I am not the type to scare easily, however I am due to go with DD and DM on the train to London, go on tubes and christmas shopping on Saturday.

I am a bit freaked out, as the police have been handing out leaflets at train stations giving instructions on what to do in a terror attack. Surely if the police feel this necessary then there is a real threat?

So AIBU to cancel going? I keep having flashes of DH and dd2 sat at home with no wife / mother.. and then flashes of DD1 in a huge city in the middle of a terrorist attack. I am being nuts aren't I?

YANBU.I don't want to go to the Trafford Centre this weekend.I just feel uneasy. I know I'm statistically at more risk in my car but it doesn't help.

UncleT · 26/11/2014 15:28

Of course there's a real threat for goodness' sake, the national threat level has been at 'severe' for ages, as widely reported in the media. These things aren't a joke, you know. Only a couple of days ago the Home Secretary detailed how at least forty serious plots have been foiled since 7/7. Having said that though, cancelling your plans is the same as giving in to it - don't do that. Enjoy your trip, exercise a bit of general vigilance and get on with life.

I am not as mad as the end is nigh folk..

I am realising the crowds may be an issue, pay day weekend. The one day of the year must buy everything in sight panic with probably make it less enjoyable.

Reconsidering a trip to a big shopping centre instead

Its anti terrorism week - raising awareness, telling people what to look for etc
Our police force has been handing stuff out, had special road shows etc.
I don't think it's a heightened risk... Just a national thing.
There are always announcements in stations saying don't leave your stuff unattended it maybe destroyed.

TheIronGnome · 26/11/2014 15:47

Don't cancel your trip! A shopping centre won't be anywhere near as good and winter wonderland is incredible- I'm going there on Sunday and shopping in town on Saturday.

This is no new news, don't let it spoil your plans.

Where are you op? The Centre Milton Keynes has a lovely shopping centre with grotto, market and ice rink if you do decide to change.

I would be more put of by the crowds than the threat of terrorists tbh.

LegoAdventCalendar · 26/11/2014 15:53

A far more likely occurrence would be a deadly car smash.

No skating this year but www.thecentremk.com/events/christmas

you cannot live your life scared of this. i live in london you can get killed on your street or die in a fire you know things happen dont live your life in a bubble because of fear

Welshwabbit · 26/11/2014 16:02

I live in London and travel to work on the tube every day. Haven't seen any leaflets. The threat level has not changed, so far as I am aware.

I expect it will be busy in the shopping areas on Saturday, but not as bad as it gets right close to Christmas (when I am generally running around like a blue-arsed fly doing my shopping close to the wire!). This year I have a baby due on 1 Jan so am trying to get it all done online. If you are getting an early train you will probably miss the worst of the crowds; Oxford St opens at 10 and I find that if I can get in and out before 12 then even on the busiest days, it's not too bad.

Ir1na · 26/11/2014 16:21

Trains could crash anytime, you wouldn't decide to never go! If people didn't do things because of what might happen, no-one would ever do anything. Smile
In the fairly unlikely event it did happen, your family might all survive it and there would be loads of emergency services about and station staff with plans for this kind of thing, so you wouldn't be walking around not knowing what to do for long.

limitedperiodonly · 26/11/2014 16:23

You should make your trip on Monday to Wednesday daytime - avoiding lunch hours between about 12.30pm - 2.30pm.

Not because Isis is going to behead us, but because the staff would have so much more time to help you.

Merry Christmas OP

And yes I am very very scared of future wars, civil unrest, pandemics etc but as long as me & my family are okay and the transport is still running, I wouldn't cancel plans except I was too busy either protesting against or helping with whatever it was! Blush
