I'm a blubbering wreck in my kitchen now! Thanks Radio 2.

The Alexandra Burke version must be the worst ever, with the possible exception of my own accompaniment to LC or JB..

It was evident that Burke had never heard the song in its previous versions, or bothered to read the lyrics before she sang it at the X Factor final. There have been many reasons for me to shout at the telly during X Factor, but that was the only time I've thrown the RC at it.

enjoyingscience · 07/11/2014 14:22

'Into my arms' gets me every single time. Bloody Nick Cave.

After LC's version, Jeff Buckley is the only acceptable alternative. Even Rufus Wainwright, who I love usually, doesn't do it justice.

dementedma · 07/11/2014 14:27

Kd Lang version is brilliant.

diddl · 07/11/2014 14:53

Oh dear!

hearing that priest has completely ruined it for me nowSad

BugritAndTidyup · 07/11/2014 15:02

Blush I came on here all ready to tut at the pearlclutching, assuming you were complaining about the sexual references in the song. Now I feel silly.

LeBearPolar · 07/11/2014 15:05

I have never forgiven Simon Cowell, The X Factor or Alexandra Burke for what they did to that song.

Minesril · 07/11/2014 15:09

I love the John Cale version:

It's played during a particularly sad episode of scrubs which always makes me cry!

KatieKaye · 07/11/2014 15:10

Leonard every single time.
By no means are all of his songs depressing - but they are complex and bear repeated listening.
Been a fan of his for well over 30 years

Caboodle · 07/11/2014 19:29

Vital beautiful version by kdlang....thanks....made my day

maddening · 07/11/2014 19:41

Beth Orton "pass in time" makes me cry every time

ArkhamOffett · 07/11/2014 19:41

Oh Minesril, I thought I was the only one who had cried at that version.

hackmum · 07/11/2014 19:46

I like kd lang's version the best too, though the John Cale version is also very good.

hackmum · 07/11/2014 19:46

And completely agree about the dreadful Alexandra Burke version.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 07/11/2014 19:57

Thanks vital that was great.

on this subject, Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" renders me incapable. I find it too hard to listen to.achingly and tragically beautiful. Heartbreaking.

lomega · 07/11/2014 20:56

Aww we had this song played at our wedding! It's a goodun. Not sure it makes me cry though. (Hallelujah)

(YANBU by the way, I cried at the video of Justin Timberlake's 'Mirrors' the other day... :( haha)

SingSongSlummy · 07/11/2014 21:01

Ugh, I had the misfortune to hear Burke sing it up close in a private gig about 5 years ago. Twas bloody awful!

Anything that Katharine Jenkins sings is horrific, literally ANYONE is better than her.

mythbustinggov · 07/11/2014 21:08

Don't give up. Makes me well up every time. Especially with the vid...

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 08/11/2014 08:55

Enjoyingscience, Into my Arms was our first dance wedding song, I loves Mr Cave.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 08/11/2014 08:59

KatieKaye, Love, love, love, Leonard, So Long Marianne is my absolute favorite, just adore it.

marcopront · 08/11/2014 09:08

A former student used to sing it regularly. I love her version. No video of her singing hallelujah but this is her.

Welshwabbit · 08/11/2014 09:10

I heard Leonard Cohen do this live and actually cried there and then. He did the "I did my best/it wasn't much" verse, which isn't in the Jeff Buckley version, but makes me wail every time I hear it.

KatieKaye · 08/11/2014 09:23

Sounds like we are kindred souls, Hound - I love that too and my favourite is Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye from the same album!

Oh, and Dance Me to the End Of Love, which is much more recent.
