Noisy sanitary product wrapping

AIBU to expect the manufacturers to come up with something that doesn't make it sounds as though I'm opening and packet of fucking sweets in the toilet? Blush

no , I hate it too

youareallbonkers · 26/11/2014 15:14

It would be better if they included a few sweets in the package IMO :)

butterbeerfloat · 26/11/2014 15:14

Haha this is something I always thought too, although I don't care anymore.

When I was younger I was mortified over it and recall one time trying so so carefully to open up a tampon without making it crackle, then managed to drop it and it went rolling out the cubicle to join the ladies at the sink Blush

Now I think fuck it, we all bloody use them!

hellsandwich · 26/11/2014 15:15

The toilet at work is on a corridor - lots of people traffic. I'm considering a mooncup, but wonder if the big "SUCK" it makes when changing it might be more embarrassing?

butterbeerfloat · 26/11/2014 15:15

Omg yes youareallbonkers

Bulbasaur · 26/11/2014 15:15

I'm pretty sure most women know that it's the sound of sanitary items and not your eating a baggie of chips in the toilets. Grin

I personally like playtex tampons, they just quietly pop out the top.

And of course, here's an obligatory MN mooncup post. Mooncups make no noise. Wink

hellsandwich · 26/11/2014 15:16

Well I've been using them for over 30 years and they don't seem to have improved. It still bothers me. Rather inconsiderate I think.

OP posts:
Bulbasaur · 26/11/2014 15:17

Dammit, you beat me to it hellsandwich! Grin

moxon · 26/11/2014 15:19

There is a brand that wraps in a sort of thin material that makes no noise, but tbh I have long since given up caring. We bleed. The wrapper is the least of all those issues. Smile

hellsandwich · 26/11/2014 15:19

Bulb See post above. The toilet is on a main corridor. It's not a room full of cubicles, but a single toilet (old building). Similarly embarrassing if I have a wee and a trump accidentally comes out.

Mammanat222 · 26/11/2014 15:20

Yep, a massive annoyance!

I always feel so self conscious, which is ludicrous as I am a 34 year old woman FFS!

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 26/11/2014 15:23

This was something that worried me greatly when I was a teenager. I used to wait until someone flushed the chain and quickly ripped the packaging open while the noise from the flush was going.

Bulbasaur · 26/11/2014 15:23

Maybe I'm being daft, but... if it's just a bathroom with no cubicles, are you sure people can hear you? Or even something so soft as a wrapper noise?

I think if people are listening to your bathroom noises, you have bigger problems than the noises you make. Wink

HouseBaelish · 26/11/2014 15:23

But, but at least if you're taking time and there's a tell tale rustle it stops people thinking you're having a poo Grin

I like Lilets. Awesome and such soft wrapping.

IAmAPaleontologist · 26/11/2014 15:25

I use cloth when not using a cup. No rustling. I ordered some new ones that arrived today and there were sweets in the box Grin.

Unless your period is heavy then you would probably find you don't have to empty a cup at work anyway so no sucking issues. Besides which if you break the seal correctly then it doens't happen anyway.

BertieBotts · 26/11/2014 15:28

The mooncup isn't that loud at all. It's completely obvious if you hear someone changing a pad/tampon but I think you'd be hard pressed to hear a mooncup noise.

I think in that kind of setup it's actually harder to hear what's happening inside the toilet because people are making noise/concentrating on whatever they are doing as they walk past. Is there an extractor fan? All the places I've worked where there is a single toilet have had an extractor fan which is pretty noisy.

hellsandwich · 26/11/2014 15:28

Well I've heard people in the men's loo when I've passed it, and they have the same set up as the ladies, so assume people can hear it. I know I shouldn't care, but - well - I do and I think it's the manufacturers' fault!

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 26/11/2014 15:29

Oh that's a point, the lillets pad wrappings are quiet.

That made me giggle OP! Every month, "rrrrrrip!" to take the old one off and "rustlefustle" to unpackage the new one. I don't mind unless there are young women/girls in the public toilet as they can be prone to shock and amusement by these things.

Poolomoomon · 26/11/2014 15:37

I've always thought this too! I'm usually lucky enough that the toilet is completely empty when I change it or someone is using the hand drier so it masks the noise Grin. I do pull it as slowly as possible to make as little noise as possible though. It's silly really, we all use them!

Selks · 26/11/2014 15:55

Why be self conscious about this though? Seriously, it's a non-issue, surely.

hellsandwich · 26/11/2014 16:00

Selks - I don't know. I'm trying to think of something comparable so as to justify it. Um.

AWombWithoutAFoof · 26/11/2014 16:03

Surely the solution is to wrap your sanitary goods in cling film every morning. You can then be thrifty and take it home again to use for tomorrow's butties.

hellsandwich · 26/11/2014 16:07
