To think I'm NOT a fussy eater?

loveareadingthanks · 20/11/2014 12:41

I used to be a terribly fussy eater.

I don't think I am any more. DP and his family roll eyes and think I'm dreadfully fussy. I wouldn't describe myself as a fussy eater at all (maybe because I'm comparing to how I used to be). What do you think?

I don't eat
sprouts (I like every other veg)
custard
big lumps of offal (so no to plate of fried kidneys but can eat a few in steak and kidney pie, no to actual liver but like pate, no to hearts, tripe, other wobbly bits)
shellfish/seafood. (I eat normal fish but not anything in a shell/prawns/squid.)

I also don't like red wine or beer.

Is this enough to make me a 'fussy eater'?
Where do you draw the line?

CarbeDiem · 20/11/2014 13:17

I'd say you were a bit fussy but not to an extent that would really make people complain.
I call myself fussy - I have issues with most meat, absolutely won't eat offal - It knocks me sick cooking it for the Ddog.

Won't eat most soft or mild cheeses - I'm a cheddar girl and like it strong so if it's just bland it's so not worth the calories unless I can really taste it :)

Fruit, veg, seasoning, herbs - I like almost all with the exception of olives and dill. There'll be a few more that I can't think of.

ptumbi · 20/11/2014 13:21

So - if you absolutely had nothing else, like in a war or something, and all you could get were offal, and sprouts, and seafood, would you eat it? Or go hungry?

I think most people in the UK just generally 'dislike' stuff, becasue there is so much else available that they do eat ( in ds case, crisps and biscuits Angry)

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 20/11/2014 13:21

Fussiness comes from how easy it is to make you a meal you like out of whatever the commentator's normal repertoire is tbh, so... it depends.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 20/11/2014 13:23

There is a big difference between not liking a food and calling other people's attention to the fact.

If, as an adult you are pointing out you don't like something on your plate then you're not only a fussy eater but you are also a bit annoying and child-like.

If you're asking in an attention seeking manner not to be given certain things then that is also a bit annoying.

I don't like a few things. When I'm eating with others and my food arrives on a plate already dished up I would never make an issue about it. I'd just leave the thing I didn't like.

As all adults should.

Chippednailvarnish · 20/11/2014 13:24

Sorry but you sound fussy to me.

Pyjamaface · 20/11/2014 13:27

No way are you a fussy eater.

I am fussy but my fussiness is only allowed free rein in my own house. If I am a guest I will eat things I normally wouldn't except my absolute no go's

  • any meat apart from chicken breast and beef mince (in lasagne, cottage pie etc)
  • fish/shellfish
-offal.

I never ask for anything special to be prepared, just have the veg and I'm perfectly happy.

My true fussy list would make you weep Grin

Ilisten2thesoundofdrums · 20/11/2014 13:32

I wouldn't think of myself as particularly fussy but I won' eat

Sprouts
Cucumber
Melon
Bananas
ketchup
Parsnip
Radish
Beetroot

and am not keen on pepper celery nor large amounts of offal - though steak and kidney pie and pate are fine.

Does that make me fussy? According to MIL yes!
However it pales into comparison with DS's allergies plus he won't eat a lot of the above either (except for living on Ketchup Grin)

getdownshep · 20/11/2014 13:32

Nope not fussy.
I hate offal, sprouts, blue cheese, anything wrapped in suet, seafood like welks or mussels but love prawns and salmon.
Also hate pate, smells like dog food to me.
Hate beetroot and apricots as they have a funny texture.
My dh and dc love all of the above so do consider me fussyGrin

StatisticallyChallenged · 20/11/2014 14:12

I wouldn't say that's fussy. And I think the no lumps of offal is totally understandable, on it's own the flavour and texture are obvious where as it is more disguised in a pie, under gravy, mixed with steak and pastry!

hazelnutlatte · 20/11/2014 14:14

Doesn't sound fussy to me! My BIL is fussy, he won't eat
Pasta
Any meal without meat
Any meat without 4 legs on a Sunday
Any herbs or spices
Anything 'foreign'
Any fruit
Any veg other than potato, carrot, peas.

I do not consider myself fussy, but I don't like

Raw fish
Offal
Cucumber
Coleslaw
Egg mayo (will eat both eggs and mayonnaise but not together)
Salad cream
Pork pies (specifically the jelly, yuck)

So at a picnic / salad buffet type of meal prob would come across as fussy tbf, but any other occasion I'd be fine!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 20/11/2014 14:18

Fussy is so subjective though. I have a DF who won't eat onions, leeks or peppers - now that's fussy to me because it turns out 90% of the things I cook have onions, leeks or peppers in them (who knew?).

But I don't think OP sounds fussy because I only eat sprouts at Christmas, rarely have pudding (so no custard), don't eat a lot of offal and while we do eat a lot of fish it's too expensive to do a bit plate of shells for guests. So I could feed OP easily, therefore OP is not fussy!

OneSkinnyChip · 20/11/2014 14:18

You are not at all fussy. You have a few legitimate dislikes, as we all do. Very few people I know eat offal unless it is disguised in pies etc.

Your dislikes are easy to accommodate, unlike people disliking very generic things like tomatoes, garlic, onions etc. Nothing wrong with disliking those things but can make it harder to cater for them as they are in so many sauces. I can't imagine people saying, 'Shit, reading is coming for dinner, I'll have to do without my prawn, kidney and sprout casserole tonight.'

slithytove · 20/11/2014 14:28

Oh yes, also won't eat

Pate
Olives
Blue cheese
German sausage
French mustard
Radish
Aniseed and anything with that flavour e.g. Fennel

I'm pretty sure I can still be cooked for therefore not fussy Grin

ptumbi · 20/11/2014 14:34

Gerrman sausage, slithy? Ordinary ones ok?

No French mustard, but german mustard ok?
Grin

TheQuibbler · 20/11/2014 15:06

You don't sound at all fussy to me, but then I get accused of being a super fussy eater by my in laws, so maybe I am just sympathetic! :)

I won't eat:

White sauce - cannot abide bechamel sauce
Rhubarb
Custard
Any kind of cooked chocolate like a pudding or cake or anything chocolate flavoured. At all.
Cauliflower
Tomatoes unless cooked and puréed and in a sauce
Eggs - the thought of a boiled egg makes me retch
Tongue or kidneys
Can I just reiterate eggs
Aubergine a

Quite a lot of other stuff too. Truthfully, I am quite fussy but I never make a fuss if you see what I mean. And just eat what I can. I never ask anyone to make any allowances to my food preferences.

confusedalways · 20/11/2014 15:19

I think a fussy eater is someone who would refuse to eat it if cooked at someone's house. There's plenty of things I don't choose or cook for myself as I'm not keen. But I would definitely make a big effort to eat most if presented it by someone.

anyoldname76 · 20/11/2014 15:28

People that I work with think I'm a fussy eater as I don't like

Dried fruit
Sweet and savoury together
Fruit sauces
Cauliflower
Sprouts
Cheese sauce
Sweet potato
Alcohol in any food
Doughnuts with jam in
Most shellfish
Strong cheese

I don't think I'm fussy though Smile

anyoldname76 · 20/11/2014 15:34

I also forgot pork pies, scotch eggs and salad cream Grin

skylark2 · 20/11/2014 15:35

There are families where the mindset is that if you don't leave a clear plate regardless of what you are given, you're a fussy eater.

I grew up in one of those. There's not much I won't eat - warm custard (I can't stand the smell of hot milk), fatty meat unless it's crisp (though I'll cheerfully cut fat off and eat the meat around it) and really smooth, almost runny mashed potato (the consistency makes me heave, I'm fine with fluffy mashed potato), slimy shellfish (prawns and lobster are fine). My family think I'm really fussy.

My personal line would be that you're fussy if you check the menu before you go into a restaurant because you're worried there might not be anything you'll eat.

slithytove · 20/11/2014 15:39

Ordinary sausage (to a point, no fruit or veg in MY sausages thank you very much pork and apple aficionados!) and American mustard fine, never tried German mustard. Grin

Also don't like salad cream, brown sauce, or non Heinz ketchup. Don't like kidney beans. No aubergine, and dislike most chocolate cakes. I'm not fussy honest

xalyssx · 20/11/2014 15:41

I don't eat lamb, veal or raw onion, and I'm not keen on boiled carrots or chicken.

Summerisle1 · 20/11/2014 15:45

I tend to class fussy eaters as people whose range of dislikes go way beyond reasonable and who make a great deal of palaver about what they don't eat.

Like the new partner of a friend who came to dinner once. We'd been told he was vegetarian which caused no problems at all but when he arrived he positively glowed with horror at everything on offer. We were supposed to know (without the assistance of a crystal ball) he couldn't eat anything green. Or anything with beans and pulses. Or rice. Or pasta. Or anything that might have been shown a tomato. Naturally, he couldn't find anything to eat for pudding either since he had a horror of anything red in a pudding. And fruit. And cheese.

naty1 · 20/11/2014 15:55

I guess im fussy then for cgecking menu
In almost all posts something i dont like/ eat but its easier to cook for as theyre obscure not staples like pasta or tomato or onion

Some seafood
Raw fish
Offal
Lamb
Rabbit
Strong cheese and cheese sandwich
Gravy
Custard
Choc sauce
Xmas pud
Xmas cake
Not keen on nuts
Meat on the bone
Radish

Some is stuff like consistency/sogginess/skin

But i think its better thanbeing fussy about main fruit and veg as it doesnt affect my health.
Friend doesnt do garlic, onion, curry, strong flavours and that affects what we can have.
DH doesnt like brocolli or cauliflower which i like.
I think 2 fussy eaters together creates a problem as you cant have what you would eat cos they dislike it and vice versa

Sarkymare · 20/11/2014 16:45

Ha! DP and his family also think i'm dreadfully fussy.

I dont like:

Eggs
Fish (unless cod and it must be battered or breaded)
Sprouts
Offal
Baked beans
Tomatoes (reduced into a sauce is fine)
Mushrooms

I can't think of any more right now but I'm sure there is more.

DP just can't understand how I don't like fish. I don't like the fishy taste, the flaky texture or the smell. He just looks at me like I am mad.

Mrsgrumble · 20/11/2014 16:53

You are not fussy IMO

Dh is particular

No tomatoes, eggs, cheese, white sauce or any kind of sauce unless its pesto or sweet chilli. Ham, gammon. Doesn't drink alcohol, eat crisps and obviously all types of quiche, pizza, lasagne is out

Here was me wondering why I get bored of dinner ideas
