How can they do this - and he sounds confusingly just like new character johnnie. I'm going to have to stop listening - especially as the real Tom was reputedly sacked for not having gone to stage school, even though he has been working as an actor for 10+ years. What are they thinking?

Sorry to have hijacked a bit.
No, we don't have any sort of signal. We're in a valley so can only get satellite and poor broadband. A Sky Gnome used to do the trick.
Maybe PURE isn't the answer but I might ring their sales desk and see what they have to offer. Thanks though.

Have you tried putting your postcode in here, unitarian? You might find you can get some DAB programmes

www.ukdigitalradio.com/coverage/postcodesearch/

It's pretty accurate. We live in a pocket of poor reception (in a town but close to a hill) with very temperamental FM & it shows the limited number of stations we do get.

( My MIL lives on top of a hill on the edge of town & she can get everything Envy)

I tried it just now because I'm a glass half full type of person and it seems from the postcode search page that we should have good reception for the BBC Asian service and Radio 1 - which will come as a huge surprise to DD!

According to the transmitter map there's not one near us but that page alleges we are 'very likely' to receive all BBC services.
Curiouser and curiouser.....

Thanks for the tip. I will delve further while waiting for the roll-out of rural fast broadband which might happen in a decade or so!

I'm not happy about the new Tom either.

JessieMcJessie · 30/11/2014 09:00

I think that New Tom is a bit wooden and has a really non-distinctive voice, but I have to disagree that he sounds anything like Johnny-Johnny has a broad Leeds accent! (Not to mention a distinctively Northern turn of phrase, "it were right interesting Grandad" etc, and let 's not forget the classic"I stopped off on the M6 for a cup of tea and a wazz")

toldmywrath · 30/11/2014 20:33

Yanbu. Poor Tony in his sedatedness would be wondering who the jeff is this impostor? Grin
It really grated when Tom was seated at Tony's bedside & it wasn't the original sausage Baron's voice.

UterusUterusGhali · 30/11/2014 20:44

YANBU.

I like the old whiney Tom. (Well, I don't like the character.)

No reason at all to change him.

UterusUterusGhali · 30/11/2014 20:45

I like the slow-burning Evil Rob storyline too.

I love your username Boutros Uterus!

The trouble is that my thinking about NewTom goes like this:

  1. Tony will be wondering who this imposter is.
  2. Hang on, NewTony is NewTom's dad, so he'll recognise him easily.
  3. But that's real life! This is supposed to be The Archers. Two full body transplants in one family in under a year is going it a bit!
  4. Get a grip! It's only voices on the radio.

4 is of course the massed response from the rest of the family (non-listeners) if I try to articulate any of 1-3. The trouble is for me suspension of disbelief is key to being a devoted TA listener and when they do stuff like this it breaks the spell for me. Sad

Thisishowyoudisappear · 01/12/2014 07:53

I thought new Tom sounded a bit like Charlie, and so did Todd the bloke from RB or whatever it's called. I thought new Tom was in character in that he sat down by Tony's bedside and proceeded to talk about ... Tom.

I'm also enjoying the slow burn Rob story. It gave me a chance to explain to my Mum what 'gas lighting' was (around the dress for the hunt ball).

I luffs it all, I do.

TheRainInTheWoods · 01/12/2014 09:37

I agree re. the new Tom sounding like Charlie. I have to do a double take about the context of the conversation when I hear him so I know it's the right one.

I don't mind the new actor but the voice similarity is a problem for me.
