to think manufacturers should make it absolutely clear on the packaging

If they have decided to make their products smell of Old People's Home Air Freshener?

DS1 is 20wks and my period decided to make it's return while we were away at the PiLs. So I nipped into Boots to grab some towels and tampons having not thought to pack any (too busy trying not to forget any random but vital baby items). Thought I had selected a standard pack and tucked my purchase in the bottom of the pram. Got suspicious when I retrieved them and the stink became obvious as I got to the bathroom to sort myself out. Sure enough in tiny writing on the front there is a 'deo fresh' logo.

Fortunately we are home now so the rest of the pack can go in the bin but AIBU to think they should make it clearer these now come with added pointless and foul stench? As the whole section of shop now stinks its not instantly clear when you pick the packet up

But of course Essence of Cheap Air Fresher is nicer and less offensive than smell of clean fange (said no man or woman ever).

But they're not going on a clean fanny, are they? They're going on one covered in menstrual blood.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/11/2014 22:48

But I don't notice any smell! Of either scent. Confused

But if other people do, like someone I'm working with or one of the teachers or anyone, if rather it wasn't bodily odour, that's all. I don't like sweat or bad breath either. And I'm sure they're perfectly natural too.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/11/2014 22:49

*I'd rather

Wolfiefan · 24/11/2014 22:52

I think the manufacturers might struggle to market the truth:
"Thrush In A Box!"
I can see why they decided to go with fresh fanjo!

kali110 · 24/11/2014 22:56

Don't know how people can actually smell them that much through clothing!
Yes id rather smell vaguely flowery rather than menstrual blood.
I'v used loads of varieties and they've never given me thrush.

goodasitgets · 24/11/2014 23:11

I can't smell menstrual blood. Tbh if I stuck my nose in my mooncup it would smell vaguely metallic. It doesn't stink or need covering up

NormaStits · 25/11/2014 00:55

They just advertise the fact that you're on the blob. Wafting the stench around.

I never sit next to someone and think 'ew you smell of period'. If I did, I'd assume they weren't washing often enough, not wish them to make it worse by adding granny floral stink on top of it.

NeedABumChangeNotANameChange · 25/11/2014 02:15

I can smell them when other women are using them. It is a distinct smell and I always feel slightly sorry for the poor woman who is walking around reeking of perfume sanitary towel.

They are awful. And I too keep buying them by accidentAngry

Morrigu · 25/11/2014 07:34

How is one covered in menstrual blood not clean?

If you're changing your sanitary protection often enough and giving your bits a quick wipe down with water you shouldnt smell of anything imo.

They do give me thrush but then so does any Always brand, even the non scented and certain condoms. I've obviously quite a delicate fanjo Grin

TheCowThatLaughs · 25/11/2014 08:00

It was a revelation to me when I start using a mooncup that menstrual blood doesn't "stink" at all. In fact it hardly smells of anything. Imo, it's only when it's absorbed by towels and tampons that it smells unpleasant

fieldfare · 25/11/2014 08:14

It's not just me! Hurrah. Have just had a small rant at the pharmacy lady while buying fluoxetine that I need because of perfumed tampons! Ridiculous things, and the 'scented' bit is barely noticeable.
YY to being able to smell them on other people, and also to not being able to smell period blood.

fieldfare · 25/11/2014 08:15

I say barely noticeable - I mean the writing on the packet. The stench is very noticeable!

Bolshybookworm · 25/11/2014 08:18

You all need to try Natracare, ladies!
No perfume and no plastic (Always felt like wearing a plastic nappy to me). You can buy them at waitrose and health food shops.
I'm not normally a knit your own yoghurt type, but I can't go back to normal towels and tampons now, they are so thrushyuncomfortable .

Citrasun · 25/11/2014 08:41

Oh I was ranting about this to my DH the other day. I'd bought some pads with my online grocery shop & had specifically tried to buy ones without scent (which it seems is becoming much harder to do). The pads were obviously not clearly labelled, as they are most definitely scented.

I wore one and spent about half an hour with a back ground niggle of 'why can I smell toilet cleaner' as I pottered around the house, before I realised what the awful smell was.

Why would anyone prefer to smell of toilet cleaner than a mild metallic smell!

MonstrousRatbag · 25/11/2014 12:41

Exactly, Morrigu, thank you.
