AIBU?

To hate it when the film crew don't intervene in wildlife documentaries?

DH just flicked onto a David Attenborough thing. The turtle was wedged between some rocks and couldn't get free. Sad
He has now changed channel saying he can't watch any more.

I know they can't and shouldn't intervene probably. But still. Sad

Hate to burst your bubble, but a certain amount footage in wildlife docs generally is either set up, filmed in captivity, or uses tame animals.

I thought that, Alpaca. They stayed around to watch it and you could see it freezing. It was horrid. I can't believe that they didn't try to help... It made me cry :(

I haven't really got a bubble TBF. I would quite like to see a documentary minus the peril. I know it exists but don't want to actually watch it.

I can imagine that some fakery is involved too.

I saw one once where chimpanzees were hunting another type of monkey and it was horrific, the noise, the mob behaviour, I just can't watch anything like that again. The chimps reminded me of how human mobs behave, just chilling.

Sometimes I wish they would intervene, not necessarily always in wildlife documentaries, but sometimes just on a human level.

I think that nature documentaries have got bloodier over the years though. I love beasties, but I don't actually watch the doccos any longer, not even Attenborough.

I suspect that viewer demand has lead to programmes needing to constantly have peril! and drama! and tears and death and spectacular will it live or die? moments that garner press attention and compete with video games and soaps where everyone's a gangster.

I watched one years ago - a herd of elephants in a dust-storm and a mother+calf got seperated.
The mother managed to find her way back to the herd but the calf caught the scent of his mother and ran.... in the opposite direction Sad
There was a camera crew in a jeep. Hopefully they corralled this little animal as he ran to what he thought was his mum, but actually took him ever further away.

I saw one where they intervened - baby flamingos - toward the end of the breeding season the mud they live in starts to set like concrete and late babies get trapped. The program ending with flamingo calling out pitifully unable to move and then during the end credits they showed the crew with a hammer and chisel rescuing the bird as they just couldn't leave her.
Was heart rendering to watch on tv let alone actually being there and ignoring the cries.

We were on a private game reserve earlier this year in South Africa.

The rangers told us that they never intervene or help an injured animal as it is not a zoo, the animals don't get fed, so it really is survival of the fittest

That said apparently the only exception is if the animal is an endangered species

Sorry, Sparklingbrook but it was so long ago that I watched it that to don't remember if the plucky little Eskimo Curlew survived..

We could join hands and watch it together. Gulp.

I think the best thing we can do for wild animals is conserve their habitats and let them alone. And honestly, someone says something similar every time a thread like this appears, but the pov isn't an unimportant one , so I'll be the one to say it this time - there's a lot of well-meaning but muddled thinking surrounding cute televised baby elephants and trapped turtles from people whose consciences are never troubled by the living conditions and slaughter of the cows, pigs and chickens they eat on a regular basis.

Oh God, the spade on Mitch's head Sad

What do you think happened in the end of Tarka The Otter? Do you think the bubbles on the water meant he drowned Deadlock and got away, or that they drowned together?

Whimper.

Lily I think on this thread that is all irrelevant, you didn't need to be the one to say it at all.

There was that hideous article last week about massive seals raping penguins. Sounds like a horrific internet joke but is real. Scientists have filmed it four times. The footage was on the DM article, absolutely nasty and very distressing. Really shocking to see and I thought the video was going to be the scientists talking but it made me feel awful all week.

I really don't know how they didn't intervene, that wasn't natural at all.
