Following on from the thread about children's tv programmes from our youth, it got me thinking about the books I used to love that unnerved me. Several of them got made into tv programmes but loads didn't. In particular I remember The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner where all the ramblers in the countryside are baddies! And A Parcel of Patterns about the plague. Anyone got any more?

Did no-one mention Thr Giant under the Snow? With its evil warlord and terrifying skinny Leather Men?

Everything by Nicholas Fisk was scary.

No-one has yet mentioned the ugly-wuglies in The Enchanted Castle by E.Nesbit.

I was always scared by those WW2/post-WW2 books like The Endless Steppe or The Silver Sword where war comes and a family loses everything and gets imprisoned or exiled or has to run away. Then last year I read Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepytys which describes the same period of history as The Endless Steppe and realised that the Endless Steppe is probably quite sanitised compared with what actually happened.
