Just poped round a friends for brunch, yum I thought when she had made a salad.

I don't want to sound ungrateful but the tomatoes were just basically red cold tasteless mush. Aibu to think there is no point of a Greek salad without decent tomatoes?

What's a 'sophisticated pallet'. Is it something they use in middle class builders yards and warehouses?

Esmum07 · 20/11/2014 13:44

I feel a song coming on...

You say Kalamata, I say Kamalarta
Kalamata...Kamalarta
Kalamata...Kamalarta
Let's call the whole thing off.

Sorry, had to be done!

youareallbonkers · 20/11/2014 13:45

Who eats salad in November ?
Btw I use value tomatoes in a tomato salad and with dressing, onions and herbs it's delicious

youareallbonkers · 20/11/2014 13:46

Surely there is no lettuce in Greek salad?

mshanj · 20/11/2014 13:48

Ffs lettuce in a Greek salad?!?!

Was lovely basil obviously

TalkinPeace · 20/11/2014 13:49

sorry, the last version I had was in NYC - it had lettuce underneath

specialsubject · 20/11/2014 13:53

if this is the UK you cannot buy tomatoes that taste of anything at any time. The only way to get tasty tomatoes is to grow your own.

reason is that we are all deemed to be so stupid that we buy veg for appearance and all looking the same. So you can't get things that look a bit funny but actually taste of anything. This policy also means enormous amounts of waste.

and obviously even home grown tomatoes won't be around in November!

shaska · 20/11/2014 13:53

Well I do hope it was greek basil

JugglingFromHereToThere · 20/11/2014 13:54

I just googled Greek salad images - as well as having lovely memories of lunch on the terrace next to the sea in Greece - and I'm sure a Greek salad can have lettuce in. Lots of cucumber and tomato too of course Smile
Hungry now!

whois · 20/11/2014 13:55

If the correct quantities of salt pepper oil and vinegar are used then the tomatoes will still taste yummy :-)

Summerisle1 · 20/11/2014 14:00

There's a perfectly simple solution. Decline all future invitations on the grounds that her offerings are utterly second-rate. I'm sure she'll be entirely understanding. In fact, she may be absolutely contrite. But I wouldn't bet on it. Still, who needs these entirely unsatisfactory friends? I'm sure there's not enough room for them on the patch of moral high ground you are currently attempting to occupy.

run2 · 20/11/2014 14:14

How the two of you have maintained a friendship upon such shaky scaffolding is beyond me...

SuburbanRhonda · 20/11/2014 14:26

Oh, OP, my heart sank when you wrote "kamalarta".

You have brought this flaming on yourself, I'm afraid.

ouryve · 20/11/2014 14:35

Pallets so sophisticated that they drink wine with their plum tomatoes

StillSquirrelling · 20/11/2014 14:36

Was lovely basil obviously

Phew! At least the bloody basil was up to scratch!

Hoppinggreen · 20/11/2014 14:39

Generic olives?????
Dear God, you should have spat them into your friends face, the Bitch!

TheNewSchmoo · 20/11/2014 14:49

Ah wish there was a like button hopping. I spat my tea out at that

popcornpaws · 20/11/2014 16:41

Always buy the most expensive tomatoes you can and never chill them.

WilburIsSomePig · 20/11/2014 18:18

You obviously don't like your 'friend' very much. If this thread is for real of course...

TeaandHobnobs · 20/11/2014 18:25

The best tomatoes I've found are actually the Tesco salad tomatoes that come in a little net bag. So decent tomatoes needn't be the finest/taste the difference range...

Flingmoo · 20/11/2014 18:58

No, Summerisle the solution is for OP to bring her own premium vine ripened tomatoes and Kalamalatalalamatamamalata olives next time and casually plop them into the salad as it's being prepared - "Terribly sorry daahling, but I can't be doing with these watery proletariat so-called tomatoes, so if you don't mind I'll just chuck in a few of these lovelies from Waitrose and we'll have a decent Greek salad. There, much better."

Summerisle1 · 20/11/2014 19:01

Yes, indeed Mamushka. Your suggestion clearly has the benefit of showing this Inadequate Hostess, the error of her ways in a practical manner. I'm sure she will be truly grateful and never make the mistake of throwing an unbearably proletarian salad together again.

paintedfences · 20/11/2014 19:18

It's november. Not prime tomato-weather, really, is it?

TalkinPeace · 20/11/2014 19:40

I still have home grown tomatoes in my polytunnel in Hampshire

TheLovelyBoots · 20/11/2014 19:47

Actually, I agree with you OP. The vine-ripened tomatoes currently in the shops are still salad-ready.
