My mum and my sister are coming to stay with me and my daughters for Christmas. My mum phoned me yesterday all excited to say that she has saved £50 on a Morrisons savers card for us to do the Christmas shopping with.

It's so unbelievably kind of her. I didn't expect her to pay for it as I have more money than she does. But (major snobbish spoilt brat moment coming up ...) I wanted to do the Christmas shopping at Waitrose!! Grin Blush

I don't shop at Waitrose all the time or anything but it's just so nice for a treat and I've been eyeing up their Christmas stuff for a while.

Tell me I'm being massively unreasonable, ungrateful, snobby and pretentious and that Morrisons stuff will be just the same!

I know I would be massively unreasonable to say anything to my mum and must accept her gift with thanks and enthusiasm. But AIBU to feel just a little sad and regretful?? Wink

We get the veg and other fresh stuff from Morrisons and the nice bits- chocolate, alcohol etc from Ocado. Morrisons is alright. They have an excellent fruit and veg section, better than the other supermarkets IMO because it's so bloody vast! But other than that there are a lot of things they don't sell that other stores do, maybe that's just me though and I want very particular things Grin. £50 won't last two seconds though... Our christmas shop for two adults and three DC is about five times that.

Booze!

Buttercupsanddaisys · 29/11/2014 15:55

Whatever you buy, tell your mum we think she's absolutely brilliant! (Errr, I take it we all do ?) what a lovely thoughtful thing to do (smile)

Pippin8 · 29/11/2014 15:56

Think yourself lucky, my FIL gets me iceland vouchers.

simbacatlivesagain · 29/11/2014 16:45

Well I live in a small town with waitrose and morrisons. I shop at both- Morrisons for basics- pasta- cereals- drinks etc.
Waitrose for fresh food.

Morrisons veg is actually quite good- better than Sainsburys by a long way. Morrisons fish is better than Waitrose (but more basic choices) - their salmon (get a whole) is fab. Morrisons meat is on a par which a lot of Waitrose (waitrose organic beef etc is better). On Christmas Day we will have the obilgatory £80 Waitrose turkey but the beef will have come from morrisons and have been frozen for 2 weeks to get it at its best.

Our morrisons has a local cabinet with local ranges- these are the same as the 2 local delis sell

spamanderson · 29/11/2014 16:52

Get the boring stuff and booze with the morrisons and the fancy yummy stuff at waitrose?

StuntCodPiece · 29/11/2014 17:14

What would happen if you handed over the £50 card for a £1 purchase? Would you get £49 change in cash? Or would they peel one stamp off your card? Might be worth a phone call to your local store to ask. That way you'd get the cash to spend in Waitrose.

IDismyname · 29/11/2014 17:17

Just don't buy the fresh oxtail soup from Morrisons. It was inedible.

However, unless you're off the wall and serve that as a 'special' on Christmas Day, you'll be just fine with Morrisons!

manicinsomniac · 29/11/2014 17:21

haha, I will tell her she is an mn approved mum!

stunt I doubt you can do that. My mum will be with me too so I wouldn't want to hurt her feelings.

I think Morrisons Chrismas pud won the award for best pudding in recent Which taste test!!

Bumply · 29/11/2014 17:34

Morrisons have huge range of vegetables mostly under that 'fine spray to keep them fresh' thing that they do. And far cheaper than 'posher' supermarkets without compromising on quality.

Ragwort · 29/11/2014 17:37

Green - it did, I've bought one so I shall report back on Boxing day Grin

LarrytheCucumber · 29/11/2014 17:46

There are some things I find disappointing in Waitrose. It isn't the be all and end all of supermarkets by any means.

iggly2 · 29/11/2014 20:25

Do half and half. Lovely idea of your mums.

ChristmasJumperWearer · 29/11/2014 20:27

My DMum does the same, but with a Tesco card yes we shop at Waitrose too. Blush

I use Mum's card for booze. Grin

sunflower49 · 29/11/2014 20:32

Very kind of your Mum ! I'd have probably told a little lie and said 'Oh but Mum I've already ordered everything! And then we'd have gone to Morrison's and I'd have let her choose things with you mostly things she liked more than I did, and sent her home with it (food/booze/treats etc)....

Oldieandgoldie · 29/11/2014 20:40

I'd buy the luxuries from Waitrose and tell your mum you liked the lovely idea of her saving for Christmas so much, that thought you'd have a go too....with a different supermarket to take advantage of different special offers (and with a Waitrose card you get a free coffee and money off too). Smile

howrudeforme · 29/11/2014 22:10

ChippingInAutumnLover · 29/11/2014 22:37

ChippingInAutumnLover · 29/11/2014 22:38

BlackeyedSusan · 29/11/2014 23:11
