Kids reading book with child improsoned and threatened with being murdered and stuffe!

I am reading it out loud to DS1 (8). I am a bit as the little boy in the story has been kidnapped by a questionable gentlemen in a remote castle and now he's telling the boy he's going to kill him and stuff him. They are talking about his 'eternity pose' and does he want to choose what pose He will be in!!

It all seems a bit Silence of the Lbs to me.

I'm not a prude and after all Roald Dahl and Grimms fairy tales are full of it, but I might read the summary a bit more next time.

How is your DS feeling about it? That's the first important thing.

The next one is - how is it written? Gritty hyper-realistic descriptions of everything, or are these just events in the story without much detail?

It sounds like the kind of adventure story boys that age would like, IMO. But of course you know your own child best, and if you think he would be upset, you should just pick another book.

Is your DS enjoying it? What's the book? Tbh I think they're all pretty dark; Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Rapunzel - a whole load of attempted murders, infanticide, cannibalism, child abduction...

(And I should have added, kids love 'em)

Oh it's very funny and actually a good yarn. He loves it.

It just pictured to me as I was reading it that from a grown ups point of view as a subject it's scary. I suppose that's the root of most horror stories anyway - augmented fairy tales

It's called Jumble Cat.

Sounds like Great Expectations. Three of us read that book as a group at school, aged 10. After just a handful of pages it was clear to us all that it was a load of Dickensian bollocks. We asked the teacher if we could stop reading it ( it really was terrible crap). He wasn't happy about it but agreed provided we each wrote a summary of the ending. WTF ? He was a bloody woodwork teacher by 'trade' anyway. What did he know ?
