas pipe into the house so sounds about right to me.

Oldraver · 02/12/2014 22:08

We've just had ours replaced we got a guy from the Worcester Bosch list and it cost £2264 ish. He was one the cheapest quotes, (three similar quotes) one national company wanted Over £3000

I do know the actual cost of the boiler is £850 (inc vat)

flightywoman · 02/12/2014 22:33

We got a Wiessmann fitted a year ago after our old one kept breaking down and needing expensive repairs. It was around £2600 after a trade-in on the old one, done in 2 days and included a power flush and a replacement radiator in one room.

It runs at 98% efficiency and has already saved us in bills.

Get a couple of quotes and shop around, but you aren't far off the mark.

troubleinstore · 02/12/2014 22:39

ours was a Worcester too!

BikeRunSki · 02/12/2014 22:43

British Gas quoted us nearly £4K for what actually cost us £1900

CrabbyTheCrabster · 02/12/2014 22:49

Just had a new boiler fitted last month. Worcester Bosch combi boiler. £2300.

wobblyweebles · 03/12/2014 00:18

Mine cost £8,000 but I have a big house and it's very very cold here so I had to put in a really reliable powerful boiler, and it was replacing a completely different system. They did a few other bits of work while they were here too.

We had three plumbers in the house for three days, then they came back and finished off various other things over the next few weeks and periodically dropped off propane tanks as needed.

The lowest quote I got was about £2k less but that company has since gone out of business taking all the deposits with them.

MollyBdenum · 03/12/2014 00:31

We have just paid £2,600 to replace our old boiler with a combi boiler and wireless thermostat with a ten year warranty and have the old tank etc removed.

Collaborate · 03/12/2014 00:33

4 Years ago we paid around £1300 for a Worcester combo boiler 42 BTU (to heat a 5 bed house and run 2 showers), including re-siting the boiler from where the old one was. I'm amazed that other people pay so much. British Gas are know rip-off merchants.
