The whole thing is grim and contemptible.

GaryShitpeas · 28/11/2014 16:17

DS was knocked over by a shopper who didn't even acknowledge him

how vile. that happened to my little Dd last Christmas, sent flying by a fully grown man. she was only 4 at the time and she is tiny, you could knock her down with a feather. he did not even apologise, fucking cunt

usualsuspect333 · 28/11/2014 16:24

I don't blame the retailers for cashing in TBH.

I would if I owned a shop.

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 28/11/2014 16:36

I am happy - I did a lot of my Xmas shopping today and got people nicer things than they would otherwise have got, due to discounts of 30-50%.

I suspect those of you sniffing at it all being so uncouth and American are able to pay full price for things. I am happy to face the scrum and queue for hours to know I won't overspend this Xmas - I'm normally running around on Xmas eve grabbing gifts but this year I'm skint so am searching out bargains and being extra careful - today has been great for me and I'm sure many others.

Celticlass2 · 28/11/2014 16:58

Makemewarm Glad you got some bargains.Smile Nothing to do with Black Friday, but I doubled up some of my Tesco vouchers today to get a tablet.
Happy with my bargain too. Think I'm just about done with Christmas shopping now. Going to try and not spend any more. Wink

SomethingOnce · 28/11/2014 17:06

YABU, OP.

It's a highly desirable state of affairs to be brawling over consumer tat.

MoreBeta · 28/11/2014 17:08

I absolutely agree.

Since when did people in the UK celebrate 'Thanksgiving'? Honestly, it really shows how low our country has become. It is just ridiculous.

Proud to say I didn't buy a thing today.

JellyDiamonds · 28/11/2014 17:10

I'd never heard of it until last year. Sounds like a load of bollocks to me.

RufusTheReindeer · 28/11/2014 17:24

make

Everyone likes a bargain, it's the fisticuffs in the aisles that I think most people are sniffing about

SirChenjin · 28/11/2014 17:26

No make - I have to watch the pennies too. I was working today so couldn't get to the shops, but even if I had the day off I still wouldn't have joined the scrum of maddies fighting over stuff - I spend what I have and people get what I can afford.

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 28/11/2014 18:27

But I don't understand the whole 'only buy what you would have bought anyway' idea on this thread - I bought different, better things because they were reduced and therefore I could afford to! Confused If I'd avoided the shops today I would either have to pay more another day, or get less good gifts. I did buy a couple of treats for myself too, but the last time I checked, shopping wasn't a cardinal sin.

Fwiw I didn't see any pushing and shoving in the shops I was in, mostly clothes shops and department stores in Central London.

Eg I would much rather have shopped online for Gap stuff , but the discount was 50% off everything in store and the online discounts weren't as good, so yes I did get there early and make a beeline for things I wanted.

I saw lots of people delighted with their bargains and enjoying themselves - some flagging and sitting in the aisles having a drink of water, but I don't recognise the brutish behaviour mentioned on here at all.

I think it's a quite snobby attitude from many (not all) posters on here tbh. Nothing wrong with America, and nothing wrong with having a sale at a time which actually suits a lot of people - Jan sales are all well and good but not for Xmas shopping!

usualsuspect333 · 28/11/2014 18:34

I agree that the America bashing is a bit snobby.

SirChenjin · 28/11/2014 18:34

That's fine - you were obviously happy to join the crowds. There's no way that I would, esp. after seeing many of the images on the news and hearing first hand accounts of scrums - it's just stuff. Of course there is nothing wrong with America - but is the worst excesses of American consumerism linked to an American holiday in the form of Black Friday really what we want here?

usualsuspect333 · 28/11/2014 18:36

I'm happy to save money. I don't care where the idea originates from.

MissHJ · 28/11/2014 18:37

I am not too fussed about, some shoppers were crazy on the TV! I did pop into Asda this evening thou for some break and managed to find my oh's main christmas present of a PS3 game from £45 to £25 so I was quite pleased with that.

MissHJ · 28/11/2014 18:38

*bread not break!

Carrierpenguin · 28/11/2014 18:38

Yanbu, the whole thing is vile. I don't have several hundred pounds spare to buy a TV, but if I did then I wouldn't reduce myself to fighting other people, pushing, grabbling and jostling to get one. Shameful.

throckenholt · 28/11/2014 18:44

Saying we don't need to wholesale import American (or any other country's) customs is not America bashing.

And as for Halloween - it is an ancient festival, but the whole pumpkin and trick or treat thing in it's current form (recent introduction to the UK) is definitely an American product.

I think it is the spending frenzy that gets me - the Christmas (almost compulsory) splurge is bad enough, followed by the January Sales - we really don't need any more encouragement to buy stuff we more than likely don't need.

SirChenjin · 28/11/2014 18:49

I'm happy to save money too - but not if involves the kind of behaviour I see on the news or hear about. It's a god awful import.

usualsuspect333 · 28/11/2014 18:50

I think retailers, many of who are struggling, would disagree with that.

5Foot5 · 28/11/2014 18:51

DH and I had already arranged to take today off work to go and do the Christmas shopping. My heart sank when we woke up to the news on the radio talking about Black Friday and the fights and queues and so on.

However, it honestly didn't seem too bad. Busy sure, but I didn't see anyone rolling around fighting in John Lewis nor were they hurling TVs at each other in Kendal Milne. In fact, nothing to laugh at at all!

usualsuspect333 · 28/11/2014 18:52

You don't have to fight to the death to grab yourself a bargain.

SirChenjin · 28/11/2014 18:54

Are Amazon struggling? Hmm Last time I heard they were avoiding tax very nicely.
If you really want to support the struggling stores then save your money and buy from the local inde retailers - there's a day coming up for that very purpose.

usualsuspect333 · 28/11/2014 18:54

It was all very civilised when I popped into our local shopping centre.

Not a fight anywhere.
