Regarding £10 plus advent calendar with presents in them?

Why would anyone buy these massively indulgent calendars? I think there's a Barbie and Lego one. Each window has a small gift. IMO presents are for Christmas Day and a small gift each day ruins the build up.
The chocolate ones are fine. I quite liked the old fashioned ones with pictures.

I used the back of a hummus label to draw a picture of a Lego advent calendar for my DC to take turns looking at, I sellotaped 23 lumps of coal to the back. (24 seemed extravagant).

happybubblebrain · 01/12/2014 22:59

Smiggle have one for 20. The contents are pretty good though, with lots of useful items including an invisible UV light pen.

VinoTime · 01/12/2014 22:59

I bought dd (7) the Frozen cosmetics calender and she was thrilled to bits opening it this morning. As was I when I opened the first door on my little Yankee Candle House. We also have a chocolate one each because my dad buys us one every year. It's not spoiling the build up to Christmas at all. What a strange thing to say. It's a tiny little thing they get each day.

I got dd's using some of my clubcard boost vouchers up - so it was free. Mine was just a blatant spoil self indulgence and my house smells yummy Grin

I made 25 stockings and hung them on a big rope. Each stocking can hold at least two Twixes.

Is that all right by you Scrooge OP?

My nan bought us a chocolate one every year, until my sister decided they didn't like the chocolate and would rather have money (gutted as I was eating their chocs too!) always miss that so have been buying myself one each year since she died. However this year I have the Selfridges one (£85Shock) and the boots no 7 one, my DP (male 31) has the frozen one which he is sharing with our 5 week old daughter! My sister has the benefit one and the body shop one! This is our first year of indulgent beauty advents and we couldn't wait to open them!

DD will be getting any advent she wants, hoping she wants the lego ones though when she is older Grin

Ds1 got a Lego Starwars one for his birthday a couple of weeks ago. The look on his face when he opened it was pure unadulterated joy Smile. I suspect the relative who bought him it will be repeating for the next few years - was an inspired present.

Our usual one is a Christmas tree with 24 felt decorations to dress it with over the month.

Bulbasaur · 02/12/2014 00:39

I'd buy those before candies that'll give your small child a morning sugar rush.

I just grew up with paper ones that had a picture and bible/song verse on the inside, and a tree one where you put an ornament on the tree each day.

supermariossister · 02/12/2014 02:45

we had playmobil post office one last year that was quite festive and they play with the figures all the time in with other playmobil, this year it's a zhu zhu hamster one as it only £3 back in august. I like them, it something different, noone forces you to buy them.

waithorse · 02/12/2014 06:31

YABU. There are plenty of things I consider indulgent. Couldn't give a shit if other people do them though. Hmm

bigbluestars · 02/12/2014 06:37

But isn't christmas indulgent? We work hard and watch our pennies all year christmas is a time to have a bit of fun and indulge.
We buy lots of things at christmas that we don't actually need, a christmas tree, special food, even in the run up too, trips to the panto, a special outfit for a party- I am even having my hair done today.
None of it strictly necessary.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 02/12/2014 06:38

Oh I would have loved the gin one . Anyway, we (I) have a lego one, so there Grin

FamiliesShareGerms · 02/12/2014 06:39

They make brilliant birthday presents for children with November birthdays

skaen · 02/12/2014 06:47

My mum buys lego or playmobil advent calendars for the children as their Christmas present. She asked the children if they wanted a proper present on Christmas Day instead and all voted to keep advent calendars.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 02/12/2014 06:55

I don't get the "I have three children so it's too much to have one each" comment. As an atheist, the best thing about Advent starting on 1st December is that 24 divides neatly by 2/3/4 so unless you've got 5 children they can take turns. We've always had one Lego calendar for the DC to share.

(Am I misremembering, or did you used to be able to get Advent Sunday to Christmas calendars? - no chocolate obvs, this was the dark ages when I was a girl).

DaisyFlowerChain · 02/12/2014 07:22

Having children is indulgent, both on finances and the impact on the environment so I don't think an advent calendar is OTT in the grand scheme of things.

People have different budgets, not everyone subscribes to the tangerine and shiny coin only for Christmas.

HamishBamish · 02/12/2014 07:29

Our 2 boys have the Lego Star Wars advent calendars. They love it and it's much better than chocolate every day. There are some extremely extravagant ones though which are £100's. Personally I wouldn't buy one of those, but each to their own!

Silverstar2 · 02/12/2014 07:47

We have a tradition here that Granny buys a picture one (no choc) and my two take it in turns to open it each day, but we have a HUGE competition every day to guess what the picture is - I know is sounds silly, but we love it, and keep a running tally of who is in the lead - if anyone! So today I guessed mistletoe, DD (age 12) guessed stocking, and DS (age 10) said pudding - but it was a bauble.

There is much cheering when someone guesses right!

A daft thing I know, but we would all much rather this than cheap chocolate, and I don't want them having that cheap chocolate first in the morning.

Works for us. But saying that, each to their own, buy what you want for your own kids.

So YABU as no-one is forcing you to buy them.

RubyGoat · 02/12/2014 07:55

You would not like ours then... we bought the presents to fill it. And spent lots of time a few nights ago figuring out which days to put them in, so DD doesn't get chocolate on nursery mornings! Grin (the chocolates were Lindt & those were the cheap days - I don't do cheap chocolate!)

Tanaqui · 02/12/2014 07:55

Lol at the idea that your standard Cadbury/ kinnerton choc advent calendar is massively indulgent or gives a huge sugar rush! Maybe indulgent if you have the hotel chocolate one, but still would be a challenge to get a rush!

I have the boots no 7 one for me and it is fab :)

UmizoomiThis · 02/12/2014 07:57

I got my DH a ginvent for the second year (also part of his presents). He's never been much into the Christmas run up excitement til he got an advent calendar.
