one of the lowest people in society? Bloke at work today boasting bout his new ps4 he brought for £200 last night. No box no cables, so obviously stolen, I said as much and he shrugged his shoulders.

I hope that the ps4 locks up when connected and he can't play it. To knowingly buy something that has been stolen is awful. It shoes a complete lack of morals. What about the person its been stolen from? Some poor kid whos parents can't afford to replace it, and aren't insured. Or even if its from a multi millionaires house its still disgusting.

Apparently my thinking is skewed because I've been burgled twice and know the devastation that it can cause, regardless of insurance status. Its not just the missing items is the trauma of having some unkown rifling through your belongings and removing your safe haven

Phone Crimestoppers. It's anonymous. Shop him for handling stolen goods.

There's loads of shop lifted stuff on our local Facebook selling pages. Disgrace but I can't prove it (some people have hinted in the comments). If there wasn't a market they wouldn't steal it cos they couldn't sell it.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 01/12/2014 21:47

He is actually laughing about it being stolen goods and buying 'from the lads'! Now he is a bit of an idiot so there is a chance that somehow he thinks that knowing the thieves and burglars that somehow this makes him a hard man by association and it's bravado and really he's been mugged off by sony like the rest of us.

Burglary really can devastate a family. One house we rented and were broken into and our landlord made it clear that as soon as he could get us out he would because we had been broken into! So not only did we lose our possessions and have personal items gone through we lost our home. We were both insured but the landlord wanted us to pay for the locks and windows which were covered on buildings insurance and not our contents insurance. The thieves crowbarred patio doors open smashing the glass and the frame completely in the process.

round here we have a steady trade of stolen meat from the local junkies

you tell them what you want and pay just under half shop price or they steal it and you then decide if you buy it or not

kittykathat · 01/12/2014 22:29

I got my purse n phone robbed from my ex friend (long story) it was devastating.
Buying stolen good from a bugerly is sad.

DoraGora · 01/12/2014 22:36

ilivechris I presume that, whoever the buyers in your story are, they know what they're doing. I wouldn't want thieves anywhere near me or my house, because their business is breaking in and stealing stuff. But, I'd imagine that some people have robbery insurance, (and not the type that comes in a policy.)

EatShitDezza · 01/12/2014 22:38

Ilove any chance you are In Yorkshire and Co-op is the place they rob from? If so I know them!

They offer me coffee

WhyYouGottaBeSoRude · 01/12/2014 22:48

Is yorkshire very small with just one Co-Op? Confused

grumpyoldgitagain · 01/12/2014 22:49

Yes

EatShitDezza · 01/12/2014 22:50

No there's. A few but there's not many meat stealers who only steal from one shop.

These certain meat theifs only do the co-op. They have their timing down to perfection

LongDistanceLove · 01/12/2014 22:55

Stealing from shops puts up the prices for everyone though as the business needs to cover the cost of goods that are stolen.

I think thieves are scum personally.

ilovechristmas1 · 01/12/2014 22:56

dont forget the block of cheese to, Smile

EatShitDezza · 01/12/2014 22:57

Hmm

Legs of lamb? And ice cream down pants?

This is why I don't buy from them. That's how they get it out of the store

WhyYouGottaBeSoRude · 01/12/2014 22:59

Grin cheesy pants

EatShitDezza · 01/12/2014 23:00

Well he does. She just puts it in her bag like its normal

Babyroobs · 01/12/2014 23:03

It always amazes me just how many people think it's fine to receive stolen propety. I was on tea break with some colleauges at work and one was talking about a 'hot ' sat nav that her son had aquired. Other people immediately started enquiring if she could get one for them ( the one enquiring most voiciferously being a policemans wife!). Another close friend was openly telling me how her dh was doing some work in a hotel and managed to aquire an expensive part for their shower, clearly it was stolen by the way she was talking , she just told me so matter of factly as if it was a normal thing to do.

YouAreBoring · 02/12/2014 00:32

YANBU - I've known a few people who are happy to receive stolen goods but wouldn't dream of actually stealing something. I find the hypocrisy really irritating.

People who buy stolen goods (regardless of whether they are from shops or homes) are no better than thieves themselves. It's scummy behaviour.

Bulbasaur · 02/12/2014 01:26

We were both insured but the landlord wanted us to pay for the locks and windows which were covered on buildings insurance and not our contents insurance.

We got broken into, and our apartment tried making us pay for the door. We refused to pay for damage we didn't cause, that was a matter for them, the police, and the insurance to figure out.

I've known a few people who are happy to receive stolen goods but wouldn't dream of actually stealing something.

Naw, they just don't want the risk of getting caught. If there was no chance of getting caught, those same people would do it in a heart beat.

Stealing from shops puts up the prices for everyone though as the business needs to cover the cost of goods that are stolen.

This is a false statement actually. Unless there is a ridiculously large number of shop lifters, stores do have both insurance and they make prices accounting for items that end up damaged or missing during shipments. Even then, stores will invest in security measures and write it off as a business expense, not hike up prices.

We lived in a rough area, actually we live in the same area, but police and community have been working on cleaning it up. Stores used to put game boys out on display in the open. Kids would come and steal them right out of the boxes. They locked them behind glass, and prices did not go up.

There is a store near us with small items that used to be in the open and they got stolen a lot. They are now behind glass. Prices did not go up.

If you as a business owner cannot account for reasonable losses in your pricing decision, you need to find a new field. The only reason prices go up is because people are willing to pay that price. You don't seriously think Frozen crap is over priced because people are stealing it do you?

Thieves shouldn't steal, but it'll never affect you personally, even if you're the store owner. Unless you're a terrible store owner.

Gullygirl · 02/12/2014 02:09

A bit off tangent, but £200 for a stolen and incomplete ps4?He's stupid as well as a criminal then.
For the equivalent of £100 more,I've just bought one which came with four games ($598AUD).Plus it has a warranty....
I used to live in the North East of England in a real run down poor area.People used to steal to order, once I had a knocvk on the dfoor asking if I wanted to buy a (stolen) door alarm.Hmm

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/12/2014 05:35

We got broken into and all my CDs were stolen. Some I've never replaced. It's a horrible feeling. I would agree that the people who buy stolen goods are worse than the people who steal them. Sad

Mrsstarlord · 02/12/2014 06:08

Buying stolen goods is lazy, selfish and cowardly no matter how you want to dress it up to try and justify it.

CrohnicallyAnxious · 02/12/2014 06:50

bulbasaur yes, shoplifted goods might be discounted as a 'business expense'. But the shop is there to make a profit, and therefore must cover the costs of all business expenses. If business expenses go up, the shop will have to adjust things including its pricing in order to keep making a profit, or it will end up closing down. It's not as simple as 'gameboys keep being stolen, therefore we'll make them more expensive to recoup costs'.

wheresthelight · 02/12/2014 09:12

I guess it really depends if it really is stolen or just bought off a local fb or ebay site and he is just talking it up to make him look cooler than he is.

stealing and dealing in stolen goods is shite but I think I guess for me the reason behind why some steals is important. if they are stealing because they are poor and need toffees their kids then that for me is mitigating circumstances. however if they are kids doing it for kicks or druggies then that is a whole different ball game

specialsubject · 02/12/2014 10:21

if you are happy to buy stolen goods, you are by definition not bothered if your stuff gets nicked. So if you are burgled, you will not be calling the police or claiming on any insurance.

the idea that stolen from a shop is ok because of nasty capitalism is the definition of entitled. Please buy a one-way ticket to a communist country.

BuzzardBird · 02/12/2014 10:21

Yeh, completely ok robbing off stores, no-one hurt? What about the poor feckin staff who have to a) deal with the shits stealing from them (aggressively in some cases) and b) the shit they get off their bosses when they have lost stock during their shift?

Thieves are scum and people who buy off thieves are as bad (just more cowardly) than they are.

I have been the 'staff' in these some of these instances and have had friends and family members threatened and had guns pointed in their faces. I was also held up by a 'man' with a machete, I still suffer from it mentally nearly 20 years later.

Report him for receiving. You might just help out some other poor buggers.

DoraGora · 02/12/2014 10:26

I used to have a flatmate who described this behaviour as being on the rob. And, according to her, everybody did it.
