AIBU to think blue LED Christmas lights are the work of the devil?

I hate, hate, hate them. They are far too intense and dominate the entire tree.

We spent an afternoon at the weekend trailing round garden centres looking for multi-coloured lights with NO blue. All in vain.

I hate them on houses as well and there is a house down the lane that has just blue lights everywhere, every year. I snarl every time we pass it.

Blue lights are just too pushy. I yearn for old-fashioned lanterns with old fashioned bulbs.

Hate the blue (and bright white) take over of Christmas lights. Most town centres seem to be using them now too for their Christmas decorations. I miss the days of lots of warms colours in people's windows and through the town centre high streets.

Blue lights are not Christmassy. I get in a huff about it every year.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/11/2014 09:12

Someone's just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for inventing the blue LED, it defeated scientists for year and is what has made bright white LEDs possible and therefore has huge energy saving potential globally. Got to love them just for that.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 11/11/2014 09:17

Blue Christmas lights remind me of the lights they put in supermarket or nightclub toilets to stop people shooting up.

MorrisZapp · 11/11/2014 09:17

I bought fabulous warm white LEDs from Next. Really pleased with them.

TheBiggestDinosaur · 11/11/2014 09:18

YANBU, I absolutely hate them too, they are harsh and uncosy and not at all Christmassy.

whataloadofoldshite · 11/11/2014 09:21

YANBU!
My DH says I'm like the Grinch because I hate those blue outside lights. Like others have said, they make my eyes and head go funny, plus, I just don't like how they look personally.
Each to their own though!

fluffyraggies · 11/11/2014 09:23

Warm white only on the tree for me. Loads of them Grin

I like the blue LED. But only outside.

we bought a big blue LED reindeer for out front at the weekend

Boomtownsurprise · 11/11/2014 09:25

Just a fashion. Like peacock colours and feathers on trees last two years. Dunno what's up with red green n gold really.

RedToothBrush · 11/11/2014 09:30

YABU!!! Snow and ice have a blue tinge. It complements the season. I love winteriness. Its much under rated. I am most definitely not a sun worshipper. So, long has my tree been white, blue and black themed. Much to the horror of some people who insist its unchristmassy coloured... and then see my tree and love it. I find the old red and green combo too garish and clashing. Nice on santa and elves but not on my tree thank you...

123Jump · 11/11/2014 09:35

We went to visit my best friend last year and she had the most offensive tree I have ever seen.
It was an irritating perfect triangle shape, just completely perfect-dont fake trees even try to look real?
And every centimetre was covered in hideous blue LED lights.
When we left DH said that it was the most hideous tree he had ever seen,
and he couldn't give a crap what trees look like in general.
Only for a love her and her taste is usually great am I still friends with her. Grin

123Jump · 11/11/2014 09:36

RedToothBrush your tree sounds lovely and subtle. That is the difference.
Some of the blue is garish, IMO.

fluffyraggies · 11/11/2014 09:47

Personally i can't bare any flashing lights indoors. It literally gives me nausea and a headache after about an hour.

Last year one of our outdoor strings of flashy lights hung a little lower than usual - visible through the living room windows from inside - and even that subtle flash from outside through the curtains at night set me off feeling queezy Envy Had to get DH to shift it.

I love to see all the houses lit up and flashing as you go by at night though :) Just cant take it inside the house for some reason.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/11/2014 09:50

I like lights slowly fading and changing, that's how we have ours on the tree (multi coloured). Definitely going to put the blue (non-flashing) icicles back up in the window this year. A village near us has a big tree covered in just blue lights, it looks amazing. I love blue.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 11/11/2014 09:52

Ew yanbu. My mate bought a massive outdoor set last year for her front garden and it looked like some relic from Las Vegas had been transported into her pretty Welsh village!

Bloody awful ghostly yet over bright light ruining the view!

She was so proud of them and I was all "Erm yes...they're very eye catching" Hmm

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 11/11/2014 09:53

I have a collection of vintage lights. Coloured of course with plastic flowers around them. Bloody magical.

trikken · 11/11/2014 09:56

Dh bought a pretty half price tree a few years ago and whilst I love the actual tree it has blue led lights, so I put them on once for the kids then put the other lights on instead. The blue is too intense.

fluffyraggies · 11/11/2014 09:59

My mum has a set of lights that are still going strong which used to be on the tree when i was a kid. 40 mutter mutter years ago! Grin

Every year she gets them out, plugs them in and is amazed they're still ok! They have little plastic flower surrounds too.

ProbablyMe · 11/11/2014 10:01

YANBU. I can't stand them - they look too cold and make my eyes go funny. My DP loves them however so we have them outside - but not inside where I have to look at them all the time!!!

Sallystyle · 11/11/2014 10:14

I had a tree last year with just blue lights and I think it looked lovely!

Cyclopsbee · 11/11/2014 10:56

The house opposite us had blue lights last year, I kept thinking it was the policeHmm
every time I drove up the road, I thought oh no what's happened! it's the police
I hope they don't work this year

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 11/11/2014 11:20

Yes! The colour and brightness is just like the police!

Wooo wooo! It's the fricking bad taste cops!

crownstreet · 11/11/2014 11:40

True OP, but all LEDs are wrong whatever the colour! Fairy lights are what you want, & Argos do em dead cheap.
