AIBU (Tesco-related) to think that hot water bottle is not a H&S issues ?

AIBU to think that 'Health & Safety' should not be ground for Tesco to refuse to sell DH a hot water bottle to help my whiplash-injured neck ? He was told that he could only purchase one from the pharmacy, which was closed. Not surprising that food shoppers are flocking to our local re-furbished Lidl, and that the (stupidly-priced @ £9) hwbs remain on display while I retire to bed with a creme egg ? :(

I agree that it's daft to sell them in chemists as I see them as bedroom items not medical supplies! I never understand why some things are only in store (dulcoease) and others in chemist (calpol). And as for how many paracetomol products - well don't get me started. I use 2 and a half bottles a week for very sick daughter (she can only tolerate strawberry flavour and GP can only prescribe orange flavour) and I am not allowed to buy more than 2 at a time. In store when I want to a of paracetomol (to stick up 2 university student dcs) I get young lad to put through till separately. It's legal. It's stupid. Apparently the rule has really reduced the number of 'impulse' suicides but it seems a bit nanny state to me.

Frozen rhubarb has worked a treat on the pain, but is now defrosted. Will now go to Lidl to find crumble mix. If we survive the lethal mix of non-refrigerated rhubarb, cooker usage & my dangerous drug combo, I hope to fill my Aldi or Accessorize hwb with French 'lambig', that other well-known remedy (found a long-dead fly in my last farm-purchased bottle). Will alternate sips with application of ibuprofen-gel soaked frozen carrots. Am now inspired to live dangerously Grin

Albert Camus would never have eaten a screemegg...

albertcamus · 28/11/2014 00:31

'There is no love of life without despair of life' would have been his response to the illogic of the refusal to sell the hwb. Having heard Albert moaning, Sartre would have countered with: 'what do you expect, going to Tesco, l'enfer c'est les autres! Eat your sweetmeat !'

Hassled

During one of my flare ups I was filling a hot water bottle from the kettle, my back went in to spasm and I ended up with something resembling a map of the world in blisters across my breasts.

But that is no reason to not sell them.

There is a great little shop near me, it sells everything you don't keep in the house but might need so you can buy single nails, hwbs plastic plates - tis good just for a nosey

Can I recommend the stick on heat patches from Wilkos? Only a quid for two and they stay hot for almost a whole day. A bargain considering that the Deep Heat and Thermacare equivalent cost about £6. No chance of being scalded and the heat lasts much longer so no need to keep getting up to refill the hot water bottles.

I just want to point out the absurdity of this!?

Ridiculous

Sounds like they are separate stock and can only be sold through pharmacy tills? A surprising number of customers refuse to understand this - I used to work in a post office attached to a supermarket and people would be trying to buy their veg etc with their stamps all the time.Hmm

Gosh, that's a bit daft. Since when did hot water bottles go from being a general household item to being pharmacy grade? Oddness.

I once went to Tesco to fulfil a prescription that I'd got from my consultant at the hospital. The pharmacist wasn't happy because I was bf'ing - she didn't want to prescribe it to me. I pointed out that I'd already had a week's supply from the hospital pharmacy but I obviously looked dubious, so she phoned the hospital to check that she could let me have my extremely important prescription. They said "of course" and she did it. While I was a little bit annoyed, I do understand why she did it - if anything had gone wrong it would have been on her head - but still...
