Basically the title says it all, I have enough in the bank to live off (frugally) for a few years. I would probably make myself less employable in the future but not so assed about that as want to be self employed.

Aibu to quit?

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 10/11/2014 18:07

Yes, quit. Let someone else have the job who will appreciate it.

madsadbad · 10/11/2014 18:08

Could you drop hours, or look for another part time position while building up you SE work?
Ultimately it you want to quit and can afford it, do it, but I would worry about the future so could not do it.

wilsonq2 · 10/11/2014 18:09

Lol I don't not appreciate it, the other person would probably appreciate it just as much purely for the money

raltheraffe · 10/11/2014 18:09

Perhaps you can take the knowledge you have from this job and use it to help you when you go s/e. I would advise you if you want to start a business capital outlay is always greater than what you expect and so I would use my savings for that.

wilsonq2 · 10/11/2014 18:11

That's the thing, I think ,4 years worth of savings is a lot, but a few months after quiting I would probably panic and look for a job. I told myself I would quit when I have 2 years, now I'm looking to save up 6 years all the while money is becoming worth less

OP posts:
raltheraffe · 10/11/2014 18:31

what do you want to do as s/e?

ilovesooty · 10/11/2014 19:34

If you can't motivate yourself in employment I'd reflect on your motivation and a business plan for self employment. Do you have the latter costed and in place?
And yes, I'm sure someone else who's desperate for work might appreciate your job if you hand in your notice.

wilsonq2 · 10/11/2014 20:48

Yes I'm kind of all ready to go with my self employment stuff.

Despite me finding office life dull, I am still very good at my job, but my heart isn't in it and it demotivates me knowing I don't really need the money

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 10/11/2014 21:26

if you are ready to go with the self employment, what is stopping you ?

wilsonq2 · 11/11/2014 06:51

Damaging my future PAYE prospects and the fear of no regular income

OP, assuming for the moment that you don't have DC (and possibly even if you do), what you do with your life is entirely up to you. You're in control: nobody can make you do what you don't want to do. If you're unhappy in your job and want to be self-employed, then why on earth not?

Cherrypi · 11/11/2014 07:57

Go for it. Be brave. Why not?

Bluetonic123 · 11/11/2014 08:47

If you can afford to support yourself why not? You only live once.

wilsonq2 · 11/11/2014 17:12

Thanks I know I should just go for it :)

Re Ni I think you still contribute if your se. But as I'm under 40 I don't ever imagine getting a state pension.

OP posts:
WafflerCumIroner · 11/11/2014 17:15

I have bias because I want to do this myself... still

YANBU! Go nuts! :)

ILovePud · 11/11/2014 17:16

Of course you're not being unreasonable, life's too short to stay doing something that's making you unhappy if you've got other options. Good luck OP (though you might have to get use to eating ASDA smart price chocolate Wink)

TheHobbit · 11/11/2014 17:17

Do you eat chocolate at work?

ILovePud · 11/11/2014 17:20

I'm just joking TheHobbit OP has started another thread today about being frustrated with her DH for buying 'inferior quality' chocolate.

wilsonq2 · 11/11/2014 17:27

Lol thanks, even if I was on a budget I'd rather have quality stuff now and again than a constant supply of blandness ;) lidl stuff is really good for the price, single origin

OP posts:
JugglingFromHereToThere · 11/11/2014 17:29

Go for it!
You obviously have good discernment on the chocolate front Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 11/11/2014 17:30

LIDL with whole hazelnuts is my chocolate of choice ATM Have you tried it? Amazing value too

SolidGoldBrass · 11/11/2014 17:31

Go for it and good luck. It is miserable to do a job that bores you, and if you can manage without the wage, walk away. One of the sad things about the current economic mess is the number of people trapped in shitty, dull jobs who simply can't afford to leave. There is, after all, more to life than working for a wage.

CinnabarRed · 11/11/2014 17:33

You say Damaging my future PAYE prospects and the fear of no regular income is what's stopping you going s/e - but wouldn't exactly the same apply to stopping working? Confused

CinnabarRed · 11/11/2014 17:34

Or, do you mean stopping working to go s/e? I read it as stopping working to travel/do something else.
