To think that not getting your mail delivered until 3.45pm is a fucking joke?

When I arrived home from work an hour or so ago and saw that there were no letters on the mat I presumed we wouldn't getting any mail today, as it usually comes around 11am or here about. So imagine my stunned surprise when five minutes ago I glanced out of the window to see the unmistakable sight of a postman trudging up the path of the house opposite us, at 3.45pm!. And he hasn't even got to us yet!

It's been getting later and later for years but this really takes the biscuit. It's nearly tea time for Christ's sake. What the fuck is wrong with the Royal Mail these days?! I remember waking up to to the sound of post coming through the letter box, opening your mail whilst eating breakfast. If your waiting for something important to come in the mail you want it ASAP, you don't want to be hanging about till early evening waiting for it!

Nearly 4pm just isn't acceptable is it?

Home post arrives around 4pm, business post (in very central London) between 11am and 12 noon.

When I was a child (gimmer) it was before 7am every day.

But I have got used to it.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 13/11/2014 16:30

Ive had a few letters delivered at 6pm this week I see the postie today and that was around 3pm, we seem to get a different post man each day just now.

ScarletFever · 13/11/2014 16:36

i dont think that anyone is blaming the postie personally, however the service is shit - i think we miss days, post used to be in by 9am, but now.... could be any time at all

i sent a first class signed for that didn't arrive for 2 days....

googoodolly · 13/11/2014 16:49

Well, if something's important, then you need to send it special delivery, and it'll get there before 1pm. Otherwise, I really don't see why it matters that you get letters at 4pm instead of 9am. It's still the same day and if something is that important, you really shouldn't be relying on regular post for it to get there on time.

Figfog · 13/11/2014 16:56

Doesn't bother me at all- we often get our post at 3pm. My postman is lovely too.

If you needed to get something early on in the day then there are services for that.

I do completely disagree with Royal Mail being sold off, but I can't say I am that bothered about what time the post hits our mat!

Charitybag · 13/11/2014 16:57

Our Royal Mail post comes at all times of the day. Although on Fridays it has arrived at ten to six on several occasions.

fourwoodenchairs · 13/11/2014 17:05

I'd like to see how well you'd do in the job. It isn't just swanning up and down the road all day. They work very hard.

BackforGood · 13/11/2014 17:06

I cant get worked up about this either. Anything time sensitive is sent electronicallly.
Snail mail is for junk mail and birthday cards. Doesnt matter what time of day they arrive.

SoonToBeSix · 13/11/2014 17:19

Jools 18k a year for unskilled work isn't really anything to complain about.

grocklebox · 13/11/2014 17:21

Why does this matter? When are you actually waiting on something that would really make a difference from 11 til 3.45? I'm guessing pretty much never.

Who cares? YABU.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/11/2014 17:24

i couldn't care less what time it comes, anything urgent is done by email or phone nowadays.

DaisyFlowerChain · 13/11/2014 17:25

I couldn't care less what time it arrives, it costs 60p to send something hundreds of miles away and it arrive next day. What other courier would do that?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 13/11/2014 17:45

Mine was shite long before privatisation. Not to mention the bundle we got through the door 6 months late with a note saying 'sorry these were found in someone's car'

poshfrock · 13/11/2014 19:15

Last time I sent something "first class" it took 17 days to arrive. No explanation as to why.

I used to live in Canada and it took something like 5 days to post something (first class) to the next town! Royal Mail is amazing. Privatizing will undoubtably make it shitter and more expensive. I get that it isn't as good as it used to be but honestly, I have always been very, very impressed with their efficiency.

LadySybilLikesCake · 13/11/2014 19:26

It's not late, it's early for tomorrow.

BiggerYellowTaxi · 13/11/2014 19:28

Oh, I forgot it had already been sold off Confused

wobblyweebles · 13/11/2014 20:04

Ours arrives between 4-5pm. I honestly couldn't care less.

Bearbehind · 13/11/2014 20:08

Eh- what do you get that is so time critical that it matters?

Many people will be at work most of the day so don't get their post until night time anyway.

It's really not a big deal.

Catsarebastards · 13/11/2014 20:13

Really cant see the issue. 10am or 4.30pm it's not a huge time.

Bunnyjo · 13/11/2014 20:25

YABU; ours arrives between 3 and 5pm. If you, or your parents, want/need something to arrive earlier you should pay the extra for a special delivery service.

LeapingOverTheWall · 13/11/2014 20:37

Some of our clients pay by cheque, getting that in the post at 4.30 means it's an extra day till it clears. And when cash flow is tight, a day makes a big difference

Bearbehind · 13/11/2014 20:40

If you are waiting for business post can't you pay to have it delivered early or collect it yourself?

For ordinary residential post it's really not an issue.

Not everyone can be first, not everyone will be last.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 13/11/2014 20:43

Ours always comes at this time. It doesn't bother me at all. If I'm at work that day then either way it is there when I get home. If I'm not then I can't do anything with the mail as ds would probably try and eat it!
