Dp has installed an ad blocker on our machines. Aibu thinking this is highly unethical? The app he installed has been banned by Google on the google play app store!

I hate ads on the internet. They are intrusive and unnecessary. I skip them on tv too and I have adblocker on all my computers. I don't have any ethical or other problems with it. YABVU

OP, you can edit the default settings so that adverts do appear on certain sites.

Or you can have the default setting so that you cherry pick which sites don't show ads.

I've done the latter on my Adblock Plus, as most of the sites I visit, e.g. beauty blogs, have very carefully selected adverts that I've clicked through on a number of occasions. I have blocked ads on larger sites and any sites which have motherfucking Flash adverts or videos that start playing if your mouse arrow rolls over them.

I couldn't bear to be with out Adblock pro on my laptop. I recently got an iPad though and can't find a suitable app.

Bunbaker · 20/11/2014 18:16

We have Adblock Plus on all of our computers. Adverts are intrusive and annoying.

Cornettoninja · 20/11/2014 18:16

There are some sites I'll happily use an ad blocker on because they're absolutely saturated and unusable imho.

Generally though I don't have an issue with the concept of advertising through websites or tracking. Internet content is pretty much free at the moment, and a lot of that is because people make their money from the existence of their audience rather than charging the audience directly. I definitely have a preference for that model.

ineedabodytransplant · 21/11/2014 15:00

Just be careful how you set the ad blockers.

I couldn't see anything on Mumsnet because I had the settings 'too high' Blush

Snatchoo · 21/11/2014 15:04

I down loaded my adblocker from the google play store Confused no I don't think it's unethical.

Topseyt · 21/11/2014 16:49

Unethical???!!! Why?

Do you work for one of these companies that advertises via the internet in this way or something like that?

I lurrrve my adblocker. Best thing since sliced bread. Very sensible to have one, unless you want to be bombarded by shite anywhere you go online.

Oh, and yes, Google along with many other sites (Amazon etc.) does record where you have been and what you have browsed online. That is why so many of the ads you see may relate to things you have viewed. I believe the term is "tracking cookies" and my antivirus is always removing them during a system scan. Some of them may introduce viruses and other spyware too. Now THAT is unethical.

EatingMyWords · 21/11/2014 16:53

Google run chrome don't they? They have an adblocker add on you can install so it's just not their own ad blockers they approve of! I hate ads.

rusticwomble · 21/11/2014 16:54

I have AdBlocker and its great. I also have Avast! antivirus which alerts me to bad sites, pop ups trying to get through, and sites that have not been active for some time (could be lurking nasties attached onto them by now)

Andrewofgg · 21/11/2014 16:55

Doing something that Google doesn't like is hardly unethical

Doing something that Google doesn't like ought to be bloody compulsory.
