To prefer to fake it every time...

Christmas trees of course Grin I honestly don't get the need for a real tree. Yes they smell nice but why cut down a living thing that's taken years to grow just for decoration because I never have fresh flowers lol

Real trees seem all spindly and a bit weird, not like my lovely bushy fake tree complete with pine cones and berries. And even get me started on the hassle of getting rid of a real tree in January.

So over to you - are you a faker and proud or AIBU?

Although for all you fakers....I saw this tree for sale outside my local Tesco and I did muse that it looked pretty realistic. I thought it very pretty. Good for small spaces too.

here

It looks better in rl than the photo.

Hurr1cane · 18/11/2014 10:27

Buying real trees is more environmentally friendly apparently.

But I have a fake one that I've had for years because I only have it up Christmas Eve and Christmas Day anyway.

Wonderous · 18/11/2014 10:27

But the smell of a real tree! The lovely piney smell! No scented candle or plugin can every replace that.

Ladyfoxglove · 18/11/2014 10:32

Don't you love the whole ritual of going to the wood/forest (Cannock Chase in my case) to get it. The choosing, the atmosphere, getting it home and dressing it, keeping it alive, the beautiful smell and just the fact that you have a living thing in your house? I think real Christmas trees are all part of Christmas. Disposal is minor compared to the joy of having one.

RedToothBrush · 18/11/2014 10:47

I go au naturel but I have to be fair to the fakers they do get better every year.

But yes its the ritual of getting the tree that I love too. We have somewhere special that does amazing trees every year.

Wonderous · 18/11/2014 10:49

But its generally not a living thing. Is it. It's a dying thing Sad

Wonderous, as fake trees go that does look nice and I might buy one for the hall when they are reduced to pennies in a few weeks

Getting a real one 'makes' Christmas for me. Yes the needles drop but it's only a few minutes to hoover them up.

angeltreats · 18/11/2014 11:22

I would love a real tree. Unfortunately we have a cat who eats any sort of greenery and the one year we did have a real tree, she munched on it constantly and we worried about her getting the sharp needles stuck in her throat. So we have a decent fake tree - This one from John Lewis.

I love the smell of real trees though. Mmmm pine. I wonder if there's a fragrance oil I could burn that would smell like the real thing.

ILovePud · 18/11/2014 11:27

I just love the tradition of going out and buying the tree and the lovely smell.

Stormingateacup · 18/11/2014 11:34

I hate fake christmas trees. If you look at it objectively, how ridiculous to have a piece of plastic, probably manufactured in a Chinese sweatshop, made and designed specifically to look like something that grows naturally in nature. Us humans have totally lost touch with our planet!

Clarabell33 · 18/11/2014 12:01

I always had a cheap fake tree until last year when I got my first real one. It was nice - a bit scraggly and not particularly fragrant, and my kitten thought it was her new toy/toilet, but generally a nice enough experience, probably worth repeating.

Until May, when the dead tree was still lying in the back garden waiting to be sawn up to put in our brown bin as the binmen refused to take it whole. And June, and indeed July, when I finally went out with a kitchen knife and DH reluctantly gave in and came to help. We do own a saw, apparently, but it's buried somewhere in the depths of the garage where I couldn't find it, and DH kept putting it off... So fake for me too Smile

outtahell · 18/11/2014 12:04

I think Xmas trees are best if they're either fake or real but still alive.

foolonthehill · 18/11/2014 15:54

muses on a fake alive tree.......

of course if you already have a fake tree and want to be green then you should never ever replace or bin it.....leave it to your child(ren) in your will with a clause to keep it going!!!

DangerousBeanz · 18/11/2014 16:03

I have a real one in the front room and a fake one in the dining room. My fake one was given to me by a friend who was throwing it out and we've had it 4 years now. It looks lovely sitting in the bay window.

I do love the smell of my real one though, and after we are done with it DH saws it up and stacks it in the garden as a bug den. DD loves rolling the logs over in the summer to see what's living underneath it.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 18/11/2014 16:08

Nice to see its much of a muchness environmentally

I bloody love having a great big real tree in my living room - I love the smell and I love the weirdness of it. I don't really have an opinion on plastic trees (we had them for years as a child due to living in Nigeria) and I hated having a real tree when I had a carpeted living room - now our whole house is wood floors so pine needles aren't a problem

Not so excited about the cat/tree combo this year though

MauriceTheCat · 18/11/2014 16:12

Up to last year. .. most definitely fake. We were given a huge fake tree as an engagement present 14 yrs ago. We loved it Mr Maurice hated getting it down but I love how it looked and the Cats sprayed it...

Last year we realised not that easy to find time to get it down and as we were near a huge Christmas Tree Farm we could treat ourselves. Ok so we ended up with one too big for car and we were are squashed up but the girls loved it and the cats just ignored it... so we are hoing real again this year.

Helps its kept on the stone floor in the conservatory shedding is manageable

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 18/11/2014 16:19

Had a real one once - never again. The needles shed EVERYWHERE. Didn't help we lived in a flat then so had to get it down 2 flights of carpeted stairs...

We bought a new 8ft pre lit one this year. Not cheap - but looks amazingly real.

The kitten climbed the little fake one we had last year a couple of times, so might have to attach this big un to the wall with a bit of fishing line Grin

trufflesnout · 18/11/2014 16:20

We have a real tree each year. We buy a species that doesn't drop its needles and also has a lovely big bushy shape.

It's a tradition for us to go out with the kids one weekend to buy it and they get to pick which one we take home. The frantic shoving of an always too-big tree into our living room is one of my favourite parts of Christmas, and in January we chop it up and use it for firewood.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 18/11/2014 16:23

Our council come by in Jan and pick up trees if you leave them by the side of the road. They mulch them and use it on the city parks. (not in UK)

drbonnieblossman · 18/11/2014 16:35

real every time. Better for the environment too.

squoosh · 18/11/2014 16:54

Fake trees make Baby Jesus cry. And it's mean to make the birthday boy cry.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 18/11/2014 18:09

I thought your thread was about something else!. Not that I've got a dirty mind or anything. What ever gave you that idea.
I fake it, Christmas trees that is. The real ones make too much mess, again I am refering to Christmas trees.

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 18/11/2014 18:11

Real ones make my son sneeze for weeks. I prefer real but our fake is pretty lovely too and DH loves loves loves not messing with lights every year.

AugustRose · 19/11/2014 19:08

We love a real tree and have had one for the last 20 years since me and DH lived together but I am not evangelical about them. It's just become part of our christmas and it is DH's little tradition to go and get the tree with one of the children.

I never liked artificial trees but over the last few years I have noticed some really nice ones that don't cost a fortune so I might consider one at some point - we live on a farm so disposing of a real tree isn't a problem for us.
